Nelson: Everyone Will get the Cornhusker Kickback

Will Medicaid Funding be the Straw that Broke Health Care's Back?

Senator Ben Nelson (D-DeadMeat) continues to try to distance himself from his Obamacare bribe and his vote for the bill:

“At the end of the day, whatever Nebraska gets will be available to all states,” Nelson said during a conference call with reporters.

In exchange for his crucial support of the reform bill, Nelson was promised federal funding to cover Nebraska’s entire cost of a Medicaid expansion included in the bill. Other states will have to begin picking up a portion of the added expanse beginning in 2017.

Nebraska wasn’t alone in getting Medicaid breaks. Vermont, Louisiana and Massachusetts also got help with their programs.

Nelson said Thursday that if he can’t secure a similar deal for every state, he wants states to be freed from paying the cost of Medicaid expansion. That would mean eliminating the provision or finding another way to pay for it.

“States that are concerned about Nebraska getting something that they’re not getting should rest at ease,” Nelson said. “That’s not going to happen…”

Nelson said Thursday that he expects all states will get extra Medicaid funding, but he wouldn’t speculate on whether he’d vote against the reform measure if Nebraska was still singled out.

Before we consider the specifics of Nelson’s demand suggestion, let’s recount for a second some of the people that have come out against the deal: Blanche Lincoln, Sherrod Brown, Michael Bennet, Joe Sestak, John Spratt, a number of state Attorneys General, and the Governator. And of course, Nelson’s own Governor – and possible 2012 opponent – opposes the extra money for Nebraska.

Faced with the growing anger over a deal that saves Nebraska taxpayers but imposes tens of billions of additional dollars on the backs of taxpayers of many other states, Nelson now says he’s committed to making sure that all states get the same deal Nebraska got. He won’t say however, that he’ll vote to kill the bill if he doesn’t get his way. That’s significant, because providing the same help to all the states is likely to add tens of billions to the cost of the bill.

This headache seems to be growing rather than waning. Will Democrats kill Nelson’s deal, find significant new revenue to buy in every state, or simply tell Nelson (and many others) to quit grousing and line up behind the bill?

…like Nelson has had the fear of God put into him by the backlash against his bribe and is looking for a way to squirm out of voting for the bill again.

Maybe that’s wishful thinking. But we sure are hearing a lot of second thoughts voiced by a lot of Democrats lately.

If there is a provision that EVERY state has its Medicaid paid for by the Feds it would jack the cost of the bill so much higher than the current “official” estimates that it could be a game-changer.

That is my reaction as welll, If the number is big enough the CBO needs to rescore it and it needs to be debated on C-SPAN.

the bill, it matters not a whit what Nelson does. The Bill itself can pass, 51-49 without his vote. If the Senate doesn’t have to vote again (via this ping pong procedure), the bill is as good as passed.

Is there some mechanism whereby the Senate must vote again but there will be no opportunity to filibuster?

      • Brian Faughnan

If anything in the bill changes, the Senate has to vote again. And by extension, they’ll have to get 60 votes again.

If the House passes the Senate bill as-is, then the Senate phase is over and done with.

It isn’t that everyone wants your sweetheart deal senator – it’s that nobody wants any of this. Offering more piles of crap on top of crap isn’t the answer. Are these people this delusional?

Here is an answer, anyone running for office should say to the voters, “You elect me and I will vote out all benefit packages for future and former senators and congressmen. That should end this all right now.”

  • denniswayne

Nelson is toast. Being savaged at home, if he caves now Reid will take his scalp. My bet is a lot of smarmy mea culpas and he bets that voters will have forgotten when he is next up for election.

  • http://www.suvstrategery.blogspot.com SoFiMil

Nelson stated he was completely unaware of this part of the Cornhusker Kickback. Maybe Reid knew eventually every state would rightfully demand to be included in this deal. If the Senate couldn’t lower the age for Medicare, this was the next best thing.

    • janis

What I DO buy is that he never thought that he’d get this much grief for doing what he did. Rather than just ‘fess up and say he did absolutely the wrong thing and he will not vote for it the second time under any circumstances, thereby canceling what he did the first time, he just goes even further down the rabbit hole.

People such as Ben Nelson seem to have come from some other genetic strain than the average American citizen who knows right from wrong, and smart from stupid.

For him to sell out the lives of unborn baby’s for an Enron like accounting trick is really disgusting. I am guessing he has an ambassadorship lined up for retirement. The people of Nebraska are not going to buy his lame excuse on why he caved on the abortion language…not even for a Corhusker Kickback. They will not only de-elect him, he will be a pariah in the state.

    • wbb1950

You give Barney Fiffe Reid too much credit. As far as Nelson is concerned he is looking for cover at the expense of taxpayers, I think Nebraskens will be even more offended by this strategy.

It’s like a dinner of 50 people with the check split equally no matter what you order. If you had control of what you were going to spend that night, you’d consider the cost of what you ordered. But, heck, the guy on my left and the gal on my right are ordering the most expensive item on the menu, so ME, TOO!

      It’s a terrible arrangement.

      • Common_Cents

Not only 50 people splitting the check w/ no accountability but they get paid to eat out lavishly, including pension, all while charging the dinner on the rest of the restaurant patrons’ credit cards.

What a deal! I have to rethink this govt jobs are dead end jobs thing.

I’m not a moderator, but in my book abbreviations should be included.

      • Third Street

If “WTF” doesn’t sum up the current state of our government then I don’t know what does. (On the other hand, “LOL” and “OMG” would also be accurate summations.)

        • RedBeard

…highly appropriate 4-letter words I would like to use when discussing our disgraceful current crop of elected officials, but I’ll resist the temptation.

I won’t even abbreviate them, since that would be too much like “texting” (not a verb, by the way) which I refuse to do on principle.

      • Thomas_Hauber

You should have stopped at that first phrase. Anything after that just compounded your mistake.

No one likes to be told what they can and cannot do by someone who has no authority.

        • JoeG

*PLENTY* of bannings here have come for using widely known acronyms involving swear words. It was a polite notice that a moderator won’t take kindly to it.

What Erick says elsewhere in what was intended to be a joke among friends should not set precedent here.

I don’t claim not to swear. But if curse words are prohibited on this private site, then I can abide by that.

Either delete my account or tell me who I need to talk to.

          • penguin2

They do ban you though, especially if you act like you act like you don’t like us. Besides you are comparing apples to oranges, and coming up with fruitcake.

          • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

            Love that last line.

          • discerningconservative

You don’t see the difference? If someone cuts you off in traffic tomorrow, and you scream the “F word” at them, you will not be violating Red State rules. If you type that same word in a comment and post it here, that would violate the posting rules. So simple even a caveman can understand it.

          • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

I’m officially banning you for stupidity. You’re stupid and we’re afraid we’ll catch the stupid from you.

And SoFiMil was correct about the rules.

          You lose, Hauber.

Is to veto his own wetdream.

If he vetos the bill he can gain some credibility with almost everyone.

He needs to realize that he has over reached and needs to come back from the brink.

    Heh, who am I kidding??

Obama will sign this piece of crap and lose credibility with almost everyone…….

I saw where SS was not doing so well….and ObamaCare on top of that and no more Chinese money – US insolvent before 2016 elections…..

When will the congressional; clunkers stop their lying … Right after BamBam does.

Notice how BamBam seems more like your petulant little children each passing day.

Yes. If this is how he is now, can you imagine how miserable he will be come November . . . I can’t wait.

So basically, none of us have to pay for the Medicare increased costs!

    Hooray!!!

The money will magically appear in the Treasury, I am sure.

Just like Dick Morris said (holy cow, now I’m agreeing with Dick Morris), Nelson is like every so-called moderate Democrat. Either Reid’s or Pelosi’s be-yotch. In his case, Reid’s.

  • renny

obviously his popularity in Montana is in the pits.

He has supposedly been calling some of the 13 AG’s who plan to sue if Obamanationcare passes (party) on the grounds of unequalized federalism, where the feds are doing something like rewarding Montana with $100 million in Medicaid payments but taking $50 mill.. from NJ and NY to do so.

They are obviously all twitted. Too bad not enough to get them to stop.

    • vanekl

Nelson is from Nebraska. Baucus and Tester are from Montana.

  • clement

His medicaid deal was bad, so in order to make it better he is going to make it 50x worse?

    I don’t get it.

    • bobojake
  • renny

If all states get $100 million for Medicaid (God knows where that money is coming from as the Chinese are saying no more lending), then everyone does it and no one is wrong or guilty..

Don’t we hear that all of the time? We hate Bush, but altho’ we are doing something no one likes, Bush did it. And then that makes it ok. When Clinton was experimenting with cigars on Monica, the best the feminists could come up with is “everybody does it.”

    Actually, they don’t.

Nelson would gain some traction if he would just say he made a mistake, his state doesn’t want the largesse, and he’s now rejecting Reid’s deal. And what is the Sen. going to do? Throw him out? They still need 60 votes.

  • vanekl

For all the bickering and spin that rises to the surface, you can bet there’s much more trouble bubbling. Why else would it be absolutely necessary to keep the doors closed? The trouble is not the “obstructionists,” it’s their own party!

  • sarge324

nelson is a democrate.he just using words.you dont believe for one second that he is going against harry reid.just say that the mob wants him for a job,he better not say no.back door gifts, behind close door meetings with the crooks in washington.the only thing that come out ,is a crime on the american people.stay mad and vote the mobsters out of office.

  • rickcaston

everyone getting so bogged down with the kickback that they forget the whole reason Nelson was against this travesty was because of federally funded abortion. The fact that the senate language would actually lead to just that AND the fact that Nelson caved should be enough to have his constituents all up in arms. Come on Nebraska, don’t let him off the hook on ABORTION!!! Typical leftist scam, ALWAYS watch what the other hand is doing with these clowns.

  • outspoken

he has already cast his vote. Even if the deal is dropped, he has already cast his vote. If anyone thinks for one minute that the dems will allow this to be up for Senate vote again, you are only fooling yourself. They will make all their deals behind closed doors and then say there are no changes to the bill so there won’t need to be another vote in either house or senate. Why else not allow CSPAN televise?

  • outspoken

dems are abandoning ship because they know they won’t get re-elected anyway. That is why Reid put in wording that prohibits future Congresses from making changes to the plan – he knows they are all on their way out. This has not stopped them from passing this or any other of their agenda so that future administrations will spend even more time and money to try to unravel what this incompetent and naive administration has done to Americans. Next, they will try to pass a massive amnesty – expecting all these new ‘citizens’ to be dems. If that is passed, all those may well decide to run again anyway – since they are ‘really needed’.

  • joenitwit

Article I Section 2 of the US Constitution says “…direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers…” which means no one gets special tax rates – taxation has to be equal (apportioned)!

I say we let this Nebraska exemption stay in so when it passes, it will be blatantly unconstitutional and we can get the courts to throw out the whole health care bill on this one technicality!
