New York Democrats: Trying KSM in NYC is Kind of Risky

Remember back when Charlie Schumer, Kirsten Gillibrand, and the rest of the New York Democrats thought that trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in New York City posed no significant security risk? Remember how they said we could easily guarantee the safety of New Yorkers whose memories of 9/11 remained fresh? Well, apparently they’re suddenly worried, because now they’re concerned enough about costs that they’re demanding the federal government pay billions for it:

As the City of New York prepares for the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM) and the four co-defendants involved in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, we write to urge your Administration to include a separate line item in the upcoming Fiscal Year 2011 budget request that would fully reimburse the City of New York for all security and other expenses related to providing a safe and secure trial. Without this critical federal support, it is estimated that this trial could force New York City to pay hundreds of millions in police protection and security overtime costs that it cannot now afford.

KSM’s federal trial will take place just blocks away from the site of the World Trade Center attacks. Many of us lost family members, friends or neighbors on that tragic day, and the trauma of 9-11 is still very real for countless New Yorkers. Our nation should not add to the emotional burden from that horrible day by failing to provide the necessary federal funds to keep New York safe during this trial…

The trial of KSM will require an unprecedented amount of security, both to protect the judicial proceedings at the Courthouse and the surrounding area. Without full federal reimbursement, the costs of providing security for this trial will significantly compromise the NYPD’s efforts to prevent crime and terrorism, and further burden the budgets of New York City and New York State, both of which are already reeling from the severe economic downturn.

New York’s budget situation has not changed much in the last 6 weeks; if the city ‘could not afford’ the security for a trial, it was foreseeable at that time. Why didn’t these 19 Democrats make this a condition for their support – or even raise it as an issue – before they eagerly endorsed this risky scheme? Similarly, I can’t recall any of these 19 warning that New York city residents would be at greater risk of ordinary street crimes because of resources devoted to the terror trials.

Furthermore, why are these 19 Democrats suddenly sensitive to the ‘emotional burden’ imposed on those who were impacted by the 9/11 attacks? Surely it would have been more appropriate to raise such concerns before President Obama decided to bring terrorists to New York City. Instead, New York City’s Democrats discounted and downplayed the opposition of the people of New York. Back then, they told us New York ought to be proud to host the terror trials; now suddenly it’s ‘traumatic.’ Why don’t these Democrats simply tell the voters of New York that this is the burden they bear for the great honor of hosting Al Qaeda?

Do you know what would have cost no additional money and imposed no ‘emotional burden’ on New York? Trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed at Guantanamo Bay – which was specifically designed to house people like him and to allow adjudication of any charges. Instead, we will now pay the cost of closing Guantanamo, pay the cost of acquiring a new prison in Illinois, pay the cost of trying KSM in New York, and bear the risk of any attacks associated with the trial. It might have helped if Congressman McMahon – the leader of the letter – and his friends had spoken up before the administration made its decision.

I would be remiss if I did not let the voters of New York know the names of all 19 Democrats who demand a 30 pieces of silver for having stood silent while the President decided to try KSM in their midst. I’ll italicize the names of those whose cowardice is most likely to prove politically costly:

Michael E. McMahon
Yvette D. Clarke
Anthony D. Weiner
Joseph Crowley
Gary L. Ackerman
John J. Hall
Jerrold Nadler
Carolyn B. Maloney
Scott Murphy
Edolphus Towns
Steve Israel
Timothy H. Bishop
Carolyn McCarthy
Eliot L. Engel
Maurice D. Hinchey
Eric J. J. Massa
José E. Serrano
Michael Arcuri
Paul Tonko

By the way, residents of Staten Island may wish to take particular note of Mike McMahon’s decision to stay quiet until the die was cast, then speak up. McMahon is being challenged by Michael Allegretti and Mike Grimm. If you think McMahon should have expressed his security concerns when it might have made a difference, give some money to either or both.

That was back when they thought that Obama’s sweet talking, apologizing and bash America tour was going well.

Then reality in the fruit of the kaboom underwear bomber crashed into their tiny little insulated cocoon.

  • renny

they now care that everyone from Mike Bloomberg to Dave Paterson is hitting both Schumer and Gillibrand and the NY Cong. delegation for promoting the Obamanationcare death deal that will add billions to NY State’s Medicaid while agreeing to the deals given Landrieu and Nelson.

The underwear bomber is just a tweak in their psyches that holding civilian court trials of military criminals in downtown NYC is stupid on its face. They’ve also heard the nation screaming about the Detroit airplane assassin?s lawyering up and clamming up. Also, a fed. judge just ruled elsewhere that detainees’ confessions can’t be used because they weren’t voluntary–that will throw out 99% of the evidence that Holder and Obamanation boasted would provide automatic convictions in NY.

They thought they had a win-win==terrorize NY into Dem. submission and expose Bush-Cheney and their keeping us safe for 8 years as criminal uses of torture and unusual punishment just in time for the Big O to run in 2012. And voices are being heard about challenging Gillibrand in primaries. How soon the worm turns.

Gov. Paterson knew from the get go that this was coming to New York. He could have opposed it right then. Instead he lied and said he was not informed. There should be no federal reimbursement. Why are these creeps begging now? They have no shame. Schumer and Gillibrand are a disgrace. They screw New York at every available opportunity.

Hey New York – Wake Up.

as long the taxpayers in the the rest of country pump more dollars there to cover the cost and compensate for the risk.

It’s like everything else for Democrats – a “good solution” to a problem means it results in more taking and spending of taxpayer dollars than was in place before.

  • Achance

This is just about the rest of the Nation having to “stimulate” Noo Yawk. Never waste a crisis.

    • proudgop

I live in NYC ( west village) and I can see everyday where those Twin Towers should be standing

This trial is outrageous for not only the risks it puts us in but also the inconvenience ( they are closing all streets and subway routes near court room)

    …if he had any brains;
    “It’s a ‘Risky Judicial Scheme!’”

“Algore would say… … if he had any brains”

Algore and brains? How can they fit in one sentence?

  • WarEagle01

Of federal money should go to NYC for this trial. Pretty much everyone in that city voted for Obama and this is the price they should pay. Elections have consequences.

    • proudgop

You can’t allow us New Yorkers to be possibly killed just cause Obama is so wrong

      • 125graham

proudgop, Obama, Holder and the entire crowd do not care about the citizens of NYC nor anyone else, they are only interested in putting Bush on Trial to appease the far-left radicals. I SUGGEST NY CITIZENS TAKE TO THE STREETS IN PROTEST AND NEVER, NEVER LET ANY POLITITION SPEAK AT ANY PROTEST RALLY . It worked for ACORN when they were instructed to intimidate the banks to force unqualified loans and when they commited voter fraud (Obama’s main machine) and SEIU (Obama’s largest contributor) when they helped write the stimulas, healthcare bills and gets Andy Strein in the Whitehouse anytime he wants. (as a matter of fact he has a meeting with Obama today to change the senate bill to exempt his union)

        • Brian Hibbert

Acorn, et al, don’t care about the rule of law. They don’t mind stealing buildings from the rightful owners. They don’t mind committing voter fraud. They don’t mind doing ANYTHING to further their agenda.

We, on the other hand, believe in law and order. When we protest, we don’t break windows or block traffic or even litter (go to any tea party and you’ll see it’s true).

So go ahead an protest, but it won’t have the same effect on the current administration that Acorn had on their appeasers.

          • 125graham

Yes we do believe in the rule of law but the administration and their affiliates do not. They are trying war criminals in civilian court and giving them the same rights as an american citizen, when did that become law? THEY ARE SHREDDING THE CONSTITUTION EVERYDAY.
Will we accept the socialism that is coming? They changed the bankruptize laws to accomodate the unions and take-over car companies. They are changing the law to mandate that we buy the kind of healthcare they dictate or be fined or imprisoned. What happened to the rule of law?
WHO WILL STOP THEM OR MAKE THEM ADHERE TO THE RULE OF LAW WHEN THEY CONTROL THE JUDGES AND JUDICIAL SYSTEM?

      Are you a copperhead?

      • rec0n

He said ‘not one red cent’ should be jacked off the taxpayer for yet another thinly-veiled skim by Dems. And he’s correct, imo.As the author states, trying them in Gitmo would be @$*%! FREE.It’s where they should be tried.

Everything about this is wrong, and it’s infuriating.

        • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

You may not like the Democrats, but we’re at war.

Whether the trials should be held at all, and whether we should be holding them in New York City, are irrelevant to the question that faces us: Do we defend the homeland or not?

If you can find pork in the bill, point it out. But any blanket call for us to capitulate to the enemy at a national level is not acceptable.

          • spinoneone

Well, gee, Neil, I’m glad to see a Democrat admit to that. I thought the war belonged to Bush/Cheney and was not the property/responsibility of the Dems. Oh, maybe now in Afghanistan/Pakistan where Obama has already killed more Afghans and American soldiers than Bush did.

You probably consider yourself a member of the New York/Democratic “elite.” If so, I can suppose your “nation” view includes the 5 boroughs. Then, maybe, the ‘Left’ Coast and then you see the “fly-over” country in between which really doesn’t count. But, now you want “fly-over” country to pay for your problems? Go pound sand.

          • http://www.hakubi.us/ Neil Stevens

            Well done.

          • proudgop

Once again as a New Yorker you can’t allow possibly some innocent kids to be killed if we don’t defend the city even more because Obama chose to have this publicity stunt trial in NYC

I should not be left to be at more possible risk nor should any New Yorker no matte what their political ideology at the end of the day if you attack one of us you attack all of us.

Whew! That was the laugh of the month!

Bubba, you don’t have a clue what you’re talking about. Step back from the edge now.

he is definitely off our Christmas list

  • walter_hanson

This trial is being held to please the Move On.Org crowd. Since it’s their trial let them pay. They will have less money to pay for lawmakers who want to pass silly laws and maybe if they were force to pay they might realize how bad their policies are.

Besides George Soros, GE, John Kerry, and the other insane liberals can contribute and claim a tax deduction.

back in Gitmo but he is too bull headed ideologically to do that so he will inconvenience and fleece everyone so his stupid idea prevails. This man has an anvil for a brain.

  • sarge324

new yorkers vote them out all of them who thought it was a good idea to put you and your tax money in harms way.dont fear the government make the government fear you.vote for the country not the party.

  • GenEarly

The overwhelming majority of NYC votes socialist-appeaser , so what’s the problem here? On 9/11 I felt attacked when NYC was attacked , but NO MORE! The ship of state is sinking and it’s every man (state) for himself. You vote for impotent eunuchs and then wail and gnash your teeth at their incompetence? Vote them OUT or vote with your feet. Don’t ask me to save your _ _ _.

    • CincoSolas_del_Bronx
    • proudgop

      Yes NYC votes wrong

Yet, you can’t say go die because of even a majority’s stupidity

      • CincoSolas_del_Bronx

which included Caiaphas’ unintended prophecy in John 11:50 “You know nothing at all. Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” (ESV)

Replace the word “man” with “city” and you will see what some are not-so-secretly itching for right now.
