Blue Dog Boren: America Benefits When Democrats Lose

Boren Also Thinks Democrats May Lose their Majority

Dan Boren is not making any friends within the House Democrat caucus:

U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, Oklahoma’s only Democrat in Congress, predicts his party will lose seats in elections later this year.

While such a statement falls in the category of conventional wisdom that historically has the party in power losing congressional seats in mid-term elections, Boren parts company with others within his own party by suggesting such a setback would be a “good thing for Oklahoma and for me.”

“If we have a tight majority one way or another, that puts me in the driver’s seat,” the three-term lawmaker said.

“In the 112th (Congress), I probably will have the most influence I have ever had, no matter who has the majority.”

Describing a Republican takeover of the House as a “tall order” for the GOP, Boren said his party, even if it retains the majority in a new Congress that convenes in 2011, will be forced back toward the center politically.

He pointed to new figures on job losses and described his party’s legislative agenda last year as one of missed opportunities on the economic front.

“I think the House Democratic leadership along with the administration made a very large mistake by focusing on a lot of different pieces of legislation that would not do a lot to help the economy,” Boren said.

Give Boren credit for recognizing the hypocrisy of the Congressional Democrat leadership, and for the destructive nature of their agenda. But how can someone who expresses such hostility to that leadership also line up with them on a day-to-day basis? The House agenda is set by Speaker Pelosi. Steny Hoyer schedules the votes. Jim Clyburn whips support for passing these destructive bills. Boren voted for all 3 of them. In doing so, he bears a share of the responsibility for this agenda – even as he claims to be voting consistently against the worst of it.

Furthermore, Boren has not promised to oppose Pelosi, Hoyer, and Clyburn going forward. Indeed, he says he will never switch parties – suggesting he will continue to help enact an agenda he claims to oppose. And as the article notes, the Washington Post reports that Boren votes with Pelosi 87% of the time, (which Boren apparently regards as misleading).

It’s hard to avoid the conclusion that Boren is really concerned with nothing more than getting re-elected. He backs the Pelosi agenda in DC, and tries to convince his constituents that he opposes her. He promises that regardless of the final outcome of the midterms, he will be empowered to help push enactment of moderate policies. Boren’s rhetoric to the contrary, he’s no friend to conservatives. Here’s hoping he faces a strong challenger who’ll call him on his duplicity.

Anyone that is clearly comfortable voting with the House leadership 87% of the time would make a dubiously effective Republican.

Better to let him join the debris that gets flushed out of the Death Star just before it explodes.

He’s a classic phony, worse than the Lindsey Graham wing of the Republican Party, so my one word for him is not switch, it’s RETIRE.

?I think the House Democratic leadership along with the administration made a very large mistake by focusing on a lot of different pieces of legislation that would not do a lot to help the economy,? Boren said.

What else could he be talking about?

This is Coburn’s old seat, we need to see more from our Okies there! I think Boren’s alright, but like you pointed out, he’s still part of the problem.

…the citizens of Oklahoma are buying what this guy is selling: Voting with the party while in DC and trashing the party when at home in his district.

Perhaps I’m wrong but voting lockstep with the party nearly nine out of ten times seems to be a stretch for a “Blue Dog” Democrat. Perhaps Boren likes the idea of being a Blue Dog but bristles at having to perform the actions that actually puts one in that camp.

whew it feels good to say that.

My friends, these “blue dogs” are not moderate Democrats, nor are they consevative Democrats. They are Democrats, nothing more and nothing less.

Each one of them should be sent home in 2010. Don’t trust anything they say; just look at what they do.

    • RedBeard

If the past year has taught us anything at all, it is that the Blue Dogs are phonies who talk a fiscally conservative game, but then vote with the leftist Dems.

Perhaps a more direct, honest and accurate appraisal is that they are nothing better than LIARS.

Sounds like a guy trying to hedge his bets and not lose in November. Based on his voting record, he would make a decent moderate Republican at best, which is to say he would be a conservative Democrat. I want someone with solid conservative principles, as do most Oklahomans. They will see through this, and he will be gone in November, The people are waking up to this mess we elected.

If he votes with the left wing leadership 87% then he is not a blue dog. and then tellls his constituents that that same leadership had made serious mistakes in terms of its priorities then what does that make him? He must think his voters are stupid or something. They may have elected him, but I would be surprised if they retain him when he is this transparent–regardless of who his father is.

Boren is like the best friend you had in school (what I call a frenemy) the minute you turned your back, she was talkin’ ’bout U! The ONLY thing good about Boren is he is on the board for the NRA, go figure that! Yea, we need another Coburn, but that mold was broken. Don’t let boren fool, that nut doesn’t fall far from the tree. OU!
