NRCC Recruit Changes Mind, Will Challenge Shuler

This is How a Wave Grows

A virtuous circle is ‘a complex of events that reinforces itself through a feedback loop.’ One timely example is the current climate for Republicans in the midterm elections: good political news encourages stronger candidates to emerge, which dispirits Democrats and encourages desperation, which prompts better candidates to emerge, which dispirits Democrats…

Case in point, Heath Shuler’s re-election bid in North Carolina’s 11th district. Local leaders and the NRCC had heavily recruited Jeff Miller last year; he declined. But for whatever reason, he has now changed his mind, and seems likely to be a very tough candidate:

Although he said in October that he would not seek the Republican nomination, the Honor Air founder and Hendersonville businessman confirmed Thursday that he plans to run, but said it was too early in the process to make a bigger announcement…

“My wife, son, very close friends and veterans asked me to reconsider,” Miller said. “My family and I circled up, and we are close to making an announcement.”

Miller said he was exhausted last fall. He organizes Honor Air flights, which take World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the World War II Memorial. Last year was the largest Honor Air season, he said, and he was not prepared to think seriously about a run for Congress.

Miller said he had numerous people contact him last fall to voice their support. He believes he’s the right candidate, saying he’s not a professional politician, and he has been a successful businessman.

To be clear, there are already several GOP candidates in the race. They include Former Hendersonville Mayor Greg Newman, businessman Kenny West, ophthalmologist Dr. Dan Eichenbaum and attorney Ed Krause. But Miller may pose the toughest challenge for Shuler. The district was previously considered ‘Likely Democratic,’ despite its 6-point Republican lean. We’ll see if Miller (or another candidate) can move that needle.

I think that Scott Brown and the closeness of the race has MANY Conservatives looking to challenge ALL Democrats. I am so excited about this coming election season. I don’t have any FEAR or DREAD which is what I had in 06 (stomach ulcers as well..heh) and 08. I hope the National Parties get it into their THICK skulls that WE can run EVERYWHERE!

I am just on the edge of my seat literally waiting for Tuesday. I just cannot believe that a Republican is so close to WINNING….it is beyond my wildest dreams about 2010 but very much in keeping with the spirit I found at the TEA Party events I attended all of 2009….LET’S ROLL :)

The Asheville Tea Party is in the process of setting up a Political Action Committee, the Asheville Tea PAC. The purpose of forming ATPAC is to promote those candidates for political office who will advance the core values of the Asheville Tea Party, specifically expansion of individual liberty and Constitutionally limited government. From the main page:

    First Order Of Business

    NC 11th US House Seat

How will we choose our candidate?

Each of the candidates for the US House seat currently held by Rep. Heath Shuler will be given a questionnaire to complete. His or her completed questionnaire will then be available here at our website.

By vote of the Board of Directors, ATPAC will choose the candidate who we believe best represents our core values and is most able to promote and protect individual liberty and Constitutionally limited government.

NC11 and am going for a soak at Hot Springs, NC tonight.

There are quite a few Obama voters in that area and in the Asheville area, in general.

When things sort themselves out, I’ll be sure to send a few bucks to the most conservative candidate.

Here in TN1 the GOP has a lock on the seat, so not a whole lot to do.

“… going for a soak at Hot Springs, NC tonight.” I’m jealous.

You know anything about the “Road to Nowhere” up in Swain Co., NC? Shuler got an earmark for Swain Co. to finish the road, but it’s unclear who requested the earmark or what he got in return.

Yes, we lovingly call Asheville “Haight-Ashbury East”.

You see those bumper stickers down in the piedmont where I live, and once you visit there you understand. But it’s not as loopy as Northern California, so there’s still hope.

that not all that good. I guess Ashville wants to be like the People’s Republic of Austin or more the Montrose section of Houston. If so, that place is of those stay away places.

A one-time payoff to Swain Co. rather than finishing the road. The Swain Co. folks say connecting the road to some of the more historic areas of the county would siphon some tourist interest away from eastern TN. Shuler’s TN real estate interests would not be happy.

The handful of candidates here in NC11 are all good folks. The question is, can any of them mount a winning campaign against Shuler’s and MoveOn’s money. They outspent the GOP candidate about five-to-one in ’08.

Fortunately, the liberal Mecca of Asheville is an exception in the District. Lots of Yellow-dog/Blue-dog Democrats, though. The GOP primary winner will need much support.
