No Manhattan Terror Trials?

What Can Brown Do for New York City

SIGN THE PETITION TO OPPOSE TERROR TRIALS. GO HERE.

According to Scott Brown’s pollster Neil Newhouse, one of the big reasons for Brown’s win was the concern among Massachusetts voters about Obama’s terror policies. It seems numerous Democrats have begun at least to consider, that voters may be distrustful of their poster on national security. How serious is the shift? Michael Isikoff says Congress may be ready to pull the plug on Manhattan terror trials:

Top administration officials are getting nervous that they may not be able to proceed with one of their most controversial national-security moves: trying Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other accused 9/11 conspirators in federal court in New York City. Last November Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. portrayed the trial as a way to showcase the American justice system to the world—and to accelerate President Obama’s stalled plans to shut down the U.S. prison at Guantánamo Bay. But because of shifting political winds in Congress, the trial is now “potentially in jeopardy,” a senior official, who did not want to be named talking about a sensitive situation, tells NEWSWEEK.

The chief concern: that Republicans will renew attempts to strip funding for the trial and, in the aftermath of the bombing attempt aboard Northwest Flight 253, pick up enough support from moderate Democrats to prevail. Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham says he will force another vote on his amendment to stop the trial (which was defeated 54-45 in November) once Congress reconvenes. “With Detroit and everything else going on, we’ve got a pretty good chance of winning this thing,” says Graham, adding that he’s privately heard from a number of Democrats, saying “they’re with me.” GOP Rep. Frank Wolf says he plans a similar move in the House. “I’m afraid it’s probably going to pass,” says Democratic Rep. Jim Moran, who has strongly backed the administration on the issue.

If the Brown win convinces Democrats in Congress not to put New Yorkers at greater risk than they already are, it will have done the nation – and the Obama administration – a service. If Obama is able to go through with his plan, it’s simply one more political burden to hang around the necks of all Congressional Democrats – especially those in the tri-state area.

And if Democrats needed more of an excuse to reconsider, they can point to the recent vote of the lower Manhattan community board that would be home to the trials:

A lower Manhattan community board, whose members are outraged over the plan to hold a 9/11 terror trial in their neighborhood, called on federal officials yesterday to move it to Governors Island.

The executive committee of Community Board 1 passed a resolution demanding the shift after hearing from more than 20 downtown residents who loathe the idea of terror threats and massive security lockdowns. The full board will have to approve it.

“We’re right next door to [the federal courthouse at] 500 Pearl St. Now we’re going to be 20 yards away from the new Ground Zero,” said area resident Walter Coddington…

“It’s self-evident this trial should not be here,” said Mark Ameruso, the board member who first proposed the idea.

“I just hope common sense and compassion for our neighbors trumps ideology.”

So far, ideology has been trumping common sense and compassion. But now that the voters of Massachusetts have rejected their ideology, maybe Congressional Democrats will give common sense a try. I won’t hold my breath.

Update: There’s much more on last night’s Community Board meeting here, in a firsthand report by RS’s own Mark Impomeni. Check it out.

Now since the Dems seem to be running for the hills why don’t we revisit the whole black panther intimidation business from the 08 election? I think we could get Holder to change his mind on that one, don’t you?

Obstruction of justice, in dropping the case against the New Black Panthers.

Since that ain’t happening, I’ll settle for his sorry butt being made to look stupid, and being revealed as an American-hating, racist scumbag who is in over his head.

Oh yeah. It’s never out of line to remind that he brokered the Marc Rich pardon.

On the thugs in the WH. They routinely use money as the bait for power. And when the other party chooses to disagree, they threaten the loss of funds to extort their position. Starve the beast. Take the money away to neuter the power.

I can sadly tell you right now the typical liberal leaning voters of the city simply just don’t care. I have heard hardly anything in cities papers or television about it. We already saw this with ACLU crying about checking peoples bag to enter the subways. Now they do every other 3 people and everyone who lives in city knows it.

The only time New Yorkers will get mad is when they close city streets and subways stop for the trial.

The more I think of it, if I were living in NYC
and the did hold the trials there, I would fully
expect more terror attacks directly to that city,
I see no logic that would deny that the terrorists
would not direct their hate directly to the city
    wherein the trials are held.,

Moreover, to put the rest of these clowns into Illinois
only 20 miles from a nuclear reactor is the height of
folly. This would be another very symbolic attack to
    expect.

And, now that we see homegrown terrorists going
to Yemen for more training, (one news article said
they were radicalized in prison) why should be put
these guys where they can recruit even more dissatisfied
and alienated criminals to their cause?
    — What ever happened to logic and reason.

Keep GITMO open, waterboard the ones necessary
and hold MILITARY tribunals for all terrorists, or
at least those who are foreign nationals, Those who
are US nationals should be tried for TREASON in
whatever court system is historically and legally
    appropriate for that crime.,

We were promised “hope and change”
but we got “HYPE and CHAINS”
or as I’ve seen elsewhere: “HOAX and CHAINS.”

God Bless Scott Brown, let’s bring the rest
of New England to their senses,

When I type I get unintended double negatives.
    I meant to say:

I see no logic that would show that the terrorists
would not direct their hate directly to the city
    wherein the trials are held.,

Obama and his “progressives” thought they would put President Bush on trial with this TRIPE and they have found out that Americans NEVER play games with National Security EVER! These idiots will learn and the biggest lesson will be in November! The commercials just write themselves.

Is there anyone out there, except for the anti-war left and the Obama admiration society that believes the real purpose of moving these trials to NYC is anything more than the opportunity to put Bush-Cheney on trial?

They know full well that trying thse terrorists in the public arena will open up discussion of the practices of the Bush-Cheney Admin efforts to fight terrorism and keep this nation free from further attacks.

    to keep themselves relevant.

Obama raised Susan Rice’s UN Ambassadorship to Cabinet-Rank, which “creates the potential for bureaucratic conflict, especially with the State Departmen,” according to John Bolton, Bush’s UN Ambassador who kept the US out of the ICC.

“Bolton also questioned whether the U.N. ? whose culture he says is “‘mpervious to change’ ? should be so central to U.S. foreign policy.”

    from: http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/2008-12-01-rice_N.htm

Obama was not kidding about working to restore the “credibility” of the US on the world stage .. and by this, I mean weakening the US and bringing her to her knees to genuflect in front of the world’s socialist nations.

What’s happening in Congress gives me hope, especially if they hold the purse strings. But you have to think of the cash reserves and slush funds this damn camp has hidden away.

Chicagoans know how to finagle and manipulate, work behind the scenes.

If Obama starts to smell impending doom regarding his re-election (Mort Zuckerman’s piece is a huge indicator http://www.usatoday.com/news/politics/2008-12-01-rice_N.htm ), I’m afraid Obama is going to seriously screw the nation and chuck the Constitution completely out the window to pave his way to “bigger and better things.”

#2 Homeland Security, #3 Appropriations. He was just asked this by Howie Carr on WRKO radio in Boston, said these would be his top 3 choices. Brown had just gotten off the plane from DC, called the show as he has known Howie Carr for 10 or 15 years (Brown said during the conversation). Brown is a fan of talk radio and has called Carr’s show many times in the past few years.

As Scott Brown said: we should spend taxpayer money buying weapons to defend ourselves against terrorists, rather than lawyers to defend them.

The Obama adminstration reveals its true face with every action it takes.

    • PaulT

This was the biggest applause line of Scott Brown’s acceptance speech, yet it has been virtually ignored by the media, especially Fox News. All they could focus on was his potential effect on health care.

I think the handling of this nation’s security by the Obama Admin may be the key to republican restoration in the ’10 elections, but will the party make an issue of it.

  • voxoreason

While some call Obama inept or incompetent, I believe he has an agenda, which he has pursued VERY competently…to the extent that Americans are picking up on this agenda.

Iran is a perfect example. I wonder how much progress Iran has to make before Obama decides that talking hasn’t worked for years, while Iran is given all the time in the world to develop nuclear weapons.

While the terrorists are tried in NYC, our guys who got the guy behind the Faluja dragging, burning, hanging from a bridge treatment of Americans, seem to be preparing for a trial in Iraq under a military tribunal. Interesting perspective. Disgusting, but interesting that an American president can be so blatantly a clear and present danger to our nation.

With our troops (including my son, who made it through a tour of Iraq) on the line in Afghanistan, Obama dithered. He seems more inclined to accommodate our enemies than to protect our nation and our sons and daughters, who serve our country more in a day than Obama does in a year.

Hard to imagine Obama teaching the Constitution. If he’s read it at all, seems like he was looking for ways to get around it. He seems pretty talented at that, too.

Obama may be giving time to the Iranians, but the Israelis will run out of patience very soon. When, not if they attack the Iranian nuclear installations, the entire dynamic will change.Obama will be pulled along by events he can?t control.

  • olddog

tried in a military tribunal, will get more justice, than they gave any of their victims.
It has been okay by our Supreme Court, and the Geneva Convention to try them in a tribunal. The trials as proposed are for political maneuvering, and to stick their finger in the eye of the people, saying we can do whatever we want to do, and as a distraction for all the behind the scenes, destruction of the country as we know it.
Divide and conquer, is a tried and true tactic, by despots down through history. Don’t Americans, get, how much we have been weakened, by this administration?
    Support our Troops, constantly.
