Report: DSCC Trying to Get Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) to Retire

This is nothing more than scuttlebut, so take it for what it’s worth. But given her horrible poll numbers, it’s probably quite reasonable to conclude that anyone would have a better shot at winning this Senate seat than Blanche Lincoln:

A well-known Washington insider has been telling Arkies this weekend that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is trying to talk Sen. Blanche Lincoln out of running for re-election.

That would open the door for a Wes Clark candidacy. And U.S. Rep. Mike Ross would be in the race in a heartbeat. Then comes a deluge of candidates in the 4th District. Forget for a moment what a Boozman candidacy does for the House of Dominoes on the Republican side from Senate down.

If true, I have to wonder if the Democratic apparatus would apply the same pressure to a male candidate with the same, actually worse, voting record? Say a Mark Pryor. Just wondering. Whatever else may be true or false, campaign speculation is at hysteria level.

My thought: With $5 million or so in campaign cash, chairmanship of the Senate Ag commitee, two terms in office and an as yet unknown and potentially wack-o opponent, Lincoln seems a long-shot for quitting.

It’s probably right that Lincoln is unlikely to step aside – for precisely the reasons outlined here. But is the DSCC attempting to cut its losses – as they might have done in Connecticut, and might yet do in Nevada?

it certainly did not detract from the substance.

she can use the out she wants to spend more time with her kids

How popular is Clark in Arkansas now? I think the move might help dems a bit?

And ran his Presidential campaign WAY to the left of Arkansas.

        He’d get destroyed.

I guess maybe the Gov. could hold it for them.

But I don’t see any other AR Dem pol holding this seat for them in this environment.

  • jasonmvass

I don’t think Bill Clinton could hold that seat this cycle. An incumbent is their only chance.

Make the troubled incumbent throw in the towel, then pretend the replacement got beamed in from a Starship and has no knowledge at all of what went on before.

This ain’t the year to voluntarily give up your relatively safe House seat, and as a Democrat in a purple state take a shot at an open Senate seat. Many other years, sure. In 2010, in a statewide election in AR, you don’t want to be the Democrat.

As far as that goes, sure, I hope he does. That way he’s out of Washington altogether.

  • zbigreddogz

We’d be able to pick up ALL THREE Arkansas D house seats.

And he’d lose the Senate race to Boozman anyway.

    • jfindl2

Yeah, thats immediately what I thought when I read the article. I really hope he jumps into the fray.

I see the strategery but it won’t work. Go ahead and retire all you Dems in trouble. Dems with no track record like Obummer may have been elected in 08 but people are wise to that now. Putting in a Dem candidate with no “history” against the Republicans won’t work again. It’s like that Who song “Won’t Be Fooled Again”. Nice try Dems but forewarned is forearmed. The thinking is clear that they are putting in “anyone but the incumbent” in the hopes that the unknown nature of the Dem candidate will fool enough people in purple states to keep a Dem butt in the seat. No sale. Whether they pull out the old guard or not I predict more R’s in the seats. After all we were able to turn the bluest of blue seats Brown last Tuesday and we will do it again.

and then no one decides to run in her place!

  • roxer

Plan on them retiring vulnerable Dems and picking candidates they know can win. They did that with the Blue Dogs. Never think the Dems aren’t working in the background to upset the apple cart. The Chicago way is here for a while.

It looks like Bayh’s Liberalism is catching up to him. He still has a huge war chest and better name recognition, and Pence might want to hold on to his house leadership position, but this is good news all the same.

Hostettler even holds him to within 3 points, 44-41.
