Schumer: Move the KSM Trial From NY? Sure, That Would be Fine.

Speaker (to be) Boehner predicted the other day that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed will not be tried in New York City. It seems increasingly likely that he’s right, as Democrats grow more and more fearful of the political and security ramifications of these proceedings. With Schumer and Gillibrand now saying that they’re open to a different venue, and the White House no longer willing to stand by Eric Holder on this, it sounds as if Democrats are just trying how to backtrack on this without looking like flip-floppers… again:

New York’s senators are open to moving the trial of a 9/11 mastermind out of Manhattan after Mayor Bloomberg said he’d happily see the terror thug take the stand elsewhere.

Khalid Shaikh Mohammed is slated to be tried at 500 Pearl St. in lower Manhattan, a proceeding Bloomberg says could cost $1 billion if the trial lasts four years.

“It’s going to cost an awful lot of money and disturb an awful lot of people,” he said in Brooklyn yesterday. “Can we provide security? Yes. Could you provide security elsewhere? Yeah.”

The mayor said holding the trial at a military base makes sense. Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand say they’re receptive to alternative sites.

Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-Brooklyn) wrote Attorney General Eric Holder to say the trial would harm businesses.

The White House has gone to great lengths to stress the independence of the Department of Justice, and to assert that Eric Holder made the decision to try KSM in New York on his own – without direction from Obama. Is the White House going to override Holder, or is the Attorney General going to have a completely independent change of heart?

One or the other seems certain.

detainees and send them anywhere in the US without express permission or order from the commander in chief.

I believe Holder described his deep research into holding civilian trials in NYC for terrorist detainees by having a chat with his brother and sister-in-law or vice versa, sister and brother-in-law, but either way, it was not a legal investigation of the ramifications, it did not consult any NY officials of any kind, and it has never met the minimum requirement of acting with common sense.

Holder, along with Jennings (champion of gay rights for kindergartners), Secretary of “the system works” Napolitano, and the Gold Dust Twins, Bernacke and Geithner, who cannot now rationally explain to any Cong. committee what it was that necessitated the panic the “regulators” engendered by declaring some (AIG) businesses too big to fail and started the entire TARP and bailout hysteria, should be fired. Bork’em.

The NY senators and NYC mayor should have opposed the proposition from the get-go, but thank heavens for tea party people and the net for driving the news that allows CITIZENS to demonstrate and respond to idiot pol. decisions.

Don’t forget to keep borking Cong., as at this minute, it is STILL trying to bork you with Obamanationcare: 202-224/225-3121.

How about trying KSM at a military tribunal in Gitmo?

    • Brian_Roastbeef

Are there any Democrats running out of Gitmo who find that their reelection bid is looking far more competitive than they ever thought it would be? No? Well, Bingo! That’s the place.

Schumer is a self serving jerk, and Gillibrand is little more than his personal lackey. They’re okay with anything that endangers this country and harms this state as long as their butts are not on the line. NY should be ripe for the picking this November.

Larry Kudlow? Gov. Pataki? You there?

  • smitch61

He is up for re-election… idiot that he is… Any news on whether or not we have a candidate going against this bafoon? Do they have a “chattering class” in NY?

  • http://erickbrockway.wordpress.com/ Erick Brockway

Schmucky Schumer eats the pie he helped Obama make and now doesn’t like it because he has to eat it in his own ‘hood?
    Tough breaks, schmuck.

The issue is not whether terrorist enemy combatants are tried in New York City. The issue is whether they have any right or expectation to be tried with the full benefit of American legal jurisprudence as if they were American citizens afforded constitutional rights.

The central point is obfuscated by this senseless posturing over “New York / not New York”. We need to give these animals a swift hearing by our military justice, and then introduce them to their little friend, the lead projectile.

as many Democrats run for cover on this issue, there are enough to work with and put forth the CLEAR AND DEFINITIVE DIFFERENCE that Republicans (with some Democrats) want it put into Law how these things will be handled and not open for further, per case, debate. Sure, Obama would never sign the changes – perhaps the proposed changes might not make the Floor of either body but I have been writing to Republicans (and Lieberman, and a few other Democrats) calling for them to step up and declare their intentions that at first opportunity such changes would be MADE INTO LAW….

in part what I’ve been writing them….

Tired of hearing the “Richard Reid was Tried as Civilian” distortion

That was BEFORE the 9/11 Commission, before the Military Tribunals discussions and LEGISLATION, SCOTUS rulings, etc?

WE KNOW BETTER NOW AND HAVE THE BETTER OPTION but the MSM plays up the nonsensical argument anyway?.

What would be best would be to AMEND the Tribunal Legislation to clearly delineate that ?ACTS OF TERRORISM;? and spell out ?attempts to Hi-Jack and/or blow up an Airliner? and what-ever else, if need be; will be turned over the Tribunal System. Of course, they won?t do that BUT Republicans (and Joe Lieberman) should be calling for this!!!!

CHANGE THE TRIBUNAL LAWS…. Make it LAW that these folks SHALL BE DEEMED ILLEGAL ENEMY COMBATANTS (not common criminals) and turned over to the Military for detaining and questioning and Tribunal — if the Military Tribunals don’t think they “qualify” they should have Legal Authority to kick them back out to Civilian Authorities and Courts ONLY THEN!!!

We are VERY MUCH the Party of Ideas and we need to be pushing them more…. We are very much LOUD AND PROUD TO BE THE (PARTY OF NO) (actually the Party of kNOw – Republicans must be the Party of HELL NO [to Bigger Govt.] not the Party of SLOW[er Liberal Incremental-ism] when and where appropriate because we oppose RADICAL LEFTIST AGENDAS always! We, of course, always have to push our ideas around the MSM who will certainly NEVER tout them – except for when they can be co-opted and credited to Democrats. Time for more Townhalls from Republicans to outline our Ideas and Ideals as they have been since Obama took office and the MSM helps the Democrats ignore and/or SPIN

I’d sure like to see a Speaker Pence as the third member in the line of succession.

    • Brian Faughnan

I’m just observing the likely outcome of current trends.

I suspect Paul Ryan would be my choice.

  • johnt

Maybe a tent on the WH lawn.
Curious how the worst of the worst of the terrorists deserves a civilian trial, rule of law you see, but other islamist murderers get a military tribunal and a large group of them don’t even get that.
A curious rule of law that.

Sschumer’s upcoming election compells him to say that the trial could be moved away from NYC. HIs New York City base is beginning to become more than a little angry about this nonsense and the threat to their security, not to mention the traffic jams expected. New York State cannot afford this – - weare broke…..

He doesn’t believe what he says, no doubt supports Obama in doing so, and basically is lying.

    • izoneguy

the dems in New York – First the KSM trials and now Obama does not support the 9-11 health fund. Between this and what the EPA does to Kalifornia – it is a wonder that democrats even get elected in these states…..

It’s the revenge of the zero liability voters……

Now Oregon is pissing on the tax payers….
I heard some Oregon businessmen on a radio talk show last night.
They are packing up and moving out – probably to Texas…..

    Here’s my prediction:

    1. A civilian trial of KSM will *not* be an indictment of the Bush administration, as Holder and the other communists in power are hoping.

    2. A civilian trial of KSM will combine all of the worst elements of the Saddam Husein trial, the OJ trial, the Charles Manson trial, and the trial of the Chicago Seven. It will run on for months and months and months, until the jurrors start to envy the Gitmo detainees.

    3. In the end, KSM will be acquitted in a civilian court (there’s no way they’ll get a conviction using civillian rules of evidence, and why bother with pretending it’s a civilian trial if they’re not?). Holder, et al will attempt to blame Bush for this, but the only portion of the American public that will buy this will be the alien abductees. The administration and everyone connected with the trial will be painted as hopelessly incompetent and/or niave, and the end of Barry’s disasterously Carter-esqe first term, he’ll experience the same kind of drubbing in the polls that Carter received.

Massachusetts. It’s the way payback is done.

  • carolyna

was created precisely for the purpose of imprisoning enemy combatants and trying them in military tribunals. But for Bambi and Holder to admit that and use Guantanamo for its intended purpose would be to invite evisceration by their hard core leftist base. They would never do what’s right for the country.

  • http://vbushmills.blogtownhall.com/ vassar

…they should remove the arrogant SOB who sent it to NYC in the first place.

For sheer arrogance, Eric Holder may be OB1′s equal, and being closer to the action, more dangerous. He has committed two grave, grave errors, both without any coordination with other agencies, the binding of Abdulmutallab over for indictment one of the biggest and most stupid mistakes in history, even since the Portland Trail Blazers picked Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan.

    He has to go.

    • penguin2

and plan to do things exactly this way. I bet Obama knows, because if Holder did anything without The Won’s blessing, Obama’s ego take a hit and he cannot tolerate that. Along with these decisions, add in the refusal to prosecute the Black Panthers voter intimidation case in Penn. As long as someone like Holder is in charge of the Justice Department, the American people will not have justice.

The problem Holder is running into, is that they cannot cover up these decisions, and not as many people are sheep out there as they thought. I also noticed how all of this backtracking on the trials in NYC, has shown up since the Scott Brown victory in Massachusetts. Surely, they had these concerns when the decision was first made, but could not gainsay The Won (and Holder). Now they are feeling a little braver since Obama has lost some more political capital.

Vassar, I picture you saying this, “something is afoot here…..”

…going back to Clinton days and “The Pardon”. Not a mistake, I agree, but arrogance lends itself to indifference, just as singleness of purpose does. There are many people of that crowd who neither see right nor left. I am not sure whether that is from naivete, narcissism (Navel-gazing) or ideological purity. I think Holder is more criminal than ideologue.

I had forgotten the Black Panther indictment, yes, that too.

Come November, I think “arrogance” will sell more tickets than “single-minded”. Personally, I want Holder’s head as much as I want Chris Dodd’s and Barney’s.

        Oh, and heh, heh, heh

I don’t see the quote from the “Watchman” you usually have at the end of your post. I read it every time. It is strangely beautiful and chilling at the same time.
I am going to show my ignorance now, and ask you what the quote is from?
        Thanks, memez

    and take Schumer with them.

  • irbobert

After reading all the comments, I have to agree that Holder and Chuckie have to go. These two peas came from the same pod. They both have the same agenda — sink America. Put all three of them on trial in Gitmo — One for being a terriorist, one on an ethics charge and one for being a communist.
