Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) is First Woman to Co-Sponsor Controversial Birth Certificate Bill [Updated]

A popular Tennessee Congresswoman, Marsha Blackburn (R), has become the first woman and the first Tennessean to add her name to the list of co-sponsors for Representative Bill Posey’s (R-FL) proposed amendment (HR-1503).

The bill amends the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, and would require candidates for President of the United States to provide among other things, “…a copy of the candidate’s birth certificate…”.

The bill’s list of co-sponsors continues to grow with Blackburn as its latest member.  The seven [now ten] Representatives already supporting the bill are:
-
  • Rep. Bill Posey (R-Florida) (sponsor)
  • Rep. John R. Carter (R-Texas)
  • Rep. John Culberson (R-Texas)
  • Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas)
  • Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Virgina)
  • Rep. John Campbell (R-California) and
  • Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tennessee)

[and]

  • [Rep. Dan Burton (R- Indiana)] and
  • [Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas)]
  • [Rep. Kenny Marchant (R-Texas)]

Posey’s bill is controversial because there are those on both sides of the political spectrum who oppose the idea that a candidate for President or Vice-President should have to submit a copy of his or her birth certificate for inspection.  The reasoning behind this opposition remains unclear.

The bill reads:

“To amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to require the principal campaign committee of a candidate for election to the office of President to include with the committee’s statement of organization a copy of the candidate’s birth certificate, together with such other documentation as may be necessary to establish that the candidate meets the qualifications for eligibility to the Office of President under the Constitution.”.

and

“Congress finds that under section 5 of article II of the Constitution of the United States, in order to be eligible to serve as President, an individual must be a natural born citizen of the United States who has attained the age of 35 years and has been a resident within the United States for at least 14 years.”

If enacted, the amendment would be in force during the upcoming 2012 U. S. Presidential election.

The bill has been referred to committee in the U.S, House of Representatives.

This diary has been copied and linked to by national news site WorldNetDaily. Bob Unruh’s story is copied from Britcom’s story of an earlier date and the link to “a political website” in the sixth paragraph links directly here.

I am not upset about it though. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. It would have been nice if I were given a hat tip in the story, but the link comes here, so people should be able to figure it out. If Bob or WorldNetDaily had asked me to let them use my story, I would have gladly given them permission to use the story. I am a big fan of WorldNetDaily and I read it every day.

Here is a link to the WorldNetDaily story:

Some of you may remember that a story on NewsBusters written by Britcom went national on a very similar subject when Britcom uncovered proof that a candidate (who shall remain nameless) gave out false information. The proof Britcom uncovered was picked up and used by Reuters and AP, but the scoop of course belonged to Britcom.

Thanks for reading my RedState diary Bob :) And thanks to WND for staying with this story.

Here is another Republican woman who just annoys the controlled media beyond leftist comprehension.

Go get ‘em Marsha! and Congressman Posey too!

that this wasn’t a requirement before!!! Us average citizens have to have a copy of our birth certificate just to apply for a passport, but the President of the United States doesn’t have to show theirs???
This doesn’t make sense at all. Of course, I wouldn’t expect anything the government did to make sense.

He’s been in congress for 6 months and is making waves. I love it.

although Posey has gotten some bad press about this. If Obama has a passport, then a copy of his birth certificate is somewhere at the State Department. (I know; I had to supply mine earlier this year to get a passport so I could go to Canada and Alaska. Yes, to go to Alaska from lower-48, you need a passport.)
Posey spoke at our TEA party back in April (were you there? I might have to check my pictures.) For those in Central Florida, come on out July 4th for TEA and baseball and fireworks for five bucks.

I’m going to try to make it to the stadium on Saturday though.

If you take the Alaska Ferry from Bellingham, WA to Alaska or take a direct flight to Alaska, any ID that DHS/TSA will accept will do. But, if you drive or take a cruise ship that departs Vancouver, you have to have a Passport.

“The reasoning behind this opposition remains unclear.”
    See
“If enacted, the amendment would be in force during the upcoming 2012 U. S. Presidential election.”
which would cut off Obugabe’s “President-for-Life” ambitions at the knees.

  • http://www.redstate.com/britcom/ Britcom

There is also opposition from some quarters on the right. How does one explain that?

  • applycs

Looks as though, except for a very few, all House and Senate representatives have been mute. Where were they when it counted pre-election?

McCain went through this vetting where was our silent majority to push for Obama’s. UNLESS, they to believe that THE ONE’s (mis)conception was not morally questionable. Unfortunately we know ethics play little.

Our representatives no longer care to hide anything, Washington mantra:
“Do it, hide it, ignore it, deny it, misconstrue it, blame it, and denigrate any who ask.”

Always remember Chuck Schumer: “All the chattering classes.”
    We are classes of people.
