Should We Worry That Mitt Romney Hasn’t Been Fully Vetted?

It’s only in the last few weeks that people have started to examine Mitt Romney in detail, despite the fact that he has been running for president for five years.

For the first time, people are starting to discuss the specifics of what he did at Bain.

After 5 years of running for president, the question of why Mitt Romney has never released any of his tax returns has finally been raised. Releasing your tax returns is pro forma for most candidates–no big deal. Mitt Romney seems to be protecting his tax return information like a bulldog protecting a bone.

The GOP candidates have been debating constantly since May of 2011, yet it wasn’t until January of 2012 that someone asked specific, probing questions about Romney’s time as governor of Massachusetts. Other than RomneyCare, what does the average voter know about what Mitt Romney did as governor? Really, what? Name one thing you know Romney did as governor other than sign RomneyCare into law.

The main argument for nominating Mitt Romney is that he is the most electable candidate. But, part of being the most electable means there are no ticking time bombs in your past. In other words, you’ve been fully vetted.

One of Mitt Romney’s primary campaign strategies seems to be to avoid the vetting process at all cost. The phrase “Mittness Protection Program” is a joke, but it represents an underlying truth: Mitt Romney has tried to keep anyone from learning too much about him. He has refused to release his records, holds highly orchestrated public appearances that–like President Obama’s–seem to cross the line from orchestrated to scripted, and he has avoided interviews (at least the ones where he would receive tough questions) to the point that interviewers started to point out on their shows that they could get every GOP candidate but Mitt Romney to come on for an interview.

Whether there are any ticking time bombs in Romney’s past is unknown at this point, because his past hasn’t been fully vetted. One thing we do know for sure: we need to find out now, not wait until after he’s nominated. Because, you can rest assured that whatever Mitt Romney may be keeping undercover by hindering the vetting process now certainly will come out after he secures the GOP nomination, and it will be used by the Democrats to attack Mitt Romney in the general election.

And it’s lasted *almost* long enough to ensure him the nomination ….

Tell you one thing he did as Governor of Massachusetts – balanced the budget …on the backs of the taxpayers.

Is that true? Kind of smart but looks pretty bad. Is there any precedents on this?

Wonder why this hasn’t been brought up.

Romney proved again w/ the tax record thing, nearly every one of his answers are vague, unclear, evasive. Well…ummm…maybe April.

Oh yeah, I hunted varmints, noooo moooose, nooo elk! Yeah thats the ticket!

…which is essentially the same thing, as all the data is on the drives.
Although it certainly raises some red flags. Who the heck buys the hard drive off their computer when they leave a job?

I believe we first heard of this in December of 2011 (certainly no earlier than November).

Maybe it means there’s something there, and maybe there’s nothing. Who knows, but isn’t this the kind of thing that should have come to light and been investigated a long time ago? I mean, Mitt Romney has been the GOP front runner since 2008. You’d think in all that time someone would do a little digging into the front-runner’s past and ask what was going on here.

But nobody did, and now we’re here–at the last minute–stuck having to make a guess about whether there’ any fire causing that smoke.

Seemed shady to me. Wonder why the media didn’t bite?

You know Obama’s people are looking into this behind closed doors.

Everyone performs a cover-up when they have nothing to hide.

    For the daft: /sarc

There’s no need to worry. Mitt has calculated that the firestorm about his revelations will die down before the November election. Who needs vetting? We’ve got Mitt to do our thinking for us.

Yes, you should be, especially since people clearly don’t yet understand what Romney’s “business model” at Bain was. The WSJ questioner in the debate last night tentatively touched on the issue and Romney dodged his question. The “private equity” leveraged buyout model, which Romney pioneered, involved Bain repeatedly taking out massive loans on the companies they acquired and transferring the money to Bain as dividends and fees while piling debt on the acquired company. That meant that if those acquired companies went bankrupt, which they were now much more likely to do, Bain nevertheless kept all that borrowed money while legally being able to stick the creditors with the bill. Sometimes government pension insurance had to go in and bail out the pensions too, even though Bain had pocketed all that cash.

This explains how out of 10 of Romney’s largest acquisitions, 4 went bankrupt, yet Bain still profited on 3 of those. By playing the Wall Street shell game they were able to privatize their gains and socialize their losses. Bain was accused of “unjust enrichment” by at least one creditor. Some investigative reporting has uncovered some of this activity, by sources such as Reuters and the New York Times. With well over 100 companies acquired by Bain under Romney and many bankruptcies, there will be a continual drip and drab of this kind of information coming out. Bain as a company is just as secretive as Romney is, which is contributing to the slow yet steady trickle of information coming out. Go to BuyoutOfAmerica.com for a lot of links regarding Bain’s practices.

and your last line about the democrats attacking is a certainty which is why the vetting needs to be carried out now and that goes for any candidate. Cheers
