FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

ENOUGH!!!

Turn off the freakin' registration page!

The influx of cretin Leftists has made this site unusable and unreadable. When I CAN get to a diary to read the comments, I can’t stomach the crap that’s being spewed by the unbelievable flood of idiots. The Drudge and Yahoo stories have resulted in a tidal wave of stupidity descending upon us.

It’s time for a moratorium on registrations. Either turn the stinkin’ thing off and let things idle through the convention, or implement a waiting period. RedState has become an ungodly mess.

UPDATE: Please read NightTwister’s diary and take his advice about ignoring the trolls. See here for further info. My idea is to flag the troll entries with a simple response of “Slug” in the title, and including a nice little picture of a slug in the body of the comment, making it easier for the cleanup crew to locate the offenders.

I know some other sites have a waiting period before allowing folks to post. I don’t know if it’s possible to do on the new RS site but it would be a good idea. A 24 hour waiting period would reduce the rabble though not eliminate it.

  • civil_truth

Even a 6-8 hour waiting period would stop the impulse trolls, while still affording reasonably prompt input from someone who legitimately wants to participate for the first time on a hot topic.

It really could put a dent in the troll explosion here at RedState. Then we could evaluate whether to lengthen the waiting period.

  • Darin_H
  • Illinicon

I would favor a posting restriction on new accounts. A 48 hour one would likely be the best for stopping trolling, but even 8 hours would cut it down and not be burdensome on people who want to make valuable contributions to our online community.

  • itrytobenice

Today, I’d have paid good money to get my hands on that little Tool for Goodness and Light.

  • bs

it needs to be moderated, to avoid mental cases like “Mary White”. This person is truly a sick individual.

  • Rod_Patrick

had a hardtime to recognize what is legit and what is not.

I don’t want to sound so apologetic, but Shoofly, please accept my apology.

  • Jaded

I would have waited a day, as a matter of fact I am still not a poster on Little Green Footballs because I keep missing their little “hatchling” openings….I had to email a request for Lucianne because I kept missing their opening and they allowed me to join….. I keep hoping I catch LGF but I still read them……it can be done and it should be done….the trope spread around against this VP candidate is proof of the necessity of it.

Do the Directors really want the sickness that infected the site this weekend being here when VIP’s visit? I think not.

  • c17wife

This site is getting too busy to allow just any joe-blow ro mary white to post unrestricted.

I’m tired of stepping all over sh*t in the frat house when the house dads are away.

  • kowalski

Someone grant me blam privileges and I’ll use them with extreme prejudice.

  • c17wife

assistant. This place is really starting to stink with the stench of trolls.

I totally BS. They have to stick their leftist noses into everything. I want a site where we conservatives can blog each other without having to deal with these leftists?! It’s bad enough I have to deal with them in my extended family and at work! And, unfortunately, I live in one of the biggest leftist states, NY!

    Go McCain and Palin!

  • kyle8

but then again I am an evil right winger who eats MEAT and promotes torture! Oh noes!!

  • bs

but after reading the same tired talking points over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over (you get the idea), it gets old. Very old. These mental midgets seem to think they’re being cute and original, but their neural capacity isn’t even sufficient to read a few dozen postings back to see that their cutsie little argument has been demolished already.

It really is a matter of personal inadequacy, I am convinced. These morons are so poorly endowed that they have to post here to build their self esteem. They really should invest in some Enzyte.

Between the trolls and the scores of comments I have posted that have been gulped up by the big bad ISE 550 club, I am about to losing my mind!

Please, please, please shut down registration for a while and get these bugs fixed. We have an election to fight and we can not do it with this bum site.

I read somewhere a while back where RS was being knocked because our threads typically get low post counts. I’ll take 30 posts of substance opposed to 800 of blather everyday.

We’re getting hit with very, very high traffic since Friday. Just look at Sitemeter. The combination of the search hits on the Palin diary, the hits from all across the Internet on the Tale of the Tape post, and the two Drudge hits (Fowler and Palin’s SSN) are just flooding us far beyond our capacity to deal with it.

When the site slows down, that also slows down the ability of the moderators to read and police the site. When it takes a half hour to investigate, ban, and cleanup after a single troll, it’s just hard to keep up.

Further, this is the time of the Republican National Convention. We have many writers out there, and that includes Moe Lane. Just like when he was in Hawaii, he’s not around all day like normal when he’s at the convention.

I’ve by default been working to pick up the slack (and enjoying each blam) but again, when each blam takes a half hour, it’s very hard ot keep up.

So please, be patient. After everything’s settled down, and everyone’s back home, we can return things to normal.

mabe you should empower a couple of them on a temporary basis.

to TURN OFF THE BLOODY REGISTRATION PAGE! It would save a lot of time, effort, and pain on everyone’s behalf. It only need be disabled until the convention is over and the reinforcements are back.

  • Raven

I promise I won’t suck on it or stick it in my nose and I’ll clean it every time I use it. Oh please, oh please, oh please!

Anybody serious has been reading..not reacting

    24/7 Registration…3 day wait

VIP’s can get exemptions…giving exemptions is easier than Chasing and Zapping

And if the Capacity will not be increased..

this would be one of only a few options

  • kevinforrester

I’m a relatively new user (member?) on this site (just checked, 2 days, 9 hours), and am finding it to be an outstanding information resource. However, I rapidly reached the conclusion (perhaps unfairly) that the only stuff of any value is on the front page posted by named contributors, and most of the “feedback” posting is a waste of time. I’ve posted a couple of times, but am concerned that most of the “civilian” posters (like me) on this site don’t even remotely share my point of view (which is, frankly, that Sarah Palin can and will carry this ticket to the White House). I don’t have enough experience with this format to recommend a fix, but I’ll keep reading the front page!

  • kevinforrester

OK, I’ve been looking around this site some more and can see that I overstated my above comment. “Most” feedback posting is NOT a waste of time, and I can see that many civilian posters DO share my point of view, but I do agree with the frustration of running into posts that seem to have arrived here from another planet or dimension. Please accept my apology for my prior post on this subject.

  • bs

The signal-to-noise ratio has dropped so precipitously that it is now impossible to make out the valuable comments because they’re drowned out by Leftist bull**. (Which, of course, is precisely what those [redacted] desire). Since there are so many cretins registering (present company excluded) and so few moderators monitoring things, it’s little more than total anarchy right now.

Sure, it’ll get better later. But you know, the convention is precisely the time when conservatives/Republicans like the “RedState Base” desire to interact with others, and right now that is next-to-impossible. So to write this off as “oh, it’ll go away after the convention” is unfair to those who make up the core of this community.

  • Neil_Stevens

If you all pour recommendations on this, it just pushes an Election-related article off the rec list for days. You might want to recommend a good diary hitting Obama instead.

  • bs

As I recall, there USED to be an “edit button” at the top of the diary entry. But it’s not showing up here. So I can’t make any updates to this.

Until I can update the diary, I’ll just post this item: NightTwister put up a great idea in this diary documenting the “Emergency Hinz Rule™” I think we should follow his sound advice and completely, totally ignore the trolls and quasi-trolls that have descended upon this place in waves.

and the answer is “I am logged in.” I couldn’t have posted the comment if I wasn’t (I think). I’ve done this before – I’ve never had issues editing diaries in the past. This is the first time I’ve not been able to modify my own.

  • Pezman

I stumbled across this sight and found it to be great for information. I know you are only talking about the people posting mindless attacks so I can only say that if there was a waiting period for me to be able to post I would have waited. This sight, from what Ive seen, has a bunch of people who are interested in the democratic process of the presidential election and I want to be able to pick their brains from time to time.

  • Rod_Patrick

    It has a different format.

Hey conservatives, I being one. Let the left have their say. They only expose themselves for what they are. Human beings with little understanding of what life is really all about. let them Troll away as many have put it. Maybe they will just go and abort themselves.

  • stang

At least trolls are usually pretty clear about their purpose. We came, we squatted, let’s go brag to our friends back at (take your pick).

Mobies, on the other hand, seek to sow discord and confusion with their deceptions and should be exposed for the frauds they are and excised post haste.

  • MrSandman

…although I’ve read this site for couple years now.

The signal to noise ratio has definitely increased over the past week…..but I trust Neil and others to make things right.

  • Neil_Stevens

Now that Drudge is giving us a breather, it’s back to normal already.

  • ColbyS

As in, 3 votes from “Full Members” (or some other title denoting 1+ year membership or a certain activity threshold or simply moderators picks of good people) can harpoon a user that is less than 2 weeks registered.

  • speciallist

I’m sure Redstate is getting heavy traffic…

I also can assure Redstate that they LOST about 1/2 of the traffic they Could have had…

I’m not sure how good a link on Drudge is…if people can’t reach the page

With speed and capacity…everything else, including zapping trolls, becomes Effortless!!

    I’ll Shut up now…

  • Neil_Stevens

Logged out users could access the site just fine during the whole Drudge flood. And they greatly outnumber us, the regular commenters and editors combined.

It’s frustrating that we have a system which makes things harder on you, the more active you are, though.

  • redneck_hippie

the solution is. But server not found is imprinted on my retinas.

  • ConservaGeek

It should be just the opposite. I think the programming drones need to go over the site code with the proverbial fine-toothed-comb.

  • Neil_Stevens

I’ve tried many ideas for making it work without a costly and time consuming rewirte… and most of them just aren’t practical or don’t work.

  • WoodenWeasel

I jest, mostly, but the powers that be definitely need to do something to keep the site from getting overrun with trouble makers and trolls.
