Tips for Redstate Writers

Notes from a RS hack

What makes a good diary?

I’m hardly John Steinbeck when it comes to writing here on Redstate, but I do a bit of it in my job. A RS diary doesn’t really bear much resemblance to geeky I/T books and papers, but the thought process is somewhat similar. In addition, there are some “dos and don’ts” for RS blogs diaries in particular. Let’s visit some of these items, shall we?

Style items

  • Think before you write - I always tell my friends that I do my best thinking in the shower. Many times I will come up with an outline of what I’d like to write while in shower-thought-mode. The trick, of course, is remembering what you’ve thought of between the time you think of it and when you sit down at the computer. A brain-dump at the PC is not normally going to provide a high-quality product.

  • Outline - (Just like I’m doing here) It makes it much easier for a reader to absorb what you’re saying if it’s served in small chunks. Furthermore, an outline provides a logical sequence of items that tie back to a larger theme. You may not use an explicit “bullet point” outline, but each paragraph should hit key points one at a time. Remember when Miss Landers taught you 8th grade English? I’m sure an outline to your term paper was a requirement. It works here, too.

  • Use good grammar and spelling - People will judge you by your writing, and if the mechanical stuff is wrong, it is distracting, and your message will be lost. I see so many RS diaries that are just sloppy, and that’s a shame, because many have worthwhile content. Browsers now have built-in spell-check (e.g. Firefox). Get off of Internet Explorer and get a real browser. (Better yet, buy a Mac…)

  • Use an intro and conclusion paragraph - In public speaking, they tell you to “tell ‘em what you’re gonna tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them”. Make the sale at the end.

  • Use citations - Your opinion is nice, but if you’re trying to convince the readership about something, it usually isn’t worth much unless you’re a recognized authority on a topic. We DO have diarists here that fall into that category, but not many. PLEASE use links to other web articles… and use the “link” button in the editor to do it, so the links are clickable (probably my biggest RS 3 pet peeve). A well-cited article is not only more convincing, it’s more useful to the readers as a reference for future use.

RS specific hints:

  • Really short diaries are unacceptable - Don’t just post two sentences and a link. If it’s that brief, post it on an open thread (you can usually find one).

  • Don’t just post rehashes of other articles. There’s a reason you want to post it. Tell the readership what YOU THINK, not just what the article author thinks.

  • Be original - Check the diaries list to see if anyone else has posted on the topic in the last 24 hours. It’s annoying to see six different diaries on the same article/YouTube video. If you have something really profound and substantial to say that is longer than a normal thread comment, post a new diary. Otherwise, post a comment to an existing thread. Originality is another one of my pet peeves. I try to only recommend diaries that have significant original content and/or very well-thought theses.

  • Don’t be shrill - I know that in times like this, we’re all really angry, upset, and prone to vent. My grandfather was an English professor, and he could absolutely dismantle someone with words - not curse words, but well-placed words that ripped them with logic and wit rather than insults and 4-letter words.

Technical hints:

  • USE LINKS - I said it above when discussing citations, but I’ll say it again…use the buttons on the editor to include real, clickable links.

  • Use HTML, if you dare - In my signature line, I have a link to a diary I wrote a while back with FAQs about Redstate. In that FAQ doc is a link to some diaries that Neil Stevens wrote on using HTML. Now HTML isn’t as needed as it was in the old RS 2.0, as we now have the editor that permits some of the “tricks” to be done with the buttons. But HTML still works, to some degree.

  • Embed videos, when you can - YouTube and a lot of the other video hosting sites provide a way to cut/paste HTML “object” tags. You can get the tag from YouTube and just paste it into your diary.

  • Use pictures when appropriate - HTML tags (IMHO) work best here. Make sure the width of your picture is no larger than about 400 pixels so it doesn’t “bleed over” into the other content on the page.

This is a classic example of me not remembering all of my brilliant ideas from the shower, because I’m sure there is more to be said. My objective is to try to help others write successful diaries that are appreciated by the rest of the readership. Like I said, I’m not necessarily the authority on good diaries; this is just based on my own observations and writing experience. Please contribute any thoughts you might have in the comment thread.

This is helpful.

Call me what you want, just don’t call me late for dinner.

Nice.

Great stuff, bs.

One thing though. I believe some of the short blogs are due to the fact that there aren’t enough open threads. RS often goes a week without an open thread.

I’ll make a suggestion. Just above “Memeber Diaries” could be a list of the last 2 or 3 open threads. There should be a new one daily, but it doesn’t have to always be FP’d, and this way it won’t quickly drop off the list. People will know right where to find them

Of course I'd misspell something on THIS diary...

NightTwister Thursday, November 6th at 10:29AM EST (link)

It’s a travesty, to be sure.

Memeber(n).

Good point, NT

Since I now have front-page privileges, maybe I’ll post one here and there. In a couple of weeks, once the post-election angst has ceased, we’ll be ready for some stuff that’s more “open thread” material. Until then, there’s serious stuff to be considered - witness Erick’s posts this AM.

The Biggest thing to remember....Please know the difference between a Comment and a Diary..

I will have a ZERO tolerance for 1 sentence diaries…..

Good diaries get pushed off way too quickly, PEOPLE!!!

Find a good diary and post a COMMENT..can you tell this upsets me?

I promise to be VERY MEAN to whomever brings that sort of crxx…

Look at the REC list and don’t bring Anything unless it resembles one of those Posts…Just DO IT!

Which one? -nt-

JLenardDetroit Thursday, December 11th at 5:32PM EST (link)

If the Topic is already represented in the REC-List… Ask yourself whether you should really being commenting in THAT active Diary rather than creating a new one of the exact (or just slight variation of the) same topic!?!? Long running meaningful discussions are so much more interesting and gets the most out of all of us, as opposed to having the same discussions over and over in a dozen different places!

Not that I’m a mind-reader or anything, but I thought I’d try to drive the point home further AND he’ll be more than happy to correct if I’m wrong ;-)

into not posting diaries, Some folks don’t have the eloquence of others but still have an important message for us.

The open thread would suit those of us better for this reason. Thanks

$peciallist Thursday, November 6th at 12:01PM EST (link)

Sorry, Maggie - that was far from the intent

bs Thursday, November 6th at 3:19PM EST (link)

It was intended to head off some of the micro-diaries, the 50-sentence paragraphs, and the ones that simply post a link and say something to the effect “what he said!”

I’m asking for three simple things:

1) Put some thought into it and be original
2) Format the sucker so it’s readable
3) Write more than one or two sentences, and if you don’t have any more than that to say, put it in an open thread.

I’m not looking for War & Peace. Like I said, this is just my opinion and not necessarily the views of this station.

“Victory comes, though we know not when. We must be happy warriors until the end.

For those of you who struggle with what goes on, who see retreat and capitulation, and who feel like not just your political opponents, but those who hold dear all those things you hold as blasphemous — be cheerful. Be happy. Victory is already yours.

You must just have the courage to not get discouraged and have the will to fight on.” – Erick Erickson at RightOnline

There’s a reason you were promoted up and this is a good example as to why.

If I may be so bold as to make an additional suggestion/tip offer that I follow myself almost every time………..It may pay to write your diary/post on word processing software, do the spell check and make sure all is in order before c/p and then posting.

I always learn at least one thing new daily and today I figured out the following:

Az phar az mye sphellink ghoz, dat dere gubmin’t edumakashun lernt mee dem grammahs reil guud ! ;-)

Now if I can only get my 12 thumbs to type properly, I’ll be set.

Just wanted to send a thanks BS, I have read here for several months and have now decided to begin to post because the future of the Republican Party begins NOW. Im a FredHead from way back and have been laying low and watching things till Sarah appeared. I look forward to adding to the discussion here and thanks again for the ‘heads up’ about posting here.

Heh...funny you should say that

Good suggestion. With respect to spell checking, at least Firefox has a built-in checker that does it in real time.

Don’t answer that!

I could have sworn I saw a search box on RS somewhere, now I’m going nuts because I can’t find it.

Speak to Mr. Stevens regarding why.

In the meantime, a good way to search Redstate is to use Google, and in the search, specify “site:www.redstate.com”. It should find all but the most recent posts (for example, I searched for ’steinbeck’ and used the site: qualifier, and did not find this posting). If you use site:redstate.com, you will also search the old archive site (RS 2.0).

I concur. When I first came here, I did not realize it was set up the way it was.

Perhaps I should have done more “due diligence” by watching for many days and trying to figure out the requirements for posting here.

I did not realize a “diary” was going to be posted. At first, I thought it was just a “diary” where I could post my concerns etc.

It was a very rude awakening to find out my thoughts, feelings, ideas, fears were construed as thoughtless or without substance.

Now that I understand how this site redstate is set up, I will be happy to at least have an option to ask a question or express my idea.

I am looking forward to “rebuildtheparty” and signed up with them.

Not sure what to expect, but hopefully it will be a place where folks on the same team will be greeted with open arms.

This election has been traumatic on hundreds of thousands of citizens.

I am one of those. I saw the writing on the wall with BHO. I was scared and needed to have a place to go where I could get support.

I welcome your change here, enthusiastically and hope it draws more folks like me.

To those who were impatient with me or upset with me, I apologize.

I was scared and just needed compassion and support.

I have 2 sons serving our country. I am a patriot, republican and citizen.

thank you

More basic info on RS?

RborisT Saturday, November 8th at 4:35PM EST (link)

In which I will ask for even more basic info on RS diaries.

Thanks for this post. I wonder if there is also a post that gives the basic overview of RS and basics of beginning a diary?

In conclusion, I hope to find even more basic info on RS, and posting here. Thank you.

the "Local" function threw me...

JLenardDetroit Saturday, November 8th at 9:03PM EST (link)

My first Diary was meant for a Local consumption. So I did what I thought was the right thing and made sure I went to the Local/State and then created the Diary only to find it is NOT specific. The Local function is only a subset of the Category/Tag of Diary. Live and Learn. Would be nice to have a TUTORIAL or HOW THE SITE WORKS thing that must be read before someone Posts their first Diary.

As I said on bs’ Unofficial FAQ Diary, not only should be Recommended, should be REQUIRED - but there was not button for me to select to vote for that. ;-)

I’m a 20+ year IT guy, so it is easier for me to (either guess) or understand what is going on faster than some, and I was confused. I still have no clue what they are going for in a difference between a “Section” and a “Category/Tag” item?!?! I sent Erick an email regarding inconsistent Read More (pagination) function across the site (no, it isn’t your eyesight or memory issues).

IE users can get a browser spell-checker via Google toolbar

JLenardDetroit Saturday, November 8th at 9:14PM EST (link)

One then has to remember to do the spell check before clicking Post however (forgot that a few times).

Sorry, no don’t remember where I got it. Obviously if you go to Google and search for “google toolbar” you should find it no problem. Download, install, setup, and BINGO - a spell-checker for all your data-entry boxes within IE.

not a search, but Category function/use is helpful

JLenardDetroit Saturday, November 8th at 9:43PM EST (link)

And a few more suggestions…

Category/Tag

Now, trouble is that you can’t get to all the tags/categories. Here is the Solution.

Using your browser address bar you can go directly to any Category by using the correct address. They all start the same. An example, from this Diary, is the “Diary” tag/category bs chose. In your browser address bar you can put in…

http://www.redstate.com/tags/diary/

… which will get you to all the Diaries that have been tagged/categorized for such. To go to other categories, you just replace the word “diary” (in the address bar) above and hit enter. Simple! Once you know.

The only other twist, is when it is a multiple word (like is here in EPU’s Recommended Diary list discussion) he used Recommended List. For multiple words, you must place the text “%20″ (percentage sign and 20) between each word. It is a Internet navigation thing, you don’t really need to understand it, just that you can make use of it. To get to “Recommended List” items the web-address is:

http://www.redstate.com/tags/recommended%20list/

While the site formats them into Proper-case when displayed, you can put everything in lower-case letters for ease. Just don’t forget the %20 rather than any actual ” ” (spaces). NOTE: Your browser may (should) automatically put in the %20 should you just put the space in, but I wanted to explain it long form in case some are using different/older software that won’t convert the space.

It’s an IT thing, don’t sweat it.

From there you can scroll/click through the Pages of Diaries related to that subject matter.

The Category works for so many things. So if you want “Sarah Palin” or “Taxes” or whatever, give it a shot. If there is NO category for what you are attempting to look for, you’ll just get an error page. No biggie, just click the Back button and try another category until you find what you are looking for.

Members Diary entries

You like a particular member, you can go directly to their Diaries. Just put in the address bar the following:

http://www.redstate.com/diaries/JLenardDetroit/

Hit enter. That will get you to my Diaries. Simply substitute your favorite RS member to go to theirs. From there you can scroll through the Diary items they created from latest to oldest.

You can get that same list by clicking on a Members name from any one of their Diary entries to see the rest of theirs. I give this example because if a person does not have one currently visible in any List, you can still go directly to their “Page” to see what they may have done you might not have yet seen.

Happy Red Stating… I know I am loving this place.

(RS:Help) (JLD) (Hollyweird) (Brain-deads) (SPIN-cycle) (Obamaocare) (Party of kNOw) (Conservatism) (TEApeats) (respectful) (Reco) (Quotes) (removeRINOs.com) (Merry RSmas)

+ I want “O” to FAIL (here, here, & whole Diary (Ofail) here, is why)
The first Liberal was Satan” - a Rush caller (other Quotes)

Sorry, forgot an obvious use of "Favorites"

JLenardDetroit Saturday, November 8th at 9:51PM EST (link)

For people you like, as you come across them here at RS, you can click on their name to go to their “Page.” From their you can easily use the “Favorites” function of your browser to create a RSMembers folder and keep the links to your favorite RS Members pages for quick/easy reference and navigation. Same is obviously true for any Category that you are looking to continually look for material (new Diaries) on.

I got caught up in the nitty-gritty of how you can “navigate” when you do not have a good starting point to click from within existing Diary entries. Not all Category/Tags, Members, etc… are active on the Front Page all the time. So, setup Favorites in your browser, but with my previous post you now know how to get there if no other option is apparent. As very few of the Category (aka: Hot Topics) are listed directly on the Front Page reference bar at any one time.

(RS:Help) (JLD) (Hollyweird) (Brain-deads) (SPIN-cycle) (Obamaocare) (Party of kNOw) (Conservatism) (TEApeats) (respectful) (Reco) (Quotes) (removeRINOs.com) (Merry RSmas)

Readers vs. Writers

Kevin Forrester Sunday, November 9th at 3:56PM EST (link)

Thank you for your “Tips for Redstate Writers” diary. I also found your signature link to “Redstate FAQ’s” helpful when I first found this site.

I am writing in partial defense of my “short diary” postings. Although I am familiar with the “tell ‘em what you’re gonna tell ‘em, tell ‘em, tell ‘em what you told ‘em” technique, I don’t agree with it in the context of this site. (At least I wasn’t aware that was how the quality of postings would be judged on this site.)

I visit this site for information, not education. I stop by to look at the front page and other headlines for comments on current events and links to more information. I’ll look at the “Recommended Diaries” section for interesting stuff (like this diary), but my interest is generally inversely proportional to the length of the posting.

If I want to read articles (speeches) I’ll go the National Review site, or the Weekly Standard site. And if I really want an education I’ll go to the National Review Digital area and read the magazine online (this rarely happens).

I appreciate this site for the timely information that it contains, links to other articles on sites like I’ve already mentioned, and posts by people like “blackhedd”. But people like blackhedd are the exception, not the rule.

If you’ve got a point to make, make it, but if you want to teach a seminar on something that’s important to you, at least give me fair warning. If “diaries” are going to be limited to speeches and seminars, than maybe you should consider having a section entitled “Recommended Diaries” and another entitled “Recommended Briefs.”

OK, it looks as if I’ve run on quite a bit here. Maybe this should be a “diary” rather that a “comment.” (I’ll leave that up to management to decide.)

Thank you for the opportunity to express my opinion, for what it’s worth.

This is a big help

RoxannaDanna Sunday, November 9th at 5:34PM EST (link)

I’ve come back to this diary several times for reference. And plan to continue to do so. Also, the link to the FAQs.

I know I’m not alone in saying that I appreciate all the advice and guidance I’ve read so far.
