There is a minor little skirmish going on in feminist-land over the quasi-revelation that Michelle Obama will be spending more time raising her kids than in trying to be the Assistant President. It seems the fems are looking more for a Hillary activist-type than a Jacqueline Kennedy-style Cosmo fashion plate & stay-at-home mom. For right now, Mrs. Obama appears to be headed down the mommy path.

One of my favorite pastor/speakers and columnists, Al Mohler, who is the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote on this topic this week. He is very gracious in his comments towards Mrs. Obama:

The entire controversy is illuminating. The eruption of the “mommy wars” is virtually inevitable whenever a woman in the public’s eye makes a similar choice. Whether the words are used or not, the accusation is that such a woman is “letting down the team.”

In that light, Michelle Obama’s choice — and her candor — are truly encouraging. She has almost instantly served as a witness to the importance of motherhood and the honor of rearing children. In so doing, she served the nation — as well as her children — well.

What hasn’t come up in these discussions is the correlation between Mrs. Obama’s role and the reception of it in comparison to the pillorying of Sarah Palin that took place after her selection as McCain’s VP candidate and her standing as a governor AND a mom. Why, the press and the feminists were beside themselves with the idea that Palin would consider serving as VP when she had children to care for…especially Trig. Fortunately, more sane women such as Camille Paglia, saw past the blatant idiocy of the two-faced feminists. Some even were smart enough to point out what the REAL issue was with Gov. Palin – her pro-life position and how she lives it out with her own family. The nerve of her!

Of course it is far too early for us to know whether Michelle will remain behind the scenes, spending her time productively in raising the Obama girls and caring for her family while hubby tends to his mission to turn the USA into a socialist paradise, or if her Hillary side will emerge. Mohler is kind about it:

We cannot know in advance how Michelle Obama will be remembered as a First Lady. If her statements are mere public relations, we will know soon enough. All current evidence points to the authenticity of her words. Many of us have had, now have, and will almost surely in the future have significant disagreements with Michelle Obama over issues of public policy and our basic vision for the nation. Nevertheless, with respect to her elevation of motherhood and the priority of children as an honored choice, she deserves our appreciation and support — and our prayers

If she does retain her stay-at-home mother role and stays in Jackie Kennedy mode, more power to her. The world will be a safer place.
