The Health Care overhaul – it’s all about the “O”

More on Obama's "Waterloo"

Presidents generally start thinking about their legacy in the months before their terms end.  In the case of Barack Obama, his self-absorption began shortly after his election (well, it actually probably began shortly after birth, but I have no information about that period of his life…).  He has thrived on the cult of personality that developed around him during his campaign and thereafter.  He’s addicted to adoration.  And like most addicts, he must feed his addiction.  Unfortunately for the United States, he’s feeding it at our expense, and the latest example is his fixation on destroying “transforming” the health care system.

Maybe he started off with good intentions – after all, leftists like him really do believe that their warped ideology is good for humanity.  And there actually are aspects of the health care system that can use some attention, such as malpractice/tort reform and how to deal with the truly uninsured (forget the 46M myth).  But considering the abject failure of his economic strategy, the reaction to his total screwup in the Henry Louis Gates situation, and the impending demise of cap-and-trade, he needs a victory – desperately.  His reputation as the savior of the nation, and his standing with his acolytes depend on it.  And the polls leave no doubt that he’s on a losing streak.

Charles Krauthammer, one of the most brilliant political commentators in the business right now, completely nails the current state of Obama’s healthcare dilemma.  It’s all about the O:

The president is therefore understandably eager to make this a contest between progressive Democrats and reactionary Republicans. He seized on Republican senator Jim DeMint’s comment that stopping Obama on health care would break his presidency to protest, with perfect disingenuousness, that “this isn’t about me. This isn’t about politics.”

It’s all about him. Health care is his signature reform. And he knows that if he produces nothing, he forfeits the mystique that both propelled him to the presidency and has sustained him through a difficult first six months. Which is why Obama’s red lines are constantly shifting. Universal coverage? Maybe not. No middle-class tax hit? Well, perhaps, but only if they don’t “primarily” bear the burden. Because it is about him, Obama is quite prepared to sign anything as long as it is titled “health-care reform.”

If Obama doesn’t get a win on health care, what’s left of his support will tank rapidly.  His minions will realize that he’s NOT The One we’ve been waiting for, and the polls will go into free fall.

The entirety of Krauthammer’s article deserves a close read, so I’ll simply stop there and say “amen, brother.”

The Huns are at the gates, and some people are demanding a look at Atilla’s COLB.

    Anyway,

Thanks for front paging on CK’s excellent piece. His articles are fed to my home page and this is a great one!

Obama has invested himself way too much in passage of this pile to permit its failure. The longer this drags on the more people are going to be treated to the Real Barack Obama–the petulant, petty, ideological posturer-poseur.

After reading Krauthammers’ full editorial this AM and then seeing the great followup that bs has posted here, I’m circumspect enough to remeber that; though things look more positive towards the goal that conservatives and patriots have with regard to the policies and goals of Obama, et al, we must never underestimate The Left and its army of true-believers ability to pull out a win when all seems to be against them. The Big O has gotten very close to the tipping-point with the American people and we may be seeing the beginning of the down-hill slide, but there is a cadre of people in Obamas inner circle that have the ability to create situations and events that favor the success of their goals, that could push the tide back and squeak out a victory on Cap and Trade and/or Healthcare Reform. Never, ever underestimate The Left! The newly-rising grassroots Tea Party movement has the potential to be the most powerful tool the conservative movement can employ to counter the Organized Left in this country. But whatever tools we have, old and new, they must be used consistantly and without respite. Remember this slogan from the Cold War: “Communism never sleeps”, it is still true today. Conservatism has been napping too much in this nation, especially since Reagan left office. Conservatism must never sleep again.

For the second time this month, congressional budget analysts have dealt a blow to the Democrat’s health reform efforts, this time by saying a plan touted by the White House as crucial to paying for the bill would actually save almost no money over 10 years.

But on Saturday, the Congressional Budget Office said the proposal to give an independent panel the power to keep Medicare spending in check would only save about $2 billion over 10 years- a drop in the bucket compared to the bill’s $1 trillion price tag.

“In CBO’s judgment, the probability is high that no savings would be realized … but there is also a chance that substantial savings might be realized. Looking beyond the 10-year budget window, CBO expects that this proposal would generate larger but still modest savings on the same probabilistic basis,” CBO Director Douglas Elmendorf wrote in a letter to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer on Saturday.

CBO disses the Obama plan for the second time in weeks on Saturday. The cost saving measures in the bill are kind of like the 100 million in cuts that Obama made after spending trillions – a drop in the bucket. Pennies to the dollar. Useless.

I think the CBO should start watching its back.

Rush said it too, it may be on life support, but don’t underestimate the Chicago way of thugs.

I do have question. Hippocratic Oath is in part “First Do No Harm” if that is it, how can E Emanuel have written the death bill that they are using as healthcare bill? It would cause death to elderly, unborn babies, etc. People that are not worth anything to society would be denied treatment. I can’t spell Rahm’s brother’s first name, but I’m quite sure he couldn’t spell mine. He is an oncologist as I’m sure you know.

I called my rep, Ed Markey, office on Monday am, woman had to put me on hold several times. She told me someone read bill last week in 45 minutes, it is only 75 pages long and when I asked about my mother, who has dementia, being denied treatment and what would they do with her, she is in a nursing home because of it. She put me on hold and came back and said there is no such thing in bill.

Here is the bill – (Link below) it is 1018 pages….
There is no way someone could read it in 45 minutes.

Depending on how old your mother is:

Look at pages: 424 -Starting on line 15
SEC. 1233. ADVANCE CARE PLANNING CONSULTATION.

Then go to page 426 – Line 4

??(E) An explanation by the practitioner of the
continuum of end-of-life services and supports available, including palliative care and hospice, and benefits for such services and supports that are available under this title.

I downloaded bill Monday night, I got it here. I printed relevant pages, just haven’t had a chance to call Markey’s office back.

They were afraid of me, I called from my car, stuck in traffic. I knew some of the more relevant info from listening to Mark Levin last Friday. I had call at home from Markey’s office becuase woman was flustered and had someone call me at home. I left that man message that I had no questions, I wanted answers to this list I had created, I have yet to hear back. I know it’s over 1,000 pages.

I don’t understand how an oncologist can swear to do no harm, to do exactly that. I also mentioned a senator that would not be alive if he were forced to take that insurance, one of mine. That might be Obama’s rush, to sign it while he’s still on earth.

  • izoneguy

Hmmmm, that is an interesting sentence. I wonder if Obama himself has a disease? Like – Lung Cancer? Tobacco- related cancers account for approximately 45% of the incidence of cancer in African-American men. The incidence of oral cavity and pharynx cancer in black men exceeds white men by 49.1%. The incidence of lung and bronchus cancer in black men exceeds white men by 40.7%. Obama’s mother died of ovarian and uterine cancer.

The more you read the health care bill the more it sounds like they are talking about livestock and not human beings.
