On “vetting” and the Czars

If you were to search Google News this morning for the word “vetting”, you’d find well over 1500 hits in relation to that word and the Van Jones story.  The current meme is that Jones was not sufficiently vetted by the Obama administration – that his shortcomings and controversial positions were not exposed, primarily because he was an appointed “czar” with no Congressional approval or oversight.

Earlier today, Erick asked “Who created this special job for Van Jones and what vetting of any sort did he get?”  The implication, of course, is that Jones was not vetted.  But is that true?

Over at The Corner at NRO, Andy McCarthy has a different take – one that I believe is quite accurate.  McCarthy asserts that Jones was chosen precisely because of his controversial background.  He says:

The point, of course, is that Obama vetted Jones just fine. President Obama is not Mr. Magoo — haplessly gravitating to Truther Van and Ayers and Dohrn and Klonsky and Davis and Wright and the Chicago New Party and ACORN, etc. Jones is a kindred spirit. Obama knows exactly who he is. Jones was given a non-confirmation job precisely because that circumvented the vetting process. This isn’t one of those things that just happen. This is Barack “Transparency” Obama gaming the system.

A “kindred spirit”.  The two have the same kinds of backgrounds.  They were both community organizers of some ilk.  It only makes sense that Obama would seek someone with the same background to pursue one of his pet policies – “green jobs.”

McCarthy also points out that the White House had to be familiar with Jones’ background, or he wouldn’t have been given access to the WH in the first place.

As former Reagan staffer Jeffrey Lord explains at the Spectator, the Secret Service carefully scrutinizes the background of everyone who works at the White House. With his background, Van Jones couldn’t possibly have gotten into the White House, much less had physical access to the president, unless the top echelon of the administration (I’d wager, the very top) overrode any objections.

There is some possibility that the Secret Service simply fell down on the job and neglected to check out Jones sufficiently.  There’s a chance that the Secret Service is in dire need of LMGTFY.  But the higher likelihood is that the Obama staff simply told them to give him a pass.

In the aftermath of the Jones story, conservatives are no doubt emboldened to go after more of Obama’s czars, with the expectation that they, too, are “under-vetted.”  Indeed, there are several who appear to have questionable backgrounds – from our perspective.  But do they from Obama’s perspective?

In a wonderfully biting article on the UK Telegraph web site, James Delingpole points out that Jones’ mistake was trying to hide his agenda.  He notes that appointing guys like Van Jones is “what socialist regimes do.”

Simple. Because this is what socialist regimes do, as I tried to explain earlier this year in my book Welcome To Obamaland: I’ve Seen Your Future And It Doesn’t Work.

In it, I warned the US of the “smorgasbord of scuzzballs, incompetents, time servers, Communists, class warriors, eco-loons, single-issue rabble-rousers, malcontents and losers who always rise to the surface during a left-liberal administration.”

It’s a pattern.  Delingpole describes how the same kind of whack-job appointments occurred under the Blair administration:

Making these predictions was a no-brainer because it’s exactly the same process as we’ve witnessed in Britain these last twelve years under New Labour. Rather than having all his cronies go through the tedious and unedifying process of having to stand for parliamentary election, Tony Blair simply handed them their political jobs on a plate by appointing them Health Czar, or Race Czar, or Climate Change Czar or whatever. In this way, he could stuff his new governing class with politically-sympathetic placemen – with the added advantage that they were completely unaccountable to the democratic process.

Sound familiar?

This was not a mistake by Obama.  The appointments of Jones, Mark Lloyd, and other “Czars of the Obama Underworld” were quite intentional.  While some will simply write off these extremists as mistakes, they underestimate Obama.  As McCarthy says, “he is not Mr. Magoo.”  Rather, he is a socialist ideologue who has a mission to transform America into a weath-redistributing, big-government nanny state – and has built the team (without oversight that would expose their backgrounds and ideology) that he believes can help him accomplish that objective.

Either way, the ObamaBinBiden admin WINS… If they stick (read: stay) they are free w/o Congressional approval/oversight to do the Radical agenda bidding… If they don’t, then the Race-baiting, ultra-Partisan excuses, etc, all get tossed out to keep the Uber-Blind Loyalty of the ObamaZombies continued to be held mesmerized by the MSM propaganda arm of the Democrat Party.

Addl Comment pieces from me from elsewhere:
    summing up Van Jones

as I said on the 4th (Erick?s Diary):

    Preemptive Troll/Moby post

It is about his CHARACTER? it is about his thought-process? and policies, you ObaMorons?. NOTHING TO DO WITH RACE!!! Can you please grow-up, listen to MLK yet again and this time try to get the point, and stop viewing everything through the prism of RACE!!!

    ? and?.

can?t wait for the chorus of: ?It was only because he?s Black?

that he was fired?. If he was ?WHITE? he?d still have his job? BS?. I cannot wait for that to start and for them to hopefully go the next step and go to ?well, what about _____? (whomever) of the Obamunauts crew?. SO I CAN AGREE WITH THEM!! All the WHITE FOLK that think like the Vanumnist should also be FIRED/REMOVED? to which they will be speechless because it is, of course, not about VanJones, his ?blackness,? etc? but about that they want Socialists running the Govt.

and then on the 5th (streiff?s Diary)

    He wants to be Fired?

so they can go on the it?s because he is Black BS yet again with they continued Race-baiting BS. More diversion/deflection in hopes to garner additional ObamaZombie blind loyalty and pressure to pass Obaminable-Care.

We know him by the company he keeps. And yes, birds of a feather do flock together. I’ve been wondering whether part of the ploy of this overwhelming quantity of czars isn’t in order to add a protective layer around The One so that criticism can be deflected from him in just these types of incidents. If one or three or five get exposed for their radical communist background, there are still twenty or twenty-five left to do the dirty work of destroying our society.

And I see now that I finished typing,,JLeanard makes my same point above, i.e., “throwing radicals at the wall to see which ones stick.”

The so-called green czar that was, had become the face of the Obama administration. It is for that he was thrown under the bus before any more of the voting public became aware of who they elected as president.

It is just like in the Healthcare debate (HC Townhall: Like Hollywood, Democrats used new Actors to replay the same Script.) somehow it is a “SMEAR” to point out verifiable FACTS!!!! This, but it was in his PAST also is laughable… While they attempt to attack (forget who, someone can remind us and I’m just gonna be lazy and not look it up right now) a Republican for a Thesis from 20 years ago… what that clown has said 20 minutes ago is supposedly not pertinent…. 20 Minutes ago versus 20 Years ago…. is that for people who at least get the minimum amount of news, the first thing they ever hear about Jones is that he was outed for being a truther and for not saying nice things about Republicans. Doesn’t that make Obama even more of a hero to the cultists? The spin was concocted to not only fuel the coverup, but to put a shinier gloss on The One’s halo. LOL!

it is only through repetition and maybe the 100th time that it may start to sink in to the Politically Brain-dead – that hey, there really was/is a pattern of bad-associations there — that we’ve pointed out since the ’08 Campaign started and continues just as we TOLD THEM SO and they ignored (and still try to ignore now). As I pointed out elsewhere, though many don’t care because the actually WANT Radical Communists/Socialists “fundamentally reshaping America” as the Obamunist promised.

  • IJB

Yeah, a side-effect of this whole thing may be that it may boost Slobama’s standing among the ‘nutter class’ for having Van around in the first palce.

But, let’s face it – what the nutter class really wants is legislation passed, and having had Van Johnson in there, isn’t going to make up for Obama’s lack of Leftie accomplishments.

And there’s still the fact that Slobama threw Van under the bus, rather than defend him from “baseless attacks from the Right-Wing crazies” (come on – you know there are already diaries on DKos spouting that line!). Ultimately, this doesn’t help Barry with his Base.

The nutters are about to turn on him for a variety of reasons.

Meanwhile, Van Johnson’s hyper-partisanship and Troofer nuttiness does nothing but turn Independents *right off*, and increases their doubts about Obama.

And, finally, the Right is emboldened – it’s another scalp to add to our growing collection.

Bottom line: This whole affair fails to help Obama in anyway.

I did, however find it funny that the lamestream found it necessary to put forward only those problems with Jones which highlighted his hero status with the ignorant class, (hatebush and republicans are A….) Not one peep about black against white racism or communism. Even in this gigantic Obama fail moment the pseudojournalists must pretend that Jones was a sacrifice to the tender feelings of Bush-loving, evil Republicans. Pretty pathetic and desperate. How much longer that crap will work will be seen along about 2010.

Obama Got What He Wanted in Van Jones

    Monday, September 7, 2009 1:07 PM

    By: Ronald Kessler

The Obama White House is blaming inadequate vettting for the misguided appointment of environmental adviser Van Jones. But while the White House undoubtedly missed some of Jones? repugnant statements, it would be hard to imagine hiring anyone who has been in public life without knowing his reputation.

Moreover, Jones? statements are tame compared with those of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., whom Obama considered a mentor for 20 years……..

In Jones, the White House got what it wanted. Americans who don?t understand that are in denial about just how radical President Obama really is.

“Van Johnson”. “Van Jones”. What’s the diff?! :)

  • Bobcat51

Obama, MO and Jarret have vetted every one if these Tsars and the pass mark was to be a RADICAL LEFT WING NUTROOT.

Obama and MO have an agenda and these fools were the tools to succeed in this plot. The WH is full of radicals and Chicago thugs. Obama and MO told us all in their speeches but the blind did not want to hear!

Obama and MO are radical left wing types who have over their lifetimes associated with the communists in the community organizing gangs. We have a real problem in that the Fourth Estate is deader than dead with any form of investigative journalism. It was up to Beck, Limbaugh, Levin Hannity, bloggers and others to expose who Obama and MO really are.

The future is grim if these radicals are not brought to heal by a more informed electorate and sooner the better!

The arrogance that oozes from these left wingers is sickening

Van Jones and Obama shared the same ideology. The IG did not.

Hotair and firedoglake both have good points.

Hotair said that when the Republicans gain the majority back, the left wings will revenge this on the Republican Party. The Republican Party should prepare themselves for these attacks that will come in the future.

Too bad that we have this kind of a two-party system go back and forth. The Democrats have learned beyond the Republicans. The Republicans need to catch up quickly to play the Democrats’ game.

Consider the view that the Second Amendment confers an individual right to own guns. The view is respectable, but it may be wrong, and prominent specialists reject it on various grounds. As late as 1980, it would have been preposterous to argue that the
Second Amendment creates an individual right to own guns, and no federal court invalidated a gun control restriction on Second Amendment grounds until 2007. Yet countless Americans politicians, in recent years, have acknowledged that they respect the
individual right to bear arms, at least in general terms. Their views are a product of the energetic efforts of meaning entrepreneurs ? some from the National Rifle Association, who have press a particular view of the Second Amendment.

    2009, p. 172-173

Without hurdles such as the filibuster (first employed in the 1830s), the American people are not subject to the whipsaw costs that would ensue if all that was required to pass partisan legislation is a simple majority. As it is now, passage of major legislation requires at least 60% in the Senate, and at least a 20% reversal swing to undue that legsilation once passed.

Setting aside the politics of 2009, I think that is an excellent constraint imposed by the American system of government.

  • peg_c

and a lot of us knew it from the get-go. It’s not that these people aren’t incompetent – they really do seem to be. But this RINO whining that Obama has been allowing himself to be pulled to the left by the nutroots and radicals in Congress is just flagrantly ridiculous. This Jones guy ideologically is THE FACE of this regime (I’ve stopped calling it an administration – that’s too respectable for what these crooks and liars are). They’re just having a harder time than they expected hiding the truth (troof) about their czars and other appointees. But hey, they can spin it all as racism. I don’t think America is buying it.

  • http://www.nighttwister.com NightTwister

I honestly don’t know if that’ll be the case anymore. I just don’t know what it would take. Most of the MSM right now would be indistinguishable from a U.S. Pravda, so I guess it would only be guys like Jake Tapper that would be shutdown in a government takeover.

I have to say I saw the potential for Obama to try to become our own version of Hugo Chavez during the campaign. Nothing has happened to change that view.

  • lynnsmith

nothing of what the irreverent Wright was preaching for over 20 years!!
kingO considers himself to be the most intelligent and articulate human on the planet and certainly has an agenda that is still yet to be seen. Why else would he surround himself with such an assortment of leftists, communists and out and out criminals? To say that ‘birds of a feather….” is an absolute. But what can be done about it? For so many years Americans have been spoon fed a socialist ideology that makes a person feel guilty if they don’t empty their wallets for the guy on the street corner with the cardboard sign, “will work for food”. Those of us who have worked, saved, spent carefully, lived within our means and did give to our churches and charities are being dealt a very bad hand and the dealer is kingO. He is working against Americans just as efficiently as an experienced blackjack dealer works a table in Vegas!! He is not afraid of a little resistance. And much like Chinggis Khan, who with his hordes of Mongol warriors would attack from all sides, kingO is doing the same thing. He is throwing so much at the American people all at once that their resolve to stand against his socialist move is weakened because they don’t know what to do first. I have repeated sent out a contact list for all those in Congress and I tell my friends to send emails, call and even write a real letter to those mutts and tell them that O’s plans are not acceptable. And it seems like every day kingO comes out with something else to be concerned about. I am certain he is quite good at a bait and switch.
People who are working, raising their kids, trying to get thru this mess without losing their job or home just feel overwhelmed…..I guess we need a plan….
I heard David Horowitz way that he believed that kingO is the “chosen one” and his “czars” each have a specific role to play in his scheme. Which BTW, has likely been in the making for a very long time, perhaps even to the days of kingO’s days at Columbia.

    Have principled conservatives in Congress.

Predicting that the left is going to attack is like predicting that it will be dark tonight ;)

What we can do much better than the last time we held the majorities is to hold those majorities with members committed to conservative principles, not just a bunch of RINOs enjoying the trappings of govt power and going along to get along.

We can win the arguments if we walk the walk. I’m less worried about the left than ensuring elected conservatives legislate as conservatives.
