Kat-Mo over at Ace of Spades sums this whole “Sarah Palin, the backwater rube, screwed us all” nonsense. Go read it. All of it. And then laugh at the sheer truth of it all. WARNING-Language alert.

Just to tease you-

“…In the first episode at the family BBQ, everybody had just shown up and were standing around until Cousin Sarah appeared. In today’s episode, we join the family BBQ two kegs in and somewhat worse for wear.

Yes, you have been to those kinds of parties, even with the family, where some folks have obviously tapped the keg one too many times. There they are, holding court in the middle of the yard, drunk as h#ll, yelling at the top of their lungs all of the deep dark family squabbles while sloshing that half empty plastic cup of beer around. The squabbles that everybody agreed to never speak about at family gatherings except in whispers for the very reason that we see now: somebody gets pissed off and leaves the party.

Even if somebody finally gets Uncle Dumb#ss or Aunt Big Mouth under control and gets their spouse to drive them home, it is too late. The party is over and everybody is making excuses and exiting stage left as if the last great plague had just descended.”

Ah, this had me laughing like crazy. And Lord knows I need a laugh or two right about now.

Barack Obama

Needing something to read this week as I did my daily running of children all over the German countryside, I picked up Paul Powell’s Feet of Clay. I had read this book several years ago as part of a small group study. In the book, Powell takes a look at 13 emotions that make us stumble. He uses examples of biblical people to make his point. As I looked at the table of contents, I was drawn to the chapter on Ambition.

Honestly, I couldn’t remember who Powell had discussed in this chapter the last time I read it. The chapter on Lust is a given, as were the ones on Suffering, Inferiority, and Paranoia. The chapter about Ambition starts with Shakespeare’s words from Cardinal Wolsey to Cromwell-

“I charge thee, fling away from ambition: by that sin fell the angels.”

That got me to wondering just who it was Powell would talk about. Surely there were many overly ambitious people in the Bible, as there are in the world today. By the third paragraph, Powell is introducing me, again, to Jacob. We all know how Jacob’s story ends. It was enlightening to be reminded of how it all began though.

As I read the beginnings of Jacob’s story, I was struck by the parallels I see with Barack Obama. There are those that see a great potential in Barack Obama. I do not doubt his talent or his abilities. He is a man that has a persuasive way with words and that can be a powerful motivator for the masses. But his actions and associations make me question his motives.

Jacob was the second born son of Isaac and Rebekah. Never pleased with being the second born, he spent his early life contriving ways to gain favor. Bottom line, Jacob was an opportunist. He bargained Esau for his birthright with stew and manipulated Isaac for his blessing with the help of Rebekah. This caused great upheaval and Jacob had to flee his home.

Jacob meets his match in Laban when the deceiver gets deceived. Only after years of struggle, continued opportunism, and strife, did Jacob finally come to terms with his sinful ways. It took the threat of death at the hands of a vengeful brother to allow him to wrestle with God and correct his ways.

If you have stayed with me thus far, you are probably wondering what in the world this has to do with Barack Obama. Like Jacob, Barack is a man unhappy with his birthright. From reading his books, we know he is a man that has been greatly conflicted about where he belonged in society. Raised primarily by white people, he rejects that culture as an afront to his father’s African heritage. Yet, he often doubted his place in the black community. Needing to find a place to fit, he searched until he found it on the streets of Chicago and in the pews of a Black Liberation church.

Satisfied with his place in the world, Barack’s ambition kicked into overdrive. Along the way, he has aligned himself with those that have stepped on whomever got in their way and those that used the plight of others to further their cause. Then when the goal was met, the others were thrown under the bus. Oh, how many people reside under the Obama bus!

As Powell explains-

Worldly ambition expresses itself in three ways, the building of a reputation, the collecting of wealth, and the wielding of power.

Like Jacob, Barack is a man that is searching and striving. He has certainly built a reputation, is enriched by wealth, and is about to lay claim to the ultimate position of worldly power in the seat of the Presidency of the United States of America. Someday, he may well turn out to be a great man like Jacob. But I’d rather him settle all that well and good before he enters the White House.

What do you think?

I cribbed my title and my tag line from Mike Pence. He used this line in a letter to his colleagues that he posted on Human Events on 9-28-08. It was an eloquent letter explaining why he was not going to saddle our children with our mistakes. You can read it in its entirety here-

http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=28751&keywords=Duty+is+ours

This diary really isn’t about Mike Pence though. It is about me and the angst I have gone through this election cycle. The angst of “how can this be happening? Is this really my country? Dear God, where are you in all of this? Can’t you see what is happening? Can’t the American people see? Please Lord, help us.” Yeah, that angst. It leaves me with a pit in my stomach, a sense of outrage I haven’t felt in years, and in the quiet of the night, at times, an uncontrollable sobbing mess.

Each day, I get on the net and look for that bright spot. Stupidly, I get encouraged about whitey tapes and API tapes and fake birth certificates. Those feelings pass quickly though as I do not wear a tin-foil hat. And frankly, that is not how I want us to win this election. So I continue to search. Monday, I happened upon a jewel that told me my search has not been in vain. The jewel was written by none other than poll-myth-buster, DJ Drummond. It can be found at his blog, Stolen Thunder.

http://stolenthunder.blogspot.com/2008/10/god-and-election.html

His blog is a worthwhile read on any day, but last Sunday, he wrote a blog for all times. You must read it all. But I’ll give you my favorite pieces.

As a follower of Christ (though again I have to make clear that I am poor at the practice), the first precepts are to not judge the hearts of other people but merely their actions, to walk humbly and seek God’s will in all things, and to count freedom ahead of peace, justice ahead of freedom, and mercy above all of those other ideals.

Words we all know, but so often forget.
And then there is this-

…but even so I tell you plainly that America is a nation of believers in truth and light, and they do not hold with attacking ordinary citizens for asking inconvenient questions, they do not approve of a media which literally digs into trash to find tools to use to slime one candidate while ignoring legitimate inquiries into another’s character and actions. They do not forget history and they do not embrace the replacement of family and the individual with the government and the collective. Americans who fear God, do not forget duty. Americans who trust God, do not mock sacrifice. Americans who follow Christ, are not impressed with men who would replace God with their own image. Therefore, when we are presented with a situation where one candidate appears to be clearly in line with God’s will and the other major candidate would oppose that will, we must first test our assumptions, and if they hold true we must stand with the one who follow the Lord’s will.

Lastly from DJ, we are reminded that no matter what the polls say, we must do this-

There will come a day, I believe, when we will stand before the Lord and have to account for all we have done, said, and even thought. It seems to me that it would be far better for me to explain why I supported a man whose actions were aligned with the Lord’s teachings, than why I stood by and deserted him when the campaign became difficult.

I know in the end, that no matter what the results of this election are, I will have stood firm as a Christian. I will have stood firm as an American. And when the day comes and I have to account for my vote, I can stand tall and say that I was on the side of good and did my best to defeat evil. And that I left the rest to the Lord.

She took a lot of body blows, a lot of crap. Your blogging colleague over there seems to have lost his f#ck#ng mind, you know. Prior to Sarah Palin, he was accusing me of being a plagiarist, the whole Solzhenitsyn thing, the cross in the sand, and then it turned out that Sozhenitsyn didn’t write such a story. I mean, Jesus Christ, it’s just remarkable. This whole story about how the baby isn’t hers? Jesus Christ. Just crazy shit.

Given these allegations, as well as the well-documented fraud convictions in recent years of ACORN employees, I urge you to launch a nationwide criminal probe into ACORN’s voter registration activities. As you know, federal law prohibits an individual from (1) providing fraudulent voter registration information; (2) conspiring to encourage false registration or illegal voting; and (3) paying or offering to pay another individual for registering or voting. It is also a crime to knowingly procure or submit false, fictitious, or fraudulent voter registration applications. Finally, I must add that, because the violations of federal voting laws by ACORN employees appear to be so widespread, ACORN and its affiliates should be investigated as a criminal enterprise.

Everyday I get up, sign on to the net after I get the kids off to school, and check out how the evening ended in the US. Each time, I say a prayer that for once, just once, something has broken our way. Sadly, I’ve been nothing but disappointed thus far.
People, Barack is running out the clock, just like he did with Hillary.

It is time for action at all levels. Right now, go over to Ace of Spades, read Senator Cornyn’s letter, then copy it to an e-mail and send it to your congress critter and Senator. DEMAND they take action. NOW!!!!!

I read NoQuarter daily to gauge the PUMAs. Honestly, they have more fire than us and they give me better hope. Yeah, yeah, I am now sporting a tinfoil hat. Sue me. Anyway, this rant over there sums it all up for me.

Obama and his supporters have been complaining the last couple of days, accusing the McCain campaign creating mob mentalities. I have read that they are forming lynching mobs, stirring up anger, and causing division.
And, you know what? The people ARE mad. But you can’t blame it on John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Just a little smattering of red meat for you here-

People are pissed off at the attacks they have endured, from Obama supporters, for months.
People are pissed off at being threatened with riots, should Obama lose.
People are disgusted with Obama’s major flip flops.
People are worried, since learning, about Obama’s socialist past.
People are freaked out by the Obama worship, the militant like groups, the blue shirts, the Hitler-esque salutes and symbols, and the children singing videos.
People are pissed off that Obama has very few accomplishments, and is given a pass.
People are pissed off that Obama is caught saying one thing publicly and another thing privately, and is given a pass.

Seriously, go read it all. My guess is you will agree with every single point.

Ace has found an old document from Barack’s Indonesian school days.
Hmm…religion-Islam. Citizenship-Indonesian. So now we have documents listing Barack as US citizen, an Indonesian citizen and a Kenyan citizen. So which is it? Before you all think I’m crazy, I know full well Barack is a US citizen. However, I do think it fair that the public be reminded that he has led quite an interesting life and given his propensity to slam the US on the international stage, one might wonder exactly where his loyalties would lie when push came to shove.

Personally, I think Ace is baiting David Axelrod. And frankly, I love it.

I must admit, I was reeling yesterday with the news of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy. Not that it would change my vote or anything, because it won’t. But I did still have questions. My big questions were-

Did John McCain really know this in advance?

All indications are that he did know about this and Todd’s DUI that took place before the Palins were married in 1986. The Washington Post has a good story on how McCain chose Palin. I had read it before and re-read it to soothe my mind.

Here is the link for anyone interested. It is a good read and should put to rest that this pick was last minute and reactionary.

The AP is also running a story that is sourced from Arthur B. Culvahouse Jr., the lawyer who conducted the background review.

Culvahouse disclosed details of his examination in a half-hour interview with the AP. First, a team of some 25 people working under Culvahouse culled information from public sources for Palin and other prospective candidates without their knowledge. For all, news reports, speeches, financial and tax return disclosures, litigation, investigations, ethical charges, marriages and divorces were reviewed.

For Palin specifically, the team studied online archives of the state’s largest newspapers, including the Anchorage Daily News, but didn’t request paper archives for Palin’s hometown newspaper. “I made the decision that we could not get it done and maintain secrecy,” Culvahouse said.

Reports, 40-some pages and single-spaced, on each candidate then were reviewed by McCain, Schmidt, campaign manager Rick Davis and top advisers Mark Salter and Charlie Black. Among the details McCain’s campaign found: Palin had once received a citation for fishing without a license. Palin, like others on the short list, then was sent a personal data questionnaire with 70 “very intrusive” questions, Culvahouse said.

She also was asked to submit a number of years of federal and state tax returns, as well as any controversial articles she had written or interviews she had done. The campaign also checked her credit. Then, Culvahouse conducted a nearly three-hour-long interview. He said the first thing she volunteered was that her daughter was pregnant, and she also quickly disclosed her husband’s DUI arrest.

Okay, so I felt 100% better about the whole vetting process. Sarah Palin was vetted as well as anyone else. Even better than Barack Obama has been, IMO.

My second question, as a mother, is the one that nagged at me all night. Why in the world would she accept this position knowing her daughter was pregnant and that things could get ugly? I found my answer this morning reading Beldar’s Blog. He quotes an excerpt from Sarah’s biography about her possible senate run in 2004.

In 2004, friends and supporters urged Sarah to challenge Lisa Murkowski. [By then,] Sarah had made a name for herself as a reformer, and supporters thought she had a good chance of winning. So, Sarah approached her family to discuss the possibility. Like all of her decisions, the decision had to be unanimous.

“People don’t believe me, but it’s true. It had to be a family decision,” she said. Todd was up for a move to Washington, D.C. and the girls were on board as well. But son Track, in his early teens, was becoming aware of the contentiousness of a political battle. He valued his privacy, and felt uncomfortable in the limelight. “Track did not want me to run, and he was adamant about it. He had to bless me,” Sarah said. “If he had said at the time ‘This is great,’ I would have done it.”

In 2006, however, Frank Murkowski himself was up for re-election as governor. Continues Johnson (at page 91): “This time, when Sarah talked with her family about running, the decision was a unanimous decision to go for it.”

For me, this is all I needed to see. I needed to know that Sarah Palin did indeed consult her family. And that they were all onboard for the adventure. In my gut, I knew it, but my heart needed proof.

The book is titled-Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska’s Political Establishment Upside Down by Karen Johnson. You can purchase the book here-

I intend to order it today if possible. I’ll also be sending McCain/Palin Victory Fund some more cash today.

Folks, this is probably going to be a rough few days in the news. Let’s do all we can to get the truth out there. I know I am ready to now that I have all the facts.

As I have watched the reaction to Sarah Palin’s new place on the McCain ticket, I have been shocked by so many different things. I don’t know why though. Lord knows the left has spent the last 8 years villifying anything Bush or Republicans have tried to do or stand for. I did hold out some hope that there would be some type of moratorium on the nonsense for at least a couple of days while they at least researched their slams since McCain caught them all off guard. Ha, guess I’m a sucker.

Here is the latest from Politico-

John McCain was aiming to make history with his pick of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, and historians say he succeeded.

Presidential scholars say she appears to be the least experienced, least credentialed person to join a major-party ticket in the modern era.

So unconventional was McCain’s choice that it left students of the presidency literally “stunned,” in the words of Joel Goldstein, a St. Louis University law professor and scholar of the vice presidency. “Being governor of a small state for less than two years is not consistent with the normal criteria for determining who’s of presidential caliber,” said Goldstein.

The article blathers on and on and even mentions this little tidbit-

“It would be one thing if she had only been governor for a year and a half, but prior to that she had not had major experience in public life,” said Dallek of Palin. “The fact that he would have to go to somebody who is clearly unqualified to be president makes Obama look like an elder statesman.”

I am embarrassed that this is what our academic environment, free press, and political climate has become.

One thing I am quite proud of though is this. The McCain camp is not letting this go unrefuted. Steve Schmidt and company freaking rock the house with their rapid responses.

UPDATE: After reading this article, the McCain campaign issued the following statement: “The authors quote four scholars attacking Gov. Palin’s fitness for the office of Vice President. Among them, David Kennedy is a maxed out Obama donor, Joel Goldstein is also an Obama donor, and Doris Kearns Goodwin has donated exclusively to Democrats this cycle. Finally, Matthew Dallek is a former speech writer for Dick Gephardt. This is not a story about scholars questioning Governor Palin’s credentials so much as partisan Democrats who would find a reason to disqualify or discount any nominee put forward by Senator McCain.”

BAM! I love it when the MSM/academia are exposed for the partisan hacks they are. Take that you asshats!

Steve Schmidt, you rock! Keep it up! If I didn’t know better, I’d think he just might be the second coming of Karl Rove.

I know many of you here think James Dobson is a quack, detriment to the cause, etc… But we can not deny that he is a vocal force for Evangelical Christians and that many, many people listen to what he says and take it to heart.

Dobson: You know, Dennis, the things that concern me about John McCain are still there. I made those comments not just based on emotions, but based on his record and some of the things that took place—embryonic stem cell research, and other things, the campaign finance, and other things. Those are still there. So, there’s still concerns. But I tell you, when I look at the choices that are ahead and what the implications are for this country, and now especially with this selection, with just an outstanding V.P. candidate as a running mate, I tell you what I am relieved and very excited.

Make of it what you will, but I think this is very good for our side. Colorado will be critical this year. Having Dobson’s enthusiatic support is huge. It may well be the difference between who sits in the Oval Office and it may well help hold that Senate seat.

Fox News is reporting that McCain has indeed chosen his running mate and will appear with him/her tomorrow at 11:00 AM.

The identity of McCain’s vice presidential selection is still unknown, but the presumptive GOP presidential nominee made the decision Thursday and is expected to shortly notify his selection, according to campaign manager Rick Davis.

So now we wait and continually refresh Marc Ambinder as he was the one to figure out Biden from the movement. Will McCain botch it as bad as Obama did? Gaw, I hope not.

50/50-I say it’s Romney. Just my gut.

UPDATE-via The Corner

Leaked? [Yuval Levin]
The usually well-informed Marc Ambinder says Fox’s Carl Cameron has McCain’s VP pick. We’ll see. If they leaked it intentionally, it’s an unfortunate and unwise move.
