FRONT PAGE CONTRIBUTOR

Ex-Dem Chair Apologizes for Inappropriate RNC Hurricane Remark

If You Can Call That An Apolpgy

Don Fowler, the callous former Chairman of the Democratic National Committee, apologized on Sunday for laughing at the fact that Hurricane Gustav might hit the New Orleans area at the same time President Bush was scheduled to address the Republican National Convention:

“If this offended anybody, I personally apologize,” Fowler told ABC News. “It was a mistake, and it was a satirical statement made in jest. And one that I clearly don’t believe.”

RedState’s Absentee caught the uncaring Fowler making his inappropriate comments on an airline flight from Denver, Colo., to Charlotte, N.C., following the Democratic National Convention.

In the recording, Fowler says:

“The hurricane’s going to hit New Orleans about the time they start. The timing is — at least it appears now that it’ll be there Monday. That just demonstrates that God’s on our side. [Laughter] Everything’s cool.”

I’ll bet that doesn’t seem very funny to all the folks being evacuated in the face of Hurricane Gustav.

You can watch Absentee’s video of Fowler’s indiscretion here.

Fowler didn’t learn his lesson very well. The Former Chairman of the Democrats offered a political required, if insincere apology. Fowler then went on to insult Absentee — calling him “some right-wing nutcase.”

COMMENTS

  • Damiano

“One doesn’t anticipate that one’s private conversation will be surreptitiously taped by some right-wing nutcase,” said Fowler. “But that’s the nature of what we’re dealing with.”

Before Fowler potificates on the corruption of right-wing nuts, he should consider Chris Dodds insistence in pushing his views on Katrina, Gustov and the RNC on CNN’s Late Edition.

Once this is over, these idiots need to be called out on their exploitation of human suffering and natural disasters. It’s too bad that it’s likely too late to tie them to beaches in front of the approaching storm.

“If this offended anybody”? Of course it offended people! It’s human nature for a person to show scorn at someonek who cackles at the thought of their home being leveled.

Now he’s trying to use that played-out, typical, caught-red-handed Democrat excuse. “It was a joke.” Oh, please. You know, for a joke, it wasn’t very funny.

  • Rod_Patrick
  • Tempered_Steel

Would that mean it was “Left Wing Nut Jobs” That scanned Newts cell phone, recorded it, and gave it to the DNC way back when? When a Rep is taped it’s news, when it’s a Dem it’s a “satirical statement made in jest”. No big deal.

    • gclaghorn
      • Just_Me

no need to apologize to all the nuts who didn’t get the joke.

I would rather him just be honest and admit he doesn’t care about the people of New Orleans/gulf, since he doesn’t really know them-he is just glad their misery will put a damper on the GOP convention.

I am having a problem though finding any humor in his joke, and am not really sure where the satire is. Maybe I just don’t have a democratic sense of humor where people dying is alright if it hurts the GOP.

  • Vladimir

…these Clintonian apologies don’t wash: “I’m sorry if you were offended”, my a$$.

As a resident of South Louisiana eighty to ninety percent of my friends and coworkers are evacuated. Our business has an office in Houma, LA, so our two Houma-based employees’ homes will be directly impacted by the surge and the brunt of the storm as it moves ashore.

Lafayette, where I live, should survive OK as it is (mostly) well above sea level and the storm will have to traverse 80-100 miles of marsh to reach it. Things will probably be OK in Lafayette.

However, my 83 year old parents’ plans to evacuate yesterday by commercial air flight were quashed by last-minute health concerns. Stuff happens with the best-laid evacuation plans.

I’m 1,000 miles away. Please keep us all in your prayers.

So, having said that, I’m a right wing nut-case.

    • gclaghorn
  • kandrew

Fowler’s apology makes things 100% better.

I guess that we right-wing nutcases don’t get it. Only Democrats are smart enough to appreciate satire at its finest. Moreover, only Democrats are able to employ satire so well that to lesser comedic tastes, it comes off as a crass and insensitive remark.

(If no one picked up on the sarcasm above, I blame the inability of text to convey it).

The stupidest thing is that New Orleans is a city that votes for the Democrats. If anything his remarks were insensitive and stupid.

  • bclarkj

Having heard what liberals say and “joke” about on a public commercial flight makes me even more curious what was going on at the Brown Hotel in Denver that they didn’t want the public to see that made them have an ABC “mainstream media” producer arrested. Hmmm?

  • bclarkj

You know Fowler or his staff has probably been doing what they can to find out who was sitting behind them on the plane to “expose” this despicable “right-wing nutcase”. If they do, stand proudly and let us know!

  • Random_Numbers

…and if I knew it was being recorded, I wouldn’t have said it.

Mark Furman probably said the same thing.

I hope you’ve enjoyed your one hour here, because it’s rapidly approaching its end.

        • rstreu

and isn’t any more accurate this time around either.

          Piss off.

          • mikewas

…might be just the trick. We’ve already got the video.

          • mikewas

Trent Lott made some jokes, too. And the left hounded him out of office.

Robert Byrd? Still in the Senate after his indisputably racist remarks.

  • bluebloodwithmoney

    • rstreu

it’s your abject stupidity that bothers me.

      • Rod_Patrick

Why such hate in your heart?

PALIN IS MCCAIN’S THE BEST OFFER NEXT TO MCCAIN IN REFORMING WHITE HOUSE… DESTROY BOTH CORRUPT DEMOCRATS AND CLONED REPUBLICANS!

Palin 101: Corruption is non-partisan evil spirit.

You should be scared… because your mouth shows how corrupt and partisan you are.

        • gclaghorn

…why are you reading it? Does that make you ignorant, too?

          • gclaghorn
          • Rod_Patrick

Sorry, it’s your choice. Deal with it.

As Palins having 5 kids, well sorry if they surpassed your goal, if think raising a kid is a contest.

you’re ignorance is very very sad.

      And your’s is awe inspiring.

that gay people are flighty, emotional, and unserious. And they can be real bitchy too.

        • Martin_A_Knight

Are you under the impression this is something new for us? Or that the Democratic predisposition to venerating abortion above childbirth is something you’re the first to demonstrate?

Guess what? You’re an idiot. A really big hate-filled idiot.

PS: What does your verbal diarrhea about a woman who is head and shoulders above you in practically every field of endeavor and moral character have to do with the fact that a leader of your party is actually happy at a hurricane once again destroying homes, property and lives in New Orleans.

          • Tempered_Steel

bluebloodwithmoney Wrote ” He picked her because of her ovaries.. Would McShame have picked a MAN with the same credentials???”

            No, men don’t have ovaries.

Basic bio, but I thought you dems were up on that science type stuff… You know, ovaries make eggs, sperm gets eggs, dems kill eggs that sperm touch.

          • kyle8

is your hate toward Palin, McCain, and Conservatives. That is why you are a troll. You stated unequivocally that Palin was chosen only for her ovaries. In other words you just crapped on two generations of women’s liberation.

You are so hung up on your own identity politics you fail to see how insulting you are to others.

Go away and stew in your on stupidity jackass.

  • Right_Again

that the left-wing nutjob who got caught reveling in the fact that the hurricane would hit during the GOP convention has the temerity to denigrate absentee for catching him in the act.

    • gclaghorn

of the combination of these particular traits of yours:

      (A) Are a liberal.

      (B) You are on a conservative opinion website.

      (C) You are deliberately posting messages that are intended to make us angry.

To sum it up, you are a liberal on a conservative opinion website that is deliberately posting messages intended to make us angry.

The content on this site is not intended for you. It is intended for people who share our right-of-center opinions. Do you understand?

Now that we’re finished here, get out and run home to mother.

  • TexasTom

Just caught the end of the on air host in the studio, say to the NOLA reporter, after the cameras showed a FoxNews Billboard being blown down…”I guess that show that God doesn’t like Fox either.”

I hope the clip of that is part of a YouTube “Gustav Dem Montage,” showing the DNC dude on the plane, Michael Moore and this idiot. If anyone can get a clip of this I occured at 0928 Eastern, on the PMS of NBC.

    • Martin_A_Knight

The very opposite of an open mind.

      Dealing with your issues:
      1. Abortion; be honest, you’re not against it. Your first instinct was to rail against the audacity of Sarah Palin having more than two children and excoriating her for not terminating the pregnancy of her last child because he had Down’s Syndrome. What does this have to do with Dan Fowler and his joy over Hurricane Gustav?

      1. Who gives a damn? Certainly not Republicans. If you like, you can live in a pansexual polyamorous household with seventeen individuals, sign all sorts of legal documents arranging what goes where and who gets what, and no one here would do more than shrug and not give you a second thought. It’s when you try to get the State (i.e. the rest of us) into it that we bare our fangs. What does this have to do with Don Fowler showing us what he thinks of the people of New Orleans (i.e. a political opportunity)?

      2. So? What does this have to do with Don Fowler celebrating Hurricane Gustav?

      3. The problem with you Lefties when you attempt to use any sort of religious scripture is that you always miss. i.e. give unto others is not the same as take from others and give to others. What’s interesting is that you’re ignorant about who gives more to charity – it’s not liberals.
PS: You go to “feed the poor“? What a revealing turn of phrase … are you under the impression that poor people are pets?

You’re stupid and you’re operating on a full tank of ignorance. That’s what makes you a troll.

      Have a nice (banned) day.

      • gclaghorn

…but now I think it’s time to invoke the Hinz rule. Let’s stop beating a dead horse.

  • kowalski

Absentee, you have finally been unmasked by someone the public can really trust as a “right wing nutcase.” I, of course have had my suspicions all along that all of the thoughtful prose, all the creative and entertaining writing, and all of your devotion to Redstate, your family, your party, and to the public’s right to know was a cover story for the fact that you’re really a nutcase.

I, of course, am a nutcase too, and I have been unmasked by “right-thinking people” (to paraphrase Joel Achenbach of the Washington Post as a bonafide, certified crazy man.

If you were green and a female, I’d call you Marta, for I am LORD Garth!

Particularly when you violate the cardinal rule of upper-echelon D’s: never display in public what you really think. It’s crucial that the Firewall of Truth between the public and private statements of Democrat leaders be maintained! Because it allows them to maintain the essential duality of the Democratic Party in its all-consuming situational ethics propaganda initiatives!

Regardless, I can say to you, my brother: Nutcases of the World, Unite!

My credientials as a “right-wing nutcase” BTW are unimpeachable (so I should know one when I see one), and everyone from CNN who was in St. Anselm knows just how much of a crazy person I am, particularly when I unmasked for their producers one of the gang of conspiracy theorists who had infiltrated the Spin Room in order to disrupt the proceedings and turn their debate into a circus.

I’m nuts! And Megan and Mara from CNN know it!

          • gclaghorn
  • zzazazz

Nice try but this is a nonissue. I’m sure Fox “News” will attempt to hammer this into the ground but a private conversation secretly taped? Pretty damn rude if you ask me. Who hasn’t made on off-color joke about a natural disaster in private? This fake outrage displayed by this website is laughable.

    • bs

So you’re basically asking “Who ISN’T as big of a dumbass as Fowler?” The answer is: most of us…few people with an ounce of morals would joke about such things. But you wouldn’t understand that, since you possess the same sick mentality as the other leftists. And how quaint that you’re so concerned about the “privacy” aspect of this – I’ll bet you were at the front of the line defending Newt Gingrich’s privacy when his cellphone conversation was recorded by one of your co-conspirators, weren’t you?

You’re all the same…devoid of morals, intelligence or standards of decency. Now go back to Kos and wallow around with the rest of your porcine friends.

  • bluebloodwithmoney

  • Andysforsmalgovernment

Your first post in this blog was a rabid, slobber spewing rant which did nothing at all to indicate that you might be an intelligent, educated individual with an opinion that might interest us.

If you want us to listen, try making yourself sound like an adult instead of a child screaming about the cookie jar being empty.

  • mom2oneson

I don’t get #3. Anyone who is very low income and does not have savings or an expensive car can get food stamps within 30 days of applying. There are food banks and charities that will give someone food or gift card if they are waiting on their application. Almost all of these places are accessible by public transportation too. Caseworkers can give an applicant a referral to get food from a charity more frequently that what is typically allowed while they are waiting for their application to be processed. Some of these places even have bus passes.
Even if someone can’t make it in the office to apply for food stamps they can mail in an application and do a phone interview.
There isn’t a church in the US that does not have a food panty.

  • gclaghorn

It’s the trifecta of sheer, banally liberal fatuity.

How can you be a gay, and a Christian? The Bible preaches upside-down, inside-out and backwards that homosexuality is one of the worst sins possible.

  • kyle8

there were NO MEN with her exact same credentials. She was chosen to shore up McCain’s standing with conservatives and especially conservatives from the west and south like me who like a reformer.

The fact that she is making the left apoplectic is proof that she was a good choice. Furthermore the spectacle of LEFTWINGERS complaining about identity politics would be laughable if it was not so sad.

So I have demolished your position now go away.

  • streetwise

    The idea is intriguing, however.

  • Rod_Patrick

you are a hypocritical gay liberal. Here:

You accuse Palin of imposing what she represents:

She wants to impose her views on the country. … How selfish is that? 2 kids to replace 2 parents..

Yet you want to impose yours:

Guess what again… I”M GAY! yep, and live in a red state!!! Guess what, PEOPLE love me and my partner… and we have 2 NORMAL KIDS!! and we own guns..

Last time I looked, the first one is the NORMAL viewpoint in American society and there’s no need for imposing the same.
