Obama: ‘McCain Has Not Talked About My Muslim Faith’

Obama Still Needs To Confront His Muslim Issue Head On

UPDATE: Moe has debunked this post see “The Obama Muslim video, revisited.”

This is not exactly what I had in mind when I said Obama should address his Muslim issue head on:

John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith.

I’m sure before long we will hear that this clip is taken out of context, that Obama misspoke, and Obama will explain what he really meant to say. In the meantime it sure sounds like an admission that he is or was Muslim.

I did try to find the context of the clip. All I can find is this from ABC:

Obama also suggested that the McCain was behind persistent rumors that Obama is a Muslim rather than a Christian.

“These guys love to throw rocks and hide their hand,” Obama said, referring to the Republicans.

Reminded that McCain and his top aides have denied pushing the Muslim rumor, Obama said the rumor is “being promulgated on Fox News … and Republican commentators who are closely allied to these folks.”

He later added, “What I think is fair to say is that coming out of the Republican camp there have been efforts to suggest that perhaps I’m not who I say I am when it comes to my faith.”

I have not heard any commentator, Republican or otherwise, promulgating rumors that Obama is Muslim. To the contrary commentators are always careful to point out that Obama is in fact Christian.

As I said in “Obama Should Confront His Muslim Problem Head On,” I was raised to respect others and was taught that I should strive, like God, to be “no respecter of persons.” I’ve always tried to do that. It does not matter to me what a person’s religious beliefs are. What is important to me is that our leaders have some religious belief.

It totally ruins it for me. It makes it look so fake. You can’t even see if he’s making air quotes with the close up. :(

To quote myself, verbatim, from a post I just made in another thread:

And as for “MuslimGate,” it’s an obvious slip of the tongue. The context was a conversation on the claim that Obama is secretly a Muslim and he obviously was falling that train of thought. You’re lost in the train of thought of the central topic of the conversation (ie.g. “being a Muslim”) and that’s the next thing you say. We’ve all done it.

Let me go on the record here and now and say that anyone who tries to make more of it than that is a RACIST!

So after all the threads about Obama sitting in the racist “Christian” church of Jeremiah Wright, now we’re back t arguing that he is a Muslim after all?

I was getting ready for church and had was watching Steph interview Barry. It struck me when he said “my muslim faith.”

In fairness, Steph corrected him immediately, and said, “your Christian faith.” Obama acted as though he meant the phrase “my muslim faith,” and that he was using it to mean that people are out there saying he’s a muslim.

The problem with this is that I’m not sure a Christian makes that slip of the tongue. The phrase “my Muslim faith” is so foreign to me as a Christian that I don’t think I’d ever say it without cringing.

Nevertheless, I don’t think this was an admission by Obama that he is or was a Muslim. Instead, it’s more proof that he’s bad off the cuff.

The only thing I would say that in the context of the conversation and his situation — that is, he is addressing the recurrent claim (which has, thankfully not been made by John McCain or any reputable conservative) — it would not be “foreign” for him to make that slip of the tongue. Imagine if you had to constantly address allegations that you were a Muslim?

My guess is that that is something neither one of us has ever had to contend with. And if you did, my guess is that it would be on your mind.

        about it!

The MSM King of Invesco will accuse them of whatever “incoherent reason” he can contrive!

He will use it again as “self-hate” strategy!

It is no wonder Obama so often says one thing and then later says he meant another.

He is constantly trying to present himself and his plans for this country as something palatable to the listening electorate.

Yet his true self and true intentions are not vote-getters with the majority of Americans.

Ergo, his truest self and plans keep leaking through the campaign-talking Obama and THAT’S what keeps producing these disconnects. (Like his remarks on gun rights the other day in a diary here on RS.)

          • Rod_Patrick

The video was taken in June.

Still McCain/Palin must not say anything about this.

Never give Obama a chance to open his mouth.

          • Kate_Shanahan

I don’t believe I would make that mistake. And I doubt if the media would correct me immediately.

One of my black Republican friends believes the media is biased against Obama. He takes personal any criticism of Obama, any mention of Muslim faith, Wright, Ayers, Resko.

I asked him if he was voting for Obama, since he is opposed to pretty much everything he stands for. He is voting for Obama, has donated over $1,000 to his campaign, and will probably never be a Republican again because of his blinded love affair.

I asked him why he was voting for Obama, and the only reason he could give me was because Obama is black. I said is that the only reason, and he replied “yes”. That’s all I need to know.

  • Raven

There was something written about him in the MSM trying to win over female voters by claiming he’s just as feminine as Hillary (a claim not hard to believe).

But as I look at him sitting there, I wonder if maybe there’s something to it, after all. How often do guys sit with their legs crossed like That?

    • Rod_Patrick

I take back my Mistake! I was confused by Dan’s intro line when I read it again. I thought I was wrong and it’s only a deja vu. The video is really “fresh”. (Over-excited, LOL!)

The rural background of Obama is really real…he’s copying Sarah Palin!

He wants to be like Sarah? Hmmp.

      • ZootSuit

And even if true, even if “you” would not make the mistake of phrasing your response as “my Muslim faith” as Obama did, that still does not has no bearing on the question of whether Obama or even most people would.

The remaining paragraphs of your post above have no bearing on neither the subject at hand (i.e. Obama’s use of the phrase “my Muslim faith”) nor the subject of your first paragraph (i.e. whether you personally would use the phrase and if you did, whether the media would correct you or not). However, why don’t you invite your Black Republican friend to join RedState?

Perhaps BlackRepub and I can convince him to vote for John McCain. Or maybe he can convince us to vote for Barack Obama. Who knows, but if he really is a Black Republican as you say, he might find RedState to be interesting, regardless.

Finally, as to Obama’s use of the phrase, “my Muslim faith,” please see Moe Lane’s blog and here.

“Let me go on the record here and now and say that anyone who tries to make more of it than that is a RACIST!”

It was definitely an Obama misspeak and the shorter version takes the remark out of context (sorry, Dan), but don’t you think that it would better be described as being prejudiced against the religion of Islam, rather than being racist, or are you being funny? I’m fairly new here.

  • Yared

What strikes me the most is that he doesn’t even notice it slipped until Stepho pointed it out.

I’ve never thought he was a Muslim, but it’s always fun to watch his idiotic gaffes.

  • lonebeagle

He was not speaking about the McCain camp’s attempt to call Barrack a Muslim, since the syntax and sentence would have made absolutely no sense if this was the case.

“…to talk about my MUSLIM faith…”

The other possibility is, is this guy is completely hopeless without a teleprompter.

A normal person would have said: “the McCain camp’s attempt to claim that I was a Muslim”, or “their claim that my faith was Muslim, not Christian…”

I believe that Obama is not a Muslim in any way, but rather he is just not very good at speaking and not very smart.
