President Obama and Democrats continue to defend tax cheats

Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter.” — Senator Tom Daschle, Congressional Record, May 7, 1998, p. S4507

Tom Daschle, President Obama’s nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, is singing a different tune today.

“I am deeply embarrassed and disappointed by the errors that required
me to amend my tax returns,” said Daschle, the former Senate Democratic
leader. “I apologize for the errors and profoundly regret that you have
had to devote time to them.”

The apology came more than seven weeks after Obama nominated him and a month after Daschle decided it would be a good idea to file amended tax returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007 to report $128,203 in back taxes and $11,964 in interest on income he apparently forgot about. According to the Senate Finance Committee’s report, there are still unresolved issues concerning Daschle’s income and charitable contributions.

President Obama and leading Democrats, as they did for Treasury Secretary Geithner, rallied around Dacshle’s tax cheating.

Yesterday, Politico’s Jonathan Martin and John Bresnahan reported Obama remains committed to Daschle’s
nomination. Today, Obama reaffirmed his support for Daschle. When he was asked if he still supports Daschle despite tax “errors,” Obama gave a one-word reply, “absolutely.”

On Saturday, Democratic senators John Kerry, Patrick Leahy, Ted Kennedy and Charles Schumer defended Daschle.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman, Senator Max Baucus, issued a statement supporting Daschle’s confirmation.

According to Chris Wallace, all of this Democrat support for tax cheats lead one of the top Republicans in the House to say:

“Listen, no wonder that Democrats don’t mind raising people’s taxes, because they don’t end up paying them themselves.”

Republicans are opposed to raising your taxes. Democrats are opposed to paying them.

Why aren't Republican's opposing this nomination?

We can blog and blog but the party ‘leadership’ is not opposing this tax cheat. The time to speak is NOW.

Or we can find new leadership.

It's another 'compare and contrast' situation

The main Dem argument seems to be that “all the good he has done in his life offsets a few mistakes.” His “good” apparently consists of serving 18 years as a liberal senator, but I digress.

Let’s compare how they pontificate about him compared to oh I don’t know let’s say the handful of pedophile Catholic priests. Didn’t they do many thousands of good things in their lives (while not getting paid hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars like the benevolent Mr Dashle) and make a few “mistakes”?

I’m not saying pedophile priests should get a free pass, but gosh darn it nether should millionaire cabinet appointees!

Republican leadership is stupid

if they think there is no cost to voting for the Obama tax cheats.

How can they be credible advocates for integrity and honesty if they vote to install liars and tax cheats, even if the President asks them to?

Nothing good will come from it, and one must wonder why they even consider voting for these guys.

One must also ask why no major Republican has come forward to stop Judd Gregg from abdicating his important role in the Senate, and why he would consider doing it.

McConnell and company are no longer serving their constituencies, and they don’t even realize they aren’t serving their own best interests, either.

What is new is the magnificent opportunity they have RIGHT NOW to show the difference between the principles and ethics of the two parties.

There has never been a better time to take a stand and for it to be understandable.

Ah yes, the ole "definition" game...

USNJIMRET (Diary) Monday, February 2nd at 6:56PM EST (link)

Ya see, a “tax cheat” is anyone not a liberal Democrat who fails for any reason at all, to pay their just taxes.
Whereas anyone else, who IS a liberal Democrat, is guilty of nothing more the a ‘mistake’, an ‘error’, an ‘oversight’.
I mean, gosh and golly, they, the liberal Democrat, is just so darned busy and consumed by their desire to help all the little people, that their little “oops” are what you would expect from just, well…anyone (who happens to be a Liberal Democrat of course.)
Once again (still?), the (D) thing stands for deny, deny, deny……and point fingers!
