Why I do not Support Rick Perry

I have recieved a number of comments in support of Gov. Rick Perry. Perry has a number of very good qualities, and at first I leaned very strongly towards him.  However, here is why I do not support him:

1.  His lack of knowledge about Washington.  I am strongly opposed to having a Washington outsider as president. Why?  We need someone in office who knows how to actually do the job.  At first, I thought Perry was such a person.  However, that is not true.  He has shown that he has no clue about the federal workforce he will lead (he thinks federal workers cannot be fired; and thinks they can negotiate wages), he does not appear to know and understand which departments do what (and shown by his complete lack of ability to get into details of how he will manage closing of 3 deparments), and he appears to be largely ignorant of what sorts of policies can actually pass in Washington (see his energy plan, which is a non-starter politically).  Perry may be very knowledgable about Texas, but he is not ready for Washington.

2.  His poor debate performance.  I started watching him in the debates as a supporter of his.  However, even from that point-of-view, he never won a single debate.  Bush was not the best debater, but he was able to listen to critisism of his weaknesses and improve.  Perry appeared in each debate like someone who was coached, not as someone who was speaking from his heart.  When Newt, Santorum, or Cain spoke, it appeared to be what they believed and felt.  In the case of Cain, he really lacked details and appeared to not think his plans through; however, they were his ideas.  Romney was clearly coached, but was polished.  The ideas may not have been his, but he understood them enough to speak well on them.  Perry appeared as though he was coached, memorized a few key lines and points, but was never prepared beyond remembering a few lines.  His forgetting the 3rd department he wants to cut is the perfect example.  If he really had knowledge of the details of the plan, and really understood the plan he was selling as his own, he would be able to name the departments, their functions, etc.  Instead, they were nothing but a bullet point he was to remember.  His poor debate performance to me signals that he is not an expert on Washington and not really to lead a government that he does not understand.

3.  His attempts to appease the fringe right.  On alot of issue, I am a member of the fringe right.  I’m 100% pro-life, pro-family, and I support cuts to social security, medicare, medicaid, and cuts to most federal agencies.  I support eliminating the department of education.  That said, I want a candidate with a broad appeal who is electable.  I have no problem, for example, with a candidate who wants to outlaw contraception.  However, if a candidate campaigns on that, he will likely lose.  Rick Perry –while not actually moving right– has campaigned lately in an attempt to win the support of many right-wing fringe groups.  Here are some example:

-Removing the deparment of Commerce.  A plan to do this would really need to be well thought out and detailed.  The Constitution requires a Census.  The Consitution requires that the federal government regulate interstate and foriegn commerce.  The Department of Commerce has needed functions, such as conducting the Census, regulating broadcast spectrum (used for for cell phones, tv, internet, military, hospital, etc).  Without spectrum regulations, folks could broadcast signals that interact with pacemakers or other medical equiptment and kill people (and if states could regulate spectrum, cell phones and medical devices would not work accross state lines).  Commerce does a number of tasks required by the Consitution and necessary for our country.  His proposals to eliminate it appear extreme to the public and make him less electable.  Frankly, they also appear stupid to me.

-Attacking public employees.    27% of Virginia workers work for federal, state, or local government.  The highest of any state but Alaska.  The reason why Gore lost to Bush is because Gore refused to pander to the issue of Coal in West Virginia.  He lost West Virginia, and thus the election.  Virginia is likely the swing state that will determine the 2012 election.  In Northern Virginia hundreds of thousands of federal employees live.  Tens of thousands more live in Norfolk.  These voters lean conservative and voted for Bob McDonnell.  However, they are swing voters.  Typically, federal employees vote Republican in Virginia.  Largely because they are typically folks who work for the Department of Defense, or in a security-related job.  Many come into government because of 9-11.  That said, these voters are people.  People do not like being attacked.  People also do not like salary freezes, or people who apply for the job of their boss on the plateform of laying them off or cutting their pay.  Perry, along with Romney, will have a very, very hard time winning Virginia and thus winning the election.

-Proposing a part-time citizen congress.  The consitution requires that congress pass a budget…something that Congress already cannot do.  Congress already is in campaign mode all the time.  If Congress were ‘part-time,’ then the president would spend 1/2 the time attacking “do nothing” congress.  The problem with 1/2 the pay and congress allowed to get a new part-time job (and Perry’s plan has it) is that Congressmen would get very high paying part-time jobs by those who want to influence congress and it would become legal for them to buy their own congressman.  A company could offer a Senator $1 million a year for a part-time job, and under Perry’s plan that would be legal.  The company would then make that money back in influence and pork.  Stupid plan.

-Slash Congressional Staff budgets.  This is another stupid plan that is just pandering.  Congressional staff are needed so that Congress can fulfil its job under the Consitution.  Congress is required to provide oversight, pass laws, pass budgets, etc.  How in the world can we live in a democracy when there is not an informed congress?  Congressional staff are needed if we plan to estimate the cost of various proposals (CBO), and the congressional agency GAO (as pointed out by Coburn), saves the government like $100 for each dollar it costs.  What we need is more congressional oversight, not less.

-End life-time judicial appointments.  Once again this is another plan that sounds good to some conservatives, but loses elections.  A president comes in and wants the authority to appoint alot of new judges.  FDR tried this and lost even with huge house and senate majorities.  Court packing looks bad.

- I could go on, but for the sake of length will just say that Perry has a lot of ideas and policy plans that sound good to some in the right, but that are national election losers — big time.

4.  He has failed to connect with me.  I supported him at first, but was turned off somewhat on his heartless comment.  I do not support in-state tuition for illegals, and I am not heartless.  His language towards groups has a with him or against him attitude, and I’m not always with him.  Plan to cut 3 agencies, but not remembering their names is what is heartless.  If you plan to layoff thousands of people, you owe it to them to atleast know what their job is, and what the name of their department is.  He campaigns on making cuts — and I agree that we need to make substancial cuts to the federal government and eliminate thousands of jobs in government — however, he does so without understanding the departments, and without detailing what cuts will be true cuts, and what will be moved to another department.  He comes across as someone who is trying to play doctor.  When Gingrich proposes cuts, he appears to understand what he is talking about.  His hundreds of billions in cuts are supported by analysis, reports, studies, and actual thought.  Much different from Perry’s broad cuts that do not appear anything more than political moves that would be horrible policy if implemented.

So, in conclusion, Perry is not the ideal candidate for me.  In his campaign he has failed to win the hearts and minds of the GOP.  Moving from 1st place to back of the pack.  There is nothing that leads me to believe that if he somehow gets elected that he can win the hearts and minds of the country. Had he not declared or run for President until today, I would be looking at him as a possible supporter.  His campaign thus far has moved me from someone leaning towards him, to someone who prefers several other candidates above him.  If he cannot win over a conservative like myself, and he has lost the support of (according to polls) of 80% of his initial supporters, what are the chances that he can re-gain our support, or the support of others in the time remaining?   This is not his year in my opion, but that is not to say that I would not consider him again 8 years from now.

    For starters: http://caucuses.desmoinesregister.com/data/iowa-caucus/compare-candidates/

Why have Gingrich (your pick), Romney and Bachmann failed to answer policy positions. Rick Perry has answered all of them.

You leaned towards Perry because you saw him as genuine…a quality that I have yet to see in other candidates with the exception of Paul (who I do not agree with on foreign affairs) and Huntsman. So…what is it we want in our president…first and foremost…we want THE TRUTH. We haven’t gotten much of that lately from Obama and Gingrich and Romney have been very good at spinning their policies.

(Your quote) We need someone in Washington who knows how to do the job???
Our problem IS jobs…revenue from the private sector into the government coffers. Who…please tell me has outperformed both Bush and Obama…Oh…that’s right…the one that doesn’t know how to do the job. Tort reform…do you think…just maybe that this should be an issue with high insurance rates and gum-ups in the judicial system? Oh..but under Perry’s leadership…TX got tort reform. Who else running has experience with the border? We do have a border problem. Who else is CIC of their national guard…Perry. Those men are currently serving in the War on Terror. But…what the hey…he must not know anything about that either. His uproot and overhaul…well…how do you like that insider trading business…Do you think Congress should be in jail…you and I would be. But…Perry doesn’t know what he is talking about. Washington, DC is CORRUPT. There is not a better word to describe it.

I believe that the Census Bureau was moved into the Executive Branch … so what is it about Commerce that we need (important word) NEED?

Forget Perry attacking public employees…I WILL. Public employees should be kept to a minimum. Do you know why…because they are taxes. That’s right…their salaries are taxes to the American people and right now…we don’t need anymore.

Apparently you prefer the more “polished” approach. The one that seems to have all the answers. But…what if the answers are falsehoods? What good are they but empty promises…or to put it more bluntly…more of Obama’s Hope and Change.

Concerning his right learning turn. There is no turn. The man is a solid Conservative. He not only believes in the tenants of God and Country….He lives them.

Today, December 1st you have two people who appear to be running ahead…Romney who I have caught lying in the debates and Gingrich, who proclaimed himself to be the nominee before we even had a chance to give our input.

America…You have a shot at the real deal. Yeh…debates aren’t his specialty…but then again…ALL the things America needs to be great again…ARE. Who is that guy that believes in God and Country…oh…that’s right Governor Perry…the one that not only has the experience but has put it into action.

Public employees are a double edged sword. You want a secure border and a strong national defense? Well, guess what. That is going to require hiring more public employees.

      • chrysostom15

What I do not support is the way Perry is campaigning. I support how he governed in regards to public employees. However, if he is to win the general election, he needs to get their votes.

There is much good about Perry, which is why I strongly considered him.

    • onemovoter

However much of what you posted where you claimed that he didn’t know what he is talking about in reforming/doing away with parts of the federal government, is wrong on several levels.

I myself have worked in several levels of government and the military. I’ve seen all sides. I’ve read Perry’s detailed plans. Some of it will be difficult to do but not impossible. The details though do line up with what I know on how much of the government runs and is organized. It read as if someone from the inside who knew what needs to be fixed wrote the plans.

I would suggest, if you want to take the time, to actually research your beliefs on what you think you know of Perry. I found quite a few points where you had the wrong stance or info. The departments that he wants to do away with are recent inventions of the late 70′s. Many of the functions of the Education, Energy and commerce can be rolled into other departments that originally did them.

The liberal audience of Leno tonight reacted with loud applause at a part time congress idea. Many of the other ideas he has come out with, like his energy/jobs plan is popular across the majority.

I understand on a personal level you just don’t have appeal to Perry because of certain things said. That is the same with the rest of the marginally attention paying herd.

I watched Luntz on Hannity recently with “wives and mothers of Iowa”. They said they were paying attention and had researched the candidates. Then they rattled off many of the things they were looking for in a candidate. After what I heard from them, I waited to see who they were leaning to. Most were leaning to Newt, with some for Santorum or Bachmann. However, their list of what they wanted pointed towards Perry.

This just goes to show that even though people say they have researched all of the candidates, they actually haven’t and have incorrect info. Most just go along with the herd. I don’t.

Plus, I don’t want to be associated with idiot, Beltway RINOS like you.

    • daveoconnor

at your peril chrys. You idiot! You Beltway RINO! Imagine if the “be respectful” rule wasn’t in place? Whew!
On a serious note I am amused at some Perry supporters invective since the governor seems like a perfect gentleman. I wonder how he would comment on your diary?

      • Tbone

Perry would probably think it was written by some Beltway bureaucrat who has been getting a snout full at the public trough for years.

        • daveoconnor

Okay! You smooth talker. I’m on board.

          • Tbone

          • chrysostom15

I support cutting every federal agency to 1992 funding levels plus inflation. That would balance the budget, and start to pay down the debt. Eventually that would allow money for money tax cuts. If that is not a fiscal conservative, what is?

I support an position-by-position review of each federal job to look to see which are overpaid and to cut the salary for overpaid positions. If that is not conservative, what is?

I support a ban on abortions in all cases, including rape, incest, and even life of the mother. Can’t get much further to the right on that.

I support outlawing homosexual acts, and believe marriage is between a man and a woman. Can’t get much more conservative.

The only federal agency that I actually support getting more funding is GAO, simply because that agency’s job is to find areas to cut in other agencies and it returns like $100 for every dollar spent. See Coburn’s report.

That said, I also support candidate who can actually get stuff done and win.

          • Tbone

to support a candidate that doesn’t.

            Got it.

    • federalfarmer1

I’ll say nice this about Rick Perry all day and clap and smile as you call Newt Gingrich supporters rinos! What do you say pal?

      • Tbone

Otherwise, you can hang with the idiots that were fooled by Cain, the optimists that think fat Newt isn’t going to die of old age or heart failure before this election or the next one, or the Romney RINOs.

    1. He knows about Washington, somebody has to do something to quell it. An insider is in the club.

    2. He’s a great debater. His points are solid. I’m not interested in hiring a salesman.

    3. Ummm..and 3, uhh, dang…

    4. Commerce… sure. Reducing Government is the name of the game.

    5. Government Employee Unions… that is a conflict of interests.
I can’t ever remember meeting a Government Employee who didn’t have a benefit package that would choke a horse, was underpaid, or as near as I could ever tell, overworked.

    6. Part time Congress.. that would help limit the damage, and force them hopefully on important work.

    7. Congressional staffs… generally off the radar.. but they have armies. Less people on the Overhead side of the balance sheet, please… and ALL Government is overhead expense.

    8. Court packing is the status quo and the very reason to terminate lifetime appointments. Maybe we should have them confirmed by Congress but they do not get to sit until after the following administration replaces the sitting one.. as in Bush’s picks would sit whwhen Barak took over, and Baraks picks would sit in the next one..

    9. Since the Federal Government will not allow deportation, and will not enforce or defend the border, of course, granting resident rates to those who live there is just plain nuts. Perry should hop on his horse, ride out and string them up. That oughta fix it.
Since about 1/3 of the population in Texas is of Hispanic heritage.. I am sure he ran on just that very point.

    Aw.. just having fun here.

I know his record, and what he stands for. He can do the job. He knows that not all his proposals would be accepted, but he at least will do what he says and says what he means. The buck truly stops with him. He does not try and put the blame for something on someone else. He is a truly honorable man who loves his country. He supports the military, Israel, and is a defense hawk. He will NOT bow to foreign leaders. I have voted for him 3 times and will again. I am Republican and my spouse is Democrat. My spouse will vote for Perry again too.

  • Wayne

propaganda, not a genuine personal opinion generated by an individual’s well researched effort to identify why they should no longer support Perry. And, was not convincing.

I’m still for a Perry/Newt ticker for the reasons I’ve posted before.

Perry represents the core conservative values that he has displayed from day one. There isn’t a Republican Party sanctioned candidate that does’t have contradictions when examining a career in politics. Perry has consistently show his core values and the angst of compromise in the political arena.

I remain firmly behind Perry! Enough said!

  • chrysostom15

I felt a need to explain why I do not support Perry because he started as looking so good. His campaign has not meet my expectations.

Sadly, the folks posting in support of Perry have made me more firm in my decision not to support him; not less. Perhaps one of his biggest problems may be his supporters and campaign.

Calling people a RINO is not an effective way to reach out.

The line that public employees are taxes is simply not true. Social security, Medicare, medicaid, defense contracting, state grants, interest on the debt, foreign aid, and other spending is the vast bulk of federal spending.

If we cut 100% of all non-defense discretionary spending, we would still have a large budget deficit each year.

If we do not elect a Republican, spending will rise substantially. What we need is to elect someone who can negotiate the best deal with Democrats. We cannot afford 4 more years of Obama, and cannot afford 4 years of someone who will not cut a deal with Democrats in order to pass entitlement reform..

  • dandolo

    to not support Perry.

He may be proposing radical ideas, but if we cannot move the country off the path we are on, forget it and just reelect Obama.

The time to take bold action is now when people see every day how failed socialist policies are. We are spending more than we ever have as a nation in history and the government is seizing more power than ever before. Frankly, I am hoping and praying that Perry does get in because he is the only one I have any faith in so far as putting some of the executive branch denizens currently in power in prison down the road.

    • tjms

Amen!!! I agree with the Gov.. now is not a time for pastels it is time for a bold color. He is a great governor and I am all too happy for him to just continue being our gov., after last night I see he is still the only one, other than Ron Paul, who is a BIG states rights advocate. We are doing very well here in TX but unless there is a states rights president it could change drasticallly.

  • constitutional

    LOL.
