Senator Lugar is key to the GOP winning back the Senate

I’ve heard the critisism that Lugar is not perfect.  That is true.  While Lugar is more conservative than McCain, Brown, Snow, Collins and many other Senate Republicans, there are some times when Lugar does not vote exactly and perfectly down the tea-party line.  Lugar voted for the bridget to nowwhere — the same funding that Palin asked for and kept.  Lugar voted for the same earmarks that the vast majority of the GOP voted for and supported.  Lugar may be pro-life, he may have voted for all the Bush tax cuts, he may have voted to support our troops, and may be a consistant conservative, — but there are instances where he voted along with the vast majority of the Senate — rather than with Coburn.

That said, Mourdock — who is running against Lugar for the GOP nomination — is a far weaker candidate.  Obama will put Indiana in play and the Senate race will be close.  Polling data shows that Lugar is a sure-thing win to keep the Senate seat.  Mourdock, would require a fight to have a chance to win.  Lugar has 4 million in the bank; Mourdock 400k.  Should Mourdock win, he would need funding diverted from other races to help him compete.   Mourdock’s win would hurt the GOP effort to win the Senate, and would also be a worse person to run along side the GOP nominee.

Tea party purists should turn their focus on defeating Snow.  Snow is a consistant left-of-center vote.  She voted AGAINST the 2001 Bush tax cuts.  She voted for gays serving in the military.  She voted to support Roe v Wade.  Snow is the liberal the GOP should purge.  If the GOP wants to clean house, Brown would be another good target.  He voted for Romneycare, and is a consistant liberal voice and vote in the Senate.  He is a liberal democrat on almost every issue.  For some stupid reason, conservatives have given brown millions and millions of dollars. Brown has over 12 million in cash on-hand.  Money wasted defending a liberal, money that could be spent to help real conservatives win.

…a lesson we’re about to learn versus Obama, but I digress…

Please identify a conservative who can defeat Brown or Snowe in the primary AND win in November and I’m sure you’d find lots of willing conservatives who would back this person. Right now, nobody’s remotely on the horizon.

Lugar – I’m not an expert on Indiana, but recent articles at RedState indicate that he is out of step with Indiana and that there are credible alternative candidates.

Or a moderate Republican with ties to the D.C. insiders.

Indiana is the State next door to me .. and I’m sure there’s Red State folk who post from there.

In my opinion, the Dems leftward lurch has left Indiana a tad confused … but much more open to the GOP *if* they can find good leadership like Mourdock.

Obama does not put Indiana into play .. he may put Gary, IN into play but that’s not ever been the whole State…. and a good GOP candidate can win.

Further, an outstanding Senate candidate such as Mourdock can create inverse coattails and help a weak POTUS candidate …

        lugar is obama’s favorite senator.

He may have represented Indiana way back when, but lately he represents the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mourdock is a credible candidate, and I certainly hope he wins.

That was in 1997, and Lugar’s only grown his RINO horn since then. I’d rather take my chances with Mourdock than have a safe seat with that annoying RINO in it.

and richard mourdock is a principled conservative.

“I’d rather take my chances with Mourdock than have a safe seat with that annoying RINO in it.” Really? You would rather risk control of the Senate in the name of some purist philosophy from a do-nothing like Mourdock?

Any conservative primary strategy has to start with the states that lean Republican, then go to the states that lean Democrat.

Utah and Florida last time. Utah and Indiana this time.

Where Snowe, for heaven’s sake spell her name right if you are going to criticize her, is probably the best we can hope for in Maine, Lugar can be replaced with a better Senator.

“I?ve heard the critisism that Lugar is not perfect. That is true.”

Your diary went downhill from there …

” there are some times when Lugar does not vote exactly and perfectly down the tea-party line.”

Understatement of the year. Apparently, the best you can do it say “hey look there are a few RINOs worse than Lugar.” Except ALL of them are in blue states. Lugar is not. If Pennslyvania can elect Toomey, and Kentucky rand Paul, we can do better than Lugar in Indiana.

He has been an absolute ZERO on any and all conservative issues. Lugar the RINO needs to retire, or be retired.

Can someone please explain to me what Mourdock has ever done? He is the treasurer of Indiana and as far as I know, his biggest accomplishment was losing $300 million in business tax receipts. This guy is a joke. Alleged conservatives are all goo-goo-ga-ga over him because he says the right things. Mourdock is the equivalent of Obama, only the opposite way from liberalism: all words and no or bad actions.
I believe the voters of Indiana are smart enough to reject this joke.
And I am quite tired of people calling a fellow Republican a RINO because they don’t happen to pass someone’s little litmus test and should, God forbid, compromise on an issue once in a while. Everyone talks about how much they love the Constitution. Guess what? The Constitution was designed to come to decisions of national importance through compromise. Its the damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead ultra-conservatives in the GOP who will ruin any chance of Republicans retaining the House and/or winning the Senate and White House. Really? Mourdock against Donnelly? That would be a recipe for a Democratic gain. But then, the people who want to purge the party of alleged RINOs don’t really care. They have their own agenda that will ruin the party.

Josh Mandel in neighboring Ohio is a bigger rube than Mourdock. You can’t tell me in a state with Ohio’s population there is not a better politician to take on Sherrod Brown than Mandel, the former Gore supporter with family ties to liberal candidates nationwide.
