MEMBER DIARY

A modest proposal regarding screen names

A new plague has been descending upon RedState as the primary season becomes more serious. No, I’m not talking about the quadrennial invasion of the luaP noR locusts looking for fresh foliage.

Rather, its the entrance of the folks with the following screen names:

[candidate's name]4prez (or variations on the theme)

I seem to recall we earlier had the Sarah Palin variant, who was eventually escorted out the door. But hydra-like, we now have two more heads in the house, as evidenced by the thread to his post being thrown into chaos by the entrance of one of these folks:

http://www.redstate.com/streiff/2011/08/31/dana-milbank-perry-is-not-a-libertarian/#comment-9515

And then there’s the posts and comments by his rival

http://www.redstate.com/romney4prez/

Now certainly from my perspective, these folks do more damage to their opponent by their political equivalent of “friendly fire” that ten of their political opponents are able to inflict – as much by their cring-inducing defense of their candidate as by their over-the-top attacks on others.

Which might be viewed as just deserts, except that the candidates don’t deserve such treatment.

Worse, these exchanges distract from serious discussion of the strengths and weakness of the various candidates – not just distraction, but at times approaching fratricide. Meanwhile, the assessment of the candidates’ effectiveness against their Democratic opponents gets eclipsed.

And even worse still, conservatives/Republicans get needlessly pushed into shouting matches against each other, weakening our common resolve.

Consequently, the quality of discourse at RedState declines, and folks dropping by recoil at the level of conversation that they see.

So what then is my modest proposal? Simply this

When [candidate]4prez (or variants, including “senate” or “house” or “gov”) come into the view,

shoot first and ask questions later (metaphorically speaking).

Ah, the relief…

COMMENTS

is that they identify the quality of the diary or comment that you are about to read. It’s not the screen name. It is the person behind the screen name. Some times they get under your skin so badly, you start firing back, and the disintegration begins. I am guilty. If we just checked the name of the diarist before even clicking on the diary, and ignored their entries, they would eventually stop from inattention and inaction, because no matter how inciteful or incindiary their constant attacks on other candidates are, and no matter how the diaries contain no links, no proof of what they are saying, with Romney4pres, over and over again, they will never be controlled in any way here at RS, other than the members/readers giving them the cold shoulder they deserve. Wasn’t there some sort of diary posted a few months ago providing proper protocal for supporting/ not supporting particular candidates? This really really needs to stop.

last night, succumbed to the attack by shooting back and woke up this morning with writer’s remorse and wishing I could delete my comments.

It was late, I was tired and the attack was so sudden that I actually mistook perry4prez for romney4prez. He sounded so much like r4prez who many of us went round and round with earlier in the day that I exploded in anger and said things I regret.

Some posters, though, relish in trying to play one-upsmanship and are so irritating and rude that it is hard to ignore them.

Not sure what I would do with them if I were formally monitoring the site.

who wishes they could take some comments back, and you surely won’t be the last. As I said, they come off with crap that is so maddening, and frustrating and false, that you just strike back, which in the end gives their candidate more ink, and their diaries more attention that they feed off of.

Imagine if most, if not all, ignored these flaming diaries. They wouldn’t have any reason to post more flaming diaries. They would just move down the list ignored. The problem is that many of us, myself included, make the mistake of posting back, and allowing them to control the debate. We really need to get away from keeping these diaries alive by trying to fight back against the idiots. You hear me gekster?

shooting first is an entirely civil proposal. It’s really interesting that people who show up with a candidate’s name in their screen name do seem to be off-the-wall idiots.

As mbecker notes, there’s something about inserting a candidate’s name into your screen name that shreds the rational thought centers in one’s brain.

    • The_Gadfly

With a name like that, he’s an obvious moby, and needs to be staked to an anthill and covered in honey.

It is a shame to see so much vitriol spewed between ourselves. I guess it?s natural to try and defend your chosen candidate especially in the face of attacks some of which are far over the line. It must be remembered however that we are allies, even in the heat of our fiercest debates we must hold the line and demonstrate that restraint that allows us to re-join as one and support our eventual candidate. Even if that person is not our first choice, I am a Texan. As such I am an adamant supporter of our good governor. I have at times crossed the line myself, I will make this pledge here and I invite everyone to join me.

1.I will not make false accusations our repeat unsubstantiated claims.
2.I will not use another?s behavior as an excuse to use insults and character assassination in place of a reasoned, logical argument.
3.I will be respectful of others, especially those I disagree with the most.
4.I will support the eventual nominee, even if it?s Romney?. *LOL couldn?t help myself there?.*

    • perry4prez

Maybe the mods could introduce a feature that allows you to delete your posts for 10 minutes after posting like I’ve seen on other blogs.

      • The_Gadfly

If you fly off the handle and you know it, post the apology right after the comment. If posters can delete comments you can lose the flow of a thread.

  • westcoastpatriette

unless, of course, they insult me and assassinate my character first, then no-holds are barred.

Democrats played cyber-misdirection like a fiddle in 2008, dispatching their agents to disrupt and discourage Republicans’ online discusions. Only recently Democrats were telling us they were “really afraid of Huntsman.”

Democrats can’t game their losing message, so they are going to game the perception of electability of certain Republicans in the general election.

They think they know who they can beat, and they are out to goad Republicans into nominating such candidates.

  • perry4prez

I started posting here because I liked what Governor Perry had to say. That is why I picked my user name, everyone keeps saying that we should get MORE people involved from the grassroots so I would of thought people were OK with new posters joining in.

I had no idea usernanes would be so controversial. It’s an election year so why wouldn’t you get posters with candidate names in their usernames? Do any of you put bumper stickers on your car? It’s the same idea… Would people really feel better if I picked some cutesy username like “My2Dogs” or something like that?

As for romney4prez, I didn’t even know about him until yesterday.

    • http://www.gmsplace.com/ civil truth

The problem is not with the user names per se (in your caseperry4prez), but with the historically poor quality of postings by the folks who have taken on these names – and my exasperation at the toxic threads that these users have initiated, including the thread that you initiated at the above mentioned link (the first one).

I would hope that you would take to heart the thrust of my diary entry here, along with the comments from other veteran users, which is to temper your enthusiasm for Rick Perry with reasoned argument rather than engaging in strident argumentation that creates unnecessary dissension and ill-feelings.

The latter does not benefit your candidate of choice and only damages your credibility going forward.

Your entrance to RedState has been most rocky, but good observation skills and a teachable spirit may enable you yet to understand the mores of RedState society and find your place in it.

    • papabear

It is the “friendly” fire caused by unthinking advocacy. The effects are destructive enough that many of us suspect that one of the xxxxxx4prez is a (D) plant.

Do you want to contribute to that atmosphere?

Q: “How many radical feminists does it take to change a light bulb?”

        A; “That’s not funny.”

Plus more people will read my posts that way LOL.

I also don’t leave my back door standing open or put out cans of spraypaint on Halloween.

In the corner of the Chicago metropolitan area that I work in, there are plenty of union goons who would be happy to damage my car – enough that I have to pay to get it repaired, but not enough that it’d exceed my insurance deductible – if it has a sticker that reflects my beliefs…

Now, you can make the case that I’m not doing enough to support local businesses – the body shop, the mechanic, the tire guy – but I’d rather support local candidates for office instead.

As for why I’m acat, that’s simple. What I support should be clear in my writing, who I am should not get in the way.

Is the only bumper sticker I allow on my SUV here in Europe. My daughter frowns whenever I drive over to France in my cowboy hat to visit, but the Swiss just love it.

    • The_Gadfly

go into the selection of a screen name. They aren’t the sort of thing you change like underwear. If you are really going to be active in the political debate for the next 10 years, do you still want to be perryprez then? I will be as comfortable being The_Gadfly 10 years from now as I was when I took it when I signed on here (okay, technically I was “The Gadfly” and the “_” appeared during a board upgrade, but I was cool with it and there was no loss of continuity).

I do accept and respect the name changes where someone gave up a handle for their real name. Even though I do still have to remind myself who they are sometimes.

      • perry4prez

@gadfly, I have no plans to be a commentator for 10 years, I do not live in DC and am not a professional pundit. I just want this country to make it through the next 10 months and to elect a strong Constitutional conservative who can fix the fiscal and moral disaster that is the Obama presidency.

        • The_Gadfly

          not the solution.

We didn’t get here in 4 years, or 12 years, or even 20 years. It has taken somewhere between 100 and 150 years to build the leviathan in DC. The next 10 years are the minimum commitment you need to make if we are to turn this country around. Ten months is the sort of blink of an eye that both Progressives and Jihadists count on us uneducated/heathens to think of as a long time.

but to be honest, I rarely look at a screen name. It’s the content that either holds my attention or bores the socks off my feet….

The great thing about this form of education, is that you can turn crap off at will, just like the T.V.

In the meantime, I look for meaning dialogue between thoughtful, civil people.

I almost got bullied off this site once, it won’t happened twice…

    Moving on….
