MEMBER DIARY

Liberals Drunken Joy Ride and America’s Moment of Clarity

Good government is like a good boyfriend/girlfriend, good acting, good management, even good clowning – it’s easy to take for granted… unless you’ve had the bad version.  If your head is full of goo- goo fantasies, reality has trouble competing. Sometimes trial and error is neccessary. The sexy James Dean type who sits in front of you in history class might prove a distraction until you actually go out with him and find out his biggest ambition is to go to Amsterdam for the Hemp fest, or he’s a flake, or generally just not as interesting as he seemed – and then you discover you kinda prefer the other guy who doesn’t provoke the same envy from your friends but who actually calls when he says, doesn’t have vague commitment issues, has more in common with you, gets your humor, whatever…

Not that every guy that looks like James Dean is a loser or every girl is superficial &  obviously some people make good decisions the first time but with the rest of us…oftentimes, there’s a big difference between what SEEMS like it’d be fun, exciting, compassionate, fulfilling, or stimulating and what actually IS. The legitimate functions of government sound kind of boring to the untrained ear - protection from crime, national defense, protection of citizens rights, staying out of our way – there’s none of the grandeur of  liberal dreams: wiping out poverty, banishing disease, ending war and creating eternal peace “not just peace in our time, but peace for all time.”

So a majority of  Americans have chosen (figuratively speaking) the sexy James Dean type, the guy who made wild romantic promises of liberal utopia and whispered sweet nothings like ” tax cuts”, “racial healing”, “free money”, “free stuff”, ”no more war”, “no more partisanship”, “perfect harmony and bliss” the rest of us looked on horrified and tried to warn our (collective) friend  “what do you see in him?! He breaks his promises, lies to you… his best  friends are all radicals, communists and terrorists. I mean – HELLO?”  - but they weren’t ready to hear it. Now all Democrats partisan dreams have come true; they’ve got the Presidency and a numerically unassailable Congressional majority, they started out with tons of idealism and good will but – like a spoiled brat who was set up in a penthouse with plenty of daddy’s money, all the right connections and had success all but handed to him on a silver platter but couldn’t acheive it because he went for a drunken joy ride, crashed his daddy’s Porsche, blamed the other guy, and now wants the keys again – liberals have squandered their political capital and are quickly losing credibility. The question is have they lost enough? Not yet. Not as Obama’s numbers creep up backwards 50%.  America has had a moment of clarity – but will it sink in.  Will the overwhelming majority of us GET IT  – meaning recognition that “liberalism” is deeply and inherently misguided and wrong?

Over the past 8 years Bush has made a lot of mistakes – but there’s also been a lot of things that were great. No terrorist attacks, outstanding progress in Iraq, a strong economy (prior to the Democrats taking Congress)  Why were all these things taken for granted?  Again, there are many reasons but I suspect it has a lot to do with having Republicans in power – either in the White House or in Congress – almost continuously from 1980-2008. A lot of folks didn’t realize the Democats were so far out in left field because (with the exception of  92-94) conservatives have kept them in check. For those of us in our 20′s and 30′s the “conservative interlude” is pretty much all we’ve ever known. “ Without knowing what came before – it’s easy not to recognize its contribution. Since Republicans were in power – the media can of course blame any problems on them – and suggest the fantasy that if only Democrats weren’t impeded from the good they want to do…

People appreciate the actual, realistic and appropriate accomplishments  of legitimate, effective  government when they’ve suffered the lack of it. One of my first thoughts about NYC after moving here in 2000 was ”these people are really into their mayor”. Practically couldn’t walk down the street without hearing a testimonial. It’d be like ” Hey, can you tell me how to get to Times Square?” “Go down to 8th Ave and take a left, but let me tell you – you would’nt have even wanted to go to Times Square before GIULIANI cleaned up the city”

I’m exaggerating, obviously, but there really was a lot of good will - cab drivers, the guys in the deli, people in my building, people I worked with couldn’t seemed to help telling me how happy they were with ol’ Rudy. Why such enthusiasm? Did he calm the oceans? Shower the city with neverending wealth? Stop “global warming”? Of course not. There may have been many reasons but mainly  ”You wouldn’t have wanted to live in pre-Giuliani New York”.

As a newbie, I didn’t have an opinion on how the city was run - I recognized that I could walk down the street without being mugged, raped or killed. I wasn’t surrounded by porn shops, prostitutes, pimps and drug addicts but I didn’t particularly occur to me to credit the mayor or even the police force. Those who had seen New York before the crime drop had a totally different perspective. They recognized that the negative accomplishment of not having a lot of crime – was really quite important. It wasn’t “just a bunch of negative rights”  it was life without the tyranny of crime ridden streets.

Here’s to hoping that Americans REALLY “get it” as in, get back to basics and many liberals seriously rethink a lot of wrong assumptions about the role of government.

Your discussion about the era between 1980-2008 is interesting. Especially how you note the people in their 20′s and 30′s have only experienced life under a semblance of that type of government, Republican. They have nothing to contrast it with. Add in the liberal schooling, from grade school on, and you have a population ripe for the MSM to blame the Rep. for everything and get away with it. Now, in the era of Obama and the leftist Dems, they will have a chance to learn, (unfortunately). Nothing like a little compare and contrast.

I think the people would be quite open to a conservative message, if the message was ever strongly and consistently delivered.

    Nice diary.

is that the left has gone from “true communism has never been tried” to actually embracing tyrants like Castro. It’s one thing to think that – in theory- some form of socialism could work (though I don’t know why anyone would) quite another to point to an impoverished, tyrannized nation and proclaim that it’s working. I would hope that remarks like Diane Watson’s are waking people up – but they don’t seem to be reported much in the MSM.

But I have friends – who don’t even describe themselves as liberal – who are like ” is communism neccessarily a bad thing?” (PROLONGED SCREAM) I think I’m going to have to do some research and write something up for my left leaning friends explaining that YES. Communism IS ALWAYS and INHERENTLY a bad thing.

I’m optimistic that Americans go beyond just swinging back to the GOP (though that of course is a desirable first step) and really re-examine how they’ve been thinking about government. Maybe meditate on the Constitution and fall in love with LIBERTY as an ideal rather than this communist nonsense.

with young liberals and it is so painfully obvious that they didn’t live through the Carter years. I remember clearly the surge of optimism and sigh of relief from my parents and the nation when Reagan was elected. And Carter wasn’t as far left as Obama.

“you don’t know what you’ve got ’til its gone” is not entirely true. Our country and culture are very resilient. But I fear the cost of giving these nitwits an extended turn behind the wheel. I particularly like the “conservative interlude”. It sure beats the “liberal quaaludes” were getting now!

Pretty sure the sheep that the American people have become will go right along.

wait, what happened during the Carter years? hmmmmmm.
Oh yeah, we gained permanent peace in Israel.
    Independence from foreign oil.
Cardigan sweaters came back in style.
    Reagan defeated his reelection bid.
    Yep, great years.

2012, the next defeat Reagan victory.

Either yours, or friends of yours…

Or to put it another way, when you kiss a frog in the real world, the chances of it turning into a prince are, shall we say…rather thin.

In the case of the last election, too many of our fellow citizens went to bed with the slick guy they thought was a prince, and as they awaken the next morning, they’re starting to realize that what’s in the bed next to them is a frog. Or at least some are – too many still prefer to believe that the guy will still fulfill all their fantasies despite the evidence next to them. And some who are starting to see reality are willing to be sweet-talked back into their fantasy world – or let the media cast a spell over them again.

Hard to know how this will all turn out, but reality has a way of coming out in the end, though the price paid by its denier can be very high, even the price of their life and those around them – or even the fall of a mighty nation, (Remember “handwriting on the wall”?)

the harder it is to admit it’s a fake! Somebody raised that point with regard to prominent so-called conservatives who supported Obama, but I think it can be applied to the whole continuum. I think Americans will swing back to being more conservative it’s just a matter of how much damage is done first. Obviously some will find it harder to give up supporting Obama than others.

I’d separate the Democratic base into 3 groups:

HARDENED HARD CORE SUPPORTERS: The folks who were ripping out McCain/Palin signs and probably thought Jeremiah Wright, Frank Marshall Davis, and William Ayers were plusses. The only way Obama could lose the hammer and sickle crowd is by actually governing as a centrist. They didn’t need to be deceived by Obama, they’re confirmed leftists or just obsessed by the idea of a black president. But I do think they’ll be less active without any anti- Bush fervor to motivate them and they seem to be wasting their energy boycotting Glenn Beck and Whole Foods.

HONEST, DEDICATED TRUE BELIEVERS: The folks who were with him, working hard since primary season. They probably fell in love with the myth of Obama – but are still probably pretty far left on their own. Still, not all of them live within the confines of an all-Democrat echo chamber and their left leaning views may not be deeply entrenched. I expect this group is a big chunk of the 29% who still strongly approve. They’ll probably mostly still approve -but some may become disillusioned. They’re liberals, but honest liberals.

REALLY WANTED OBAMA BUT DIDN’T ACTIVELY INVEST; I know members of this group that are already fed up with Obama despite self describing as liberals. It may seem unlikely that they’d vote Republican — but people are not always ideologically consistent. One “liberal” friend I know thinks health insurance is a right but once ranted to me about progressive tax hikes and how she was at a job and her boss kept pushing her to make more sales but she did the math and realized that if she sold much more it would put her in a different tax bracket & most of her hard earned extra money would just go to the government,

Then There’s THE HILLARY SUPPORTERS WHO VOTED FOR OBAMA TO HAVE A DEMOCRAT:

A lot of this group had some real concerns about Obama – which are likely to get worse. I expect they’d support a Democrat challenger if they had one- & would not vote Republican easily but could conceivably do it. My mom is in this boat. She voted for Reagan and seriously considered McCain.

There’s differing levels of support for Obama in this group. Some transferred their support pretty much automatically – others didn’t come on board till much later in the season. There was so real and very legitimate angetr at how the Democrats run their primary. Even if still technically Democrat – many don’t recognize their party and if Republicans have a persuasive message…I think even some life long Democrats might consider switching parties.

Then obviously there are the SWING VOTERS:

After Sarah Palin was named, McCain Palin at one point had a 10 point lead among likely voters. When Obama’s approval rating hit 45% it appeared those voters had swung back. This group is (obviously) likely to vascillate and there’s a lot of selfish reasons for wanting to be ok with the President. For one thing, it takes a lot less energy. (As I’m sure RedStaters can fully appreciate) I expect there’s some guilt among this group seeing what they thrust on the country and of course nobody likes to admit they’ve been deceived. So, one could arguably say this group has more psychologically invested than any other. Still, I expect they’ll swing right.

Obviously independents and moderates are a huge and diverse group, but I think a lot of them dislike corruption and abuse of power pretty acutely. Some may vote Republican in 2010 just to balance things out as someone who self described as independent for years – I’d look at character. I didn’t like that the Democrats showed no backbone against Bush until it was popular to oppose him. I started self describing as a Republican (rather than a McCain independent) only after I saw that the GOP was capable of standing on principle and showing some backbone against Obama.

Obviously these are huge generalizations, but my impression is the vast majority of citizens are open to a more conservative message – even if it wouldn’t seem so.

The Dems mistook an American people following historical precedent with the Dems as the default choice, not realizing that the Dems had gone off the deep end. The Dems overreached, and now
