“Hell, NO!”

Enough! Caving in to gun control is a huge mistake.

Following the gruesome massacre of school children in Connecticut, news stories have shared a common theme – that gun owners are now “ready to compromise” on guns. Unfortunately, too many of those on “our side” seem intimidated by the media, and unwilling to fight back. But they are making a huge mistake, both in terms of public safety, and our freedoms.

Anyone who understands anything at all about violent crime knows that no “assault weapons” ban or restriction on “high-capacity magazines” is going to save a single life or reduce crime in any way. This is not a matter of opinion – we now have decades of data, from the Federal ban and our “laboratories of gun control” (the States with extreme restrictions on lawful gun owners). And the results are clear and unmistakable – gun control actually increases the probability that one will be the victim of a violent crime. (See: Chicago, Detroit, Washington D.C., or Los Angeles).

Ditto the imaginary “gun show loophole” – the bogus claim that felons and other prohibited people can just walk into a gun show and buy a gun from an “unlicensed dealer.” But research shows that felons DON’T GO TO GUN SHOWS, at least not in any measurable numbers. They buy their guns from the black market almost exclusively.

The Force Science Research Institute at the University of Minnesota (Mankato State) reported on a 5-year nationwide study by the FBI of over 800 incidents involving the most dangerous armed street criminals, and concluded: “Contrary to media-generated myth, not a single weapon in the study was purchased at a gun show.” But, hey, why listen to the FBI?

In reality, the “gun show loophole” is a “Trojan Horse,” since an “unlicensed dealer” is ANY private citizen who sells a gun, including you and me. The real purpose behind this scheme is to mandate a “background check” on every private sale. Note that this will likely require going to a gun store and paying a fee (no gun store is going to do it free of charge, especially for a gun they didn’t sell you!).

This latest bit of bureaucratic nonsense will not prevent a single felon or mentally disturbed whacko from getting a gun – they will NOT subject themselves to any background check. It is simply a way to institute a “back-door” gun registration scheme. Besides, it is already a FELONY for anyone to sell a gun to a felon or a juvenile. Buying a gun on behalf of any prohibited person (the so-called “straw purchase”) is also a felony.

The other issue is the genuine threat to our liberty. The moment we give even the slightest concession to the gun control argument, we essentially agree with their position. But neither you nor I, nor any of the nation’s 90 Million gun owners, had anything to do with the Sandy Hook School shooting. Giving in is always interpreted as guilt.

Ironically, the gun issue could be a “hanging curve ball” to Republicans, just BEGGING to be knocked out of the park. All they would have to do is “grow a pair” and throw the entire issue back in the faces of Democrats: “Your ridiculous ‘gun free zones’ have failed! It’s time to do what’s necessary to protect our kids – not stripping lawful gun owners of their rights!” Americans would cheer.

Because in case you haven’t noticed, while the talking heads on TV are talking “reasonable restrictions” the American public is reacting by flocking to gun stores, buying up the very guns that the liberal Democrats are targeting – those evil “military style” carbines, many of them driving cars with “Obama2012″ stickers on them!

And these same people are going to vote in 2014…

The pressure to sound “reasonable” and “willing to compromise” is enormous. But my great grandfather was a powerhouse political figure at the turn of the 20th Century (the governor was at my mother’s wedding – and according to family lore, it was not a “request”), and he understood the realities of politics. He was once challenged by a “moderate” friend who asked him, “Mr. McGuire, you’re so intransigent – don’t you know that politics is the art of compromise?” My grandfather replied, “Bulls–t! Politics is the art of making the other son-of-a-bitch compromise!”

Instead of knuckling under to more gun control, we should all be taking the fight to the enemy. And that means every one of us MUST start by demanding that our legislators, whether Democrat or Republican, refuse to go along with ANY new gun laws.

Then demand that they begin repealing many of the 20,000 largely ineffective gun laws that we already have on the books. Because, sometimes, giving in is just wrong, and the only honorable answer is “no.”

Better yet, “Hell, NO!”

I have a post here coming up about what all gun owners in America can do to help.

    Here’s a hint about what I’m writing:

Make *sure* your guns are secured and accessible by only the people who need access to them. We need to enforce among ourselves a higher level of attention when it comes to keeping those weapons stored in a safe condition. We need to shift a little bit of attention to the home security side of keeping the weapons, and only we can do it: at gun shows, at dealerships, at every place someone buys a gun – including in private sales. This has to become a topic of conversation and self-enforced etiquette among gun owners. We have to reinforce that message.

We’ll sell more gun safes, and that’s a positive thing. Nobody who owns a gun wants to deal with the horror of having their weapons used in the way they were in Newtown, CT., and that’s a thing we all need to make an imperative of the culture.

Otherwise it’s going to be forced on us, and it will be a lot worse than that.

Anyone who goes to a shooting range knows the rules. They’re enforced while you’re on the firing line, in your booth, in competition. Among friends and fellow gun owners and among instructors. People do the same when they take their rifles out to shoot for sport or in competition. There is more to be done and we can take positive steps to make it a part of the culture – to keep the weapons secured more carefully.

The range culture is a safety culture. I know, because I spent three years in high school shooting rifles in competition – doing my homework between relays, talking with my friends, and generally doing everything we needed to do to make sure we were safe in what we were doing. Well, in a nation that has more gun owners than ever, we need to make sure that culture of safety is instilled everywhere someone owns a gun.

We have to take the steps to help create the conditions where fewer of these kinds of crimes can be committed, in addition to the ones we already have. Responsible gun owners need to step up, here, and make it into a priority.

Think about it carefully and make it your primary thought for the next month: what do I have to do to make sure I can use my guns if I need them, but they’re also better secured than they are now? From theft, from “mentally unstable” people, and from people who shouldn’t have access to them because they are MY responsibility.

If you want to bring the rate of “Adam Lanza” type crimes down, you can’t just try to stop people like Adam Lanza once they have the guns. You also have to do everything you can to prevent them from having easy access to the weapons, and we can all do that in a way that doesn’t detract from our ability to use them if we’re smarter about it.

I agree. Proper handling and storage of guns is (or should be) a given. And as a firearm instructor for almost 40 years, I can attest that while most people are pretty good about taking care of their firearms, there will always be exceptions. What we must NOT do is let the anti-gun zealots convince the public that WE are somehow “collectively” responsible for the acts of individuals, whether an Adam Lanza or the dumbass who leaves his gun in the glovebox of his car.

Went to a local gun store Saturday. Learned that ALL AR-type rifles and apparently all M-14-type rifles (not to mention various types of handguns) are on deep back order. The threat of a ban has caused a buying frenzy. You couldn’t buy and carry away a new Bushmaster .223 today if your life depended on it; the dealers are sold out.

House Republicans need to fend off any weapons ban for as long as possible to allow law abiding citizens to arm themselves with the weapons they feel they need.

    Amen..

I’m tired of being treated like a damned criminal every time ONE GUY in a nation of 300+ million does something stupid.

When Progressives and their ilk speak so eloquently of ‘Compromise’, what is it that they are “giving up” ? What freedom [or part of one] do they surrender for all of the rest of our Republic’s recorded history?
Why, they are not even hinting at what ‘It’ their supposed end if this bargain might be, and are counting on the continual downward plunge in language comprehension & critical thinking that is so endemic in our culture [and has been for some time...].
They are counting on the masses who voted for Their Shining Light, despite reams upon reams of evidence telling them in stark, conclusive terms that no good end could come of what they [seemingly] endorsed.
Now, we are about to see Progressives test the waters once again, and we’ll see just how far they can push The Dialectic. Demonization, Dehumanization, Blatant Propaganda with no evidence in content, and out & out fear-mongering will become the Progressive Rule for some time to come. Not to mention shouting over Their
Opposition and the vile accompaniment that walks hand-in-hand with [supposed] Leftist Intellectualism.
This one is On Us my fellows [and 'fellowettes'... A-Hem....].
This is one we can ‘do right’ with no one to obfuscate, deflect us or blame.
No RINOs, No Neos, No Fence Straddlers. You know we have countless allies in this, as all you have to do is to look up the recent sales figures and attend a show or two.
Consider what can come of this, and be built upon to expand this once-again seen view and it’s actions.
Is it beyond the realm of possiblity that this could be ‘the start of sumthin’ big ‘?
    Well,… is it…?
