Today, the Arizona Republican Party is facing the same internal challenges as our party is across the nation, and a battle is being fought between grassroots conservatives and liberal elites over control of the party, its platform, and its bank accounts.
Here in Arizona, the conservatives are winning. But the elites, led by Senator John McCain, are organizing and recruiting from the left end of our party in an effort to retake control. We must not allow this!

I know for a fact that the C4L is all in on this, thinking that it will be their inroad to the Republican party. There will undoubtedly be Liberals who are wearing masks to also apply for those positions. How do you check on the applicants CW? Neil is right, we could suffer a setback, and identity theft, if the wrong people become those Committeeman.

I don’t know of anyone who is arguing that. He said that we live in an era of identity theft, mentioning that as yet another good reason to have documentation on file to prove constitutional eligibility for office.
How about articulating all the good reasons we should support McCain in this effort instead of exaggerating Hayworth’s quotes in a failed attempt to make him look like a nutcase? Good luck with finding all those good, conservative reasons, by the way.

ColdWarrior (Diary) Sunday, May 2nd at 6:44PM EDT (link)The Party is where the real ball game is played. Period. We conservatives have ceded the playing field to those moderates who have remained INSIDE the Party, in its voting ranks.
It’s a pure numbers game. If “our side” has more people in the Party than “their side,” our side wins the leadership elections. No different than the primary and general elections.
I can’t personally vet everyone. So, I go into “target rich environments” where the likelihood is that most in the audience are conservatives. Like Tea Parties. 9.12 groups. WeSurroundThem groups. Conservative Republican groups like the Republican Assemblies (which, I’ve learned, have members that are not precinct committeemen).
Online, I come to places like Redstate. Breitbart. Tea Party/9.12/WeSurroundThem web sites. TeamSarah.org. Etc.
My experience has been the “fired up” people in these groups are the hard corps conservatives who want to “do something” — they just don’t know what to do and the Party ain’t telling ‘em and neither are the incumbents (with rare exceptions).
C4L has supposedly been doing this, too. They haven’t had much success. As I’ve noted, some say trying to organize conservatives is like trying to herd cats — trying to organize libertarians is like trying to herd kittens.
Bottom line: if each and every conservative here on Redstate and in all of the various groups I’ve mentioned would actually leave their keyboards for a couple of hours a month and actually attend their local GOP committee meeting and put forth the little bit of effort to become a PC we could take over the Party in one month. If the PC slots are all filled, then attend anyway and be ready to take a slot when one comes open. Become a “PC helper.” Volunteer for some mundane task that needs to get done. All the while, learn “the ropes” — how your committee works.
How this all works is an “open secret.” The RINOs know about it just as we conservatives do. The real question is which of us are going to DO SOMETHING about it.
Yesterday I filled the two precinct committeeman slots allotted in one our “empty” precincts. Took less than an hour. Today I’ll try to achieve the same result in another. In these two precincts, the candidates only need to get THREE signatures to get on the ballot. One can be their own. So I targeted houses with two or more PCs. Vetted them by asking them to sign “the nomination papers for the CONSERVATIVE candidate for the U.S. Senate, J.D. Hayworth.” Found a couple who wanted to “do something.” Asked them if they were happy with the Party leadership and the candidates generally. They weren’t happy with either. Asked if they’d like to be able to vote for the leadership. Yup. Asked if they’d be willing to spend just a few minutes filling out a few forms and getting the signature of one more Republican they knew from their precinct, as that was all it would take to get them onto the ballot to run for the office of precinct committeeman, which would then allow them to vote for the leadership of the Party directly at the legislative district and county levels. They were completely unaware of how weak our party is and how split it is ideologically.
Well, they’ll be two more conservative votes and voices within the Party.
Pray. Recruit. Repeat.

J.D. was asked the "birth certificate" question tonight
ColdWarrior (Diary) Tuesday, May 4th at 3:11AM EDT (link)(May 3) at the North Phoenix Tea Party monthly meeting. I was allowed to speak for about two minutes on the subject of why Tea Partiers need to become precinct committeeman and was overjoyed when I asked for all the PCs to raise their hands and about 85 per cent of the hands went up.
I explained how easy it was to become a PC, using as props a nominating form (for the 10 or fewer signatures needed), the affidavit of qualification, and a precinct walking sheet, and further explaining that the Legislative District officers would help make sure that the paperwork was filled out correctly and would provide the walking sheets.
Our state and county CONSERVATIVE chairmen were there and I made the point that we conservatives needed to make sure that they were re-elected to their positions and that we could make that happen if everyone in the room who was not a PC would become one and that all those who already were PCs would recruit more conservatives to join us INSIDE the Party — because ONLY precinct committeemen get to elect the Party leaders.
J.D. handled the “birth certificate question” well during the Q & A after his approximately 35 minute stump speech, which was very good, in my humble opinion. The man is an accomplished speaker.
J.D. was pointedly asked by an elderly woman what he intended to do, if elected, on the issue of whether Obama is a “natural born citizen.” J.D. calmly, politely and patiently explained that the Electoral College has already determined that question and that he respected the questioner’s concerns and right to ask the question. J.D. further explained that that we must accept the fact that the 2008 election has come and gone, that the election results were certified, and that we must now unite to oppose the POLICIES of President Obama.
He received a thunderous round of applause.
Another questioner brought up a significant point about Sen. Kyl’s and McCain’s new “10 Point Plan” to secure the Arizona border — this “Plan” is just that — a plan; they have not actually turned it into a bill (confirmed by the questioner, who said he had called Sen. McCain’s office about it and the staffer could not confirm that the plan has actually been submitted to legislative counsel to turn it into a real, live piece of proposed legislation). The point being right now this vaunted Plan is just that — a plan — and nothing more — than a political posturing ploy.
I am hopeful all of the people I talked to tonight and to whom I distributed nominating forms and affidavits of qualifications will follow through and get their signatures and become elected precinct committeemen.
Tomorrow night I have the pleasure of speaking to a new Tea Party organization in Tempe. 23 days remain until the May 26 cut-off for submitting paperwork to get onto the August 24 primary election ballot.
