MEMBER DIARY

Why conservatives need to be IN the Party

I was one of the 18 (Hat tip to SeeingRedAZ):

GOP county board votes to endorse Montgomery in county attorney’s race

The Executive Guidance Committee of the Maricopa County Republican Committee voted Thursday night to endorse Bill Montgomery for Maricopa County Attorney over appointed incumbent Rick Romley and Chandler Mayor Boyd Dunn, a divorce lawyer. Montgomery is a former deputy county attorney.

The bylaws require 60% of the members voting in the affirmative. It was an 18 – 8 vote, with the chairman not voting and 3 abstentions.

Romley was appointed to his old post in mid-April by the Board of Supervisors for whom he had been working. The vacancy occurred when Andrew Thomas resigned to run for Arizona Attorney General.

Here’s the text of the endorsement resolution, which was offered by one of the conservative “at large” members elected to the Committee on Jan. 16 by all of the precinct committeemen who attended the Jan. 16 mandatory annual meeting.

RESOLUTION

Concerning the Maricopa County Attorney 2010 Republican Primary Election

Whereas, Bill Montgomery has a proven record of prosecutorial success at the County Level, and

Whereas, Republican Candidate Bill Montgomery has vowed to vigorously prosecute those arrested under SB1070, and

Whereas, Bill Montgomery commands the respect of all agencies to which he must interact as County Attorney including Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Board of Supervisors, and

Whereas, Interim Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley has endorsed numerous Democrat Party Candidates for office, even when in direct violation of Maricopa County Republican by-laws (e.g. 2002 Democrat Candidate for Secretary of State Chris Cummiskey, 2008 Democrat Candidate for Maricopa County Attorney Tim Nelson, and 2008 Democrat Candidate for Maricopa County Sheriff Dan Saban), and

Whereas, Rick Romley has abandoned his lawful responsibilities as County Attorney and refused to prosecute illegal immigrants under Arizona’s human smuggling law, which has a 94% prosecution success rate under former County Attorney Andrew Thomas, and

Whereas, just today, Rick Romley pulled $700,000 of funding for Employer-Sanctions enforcement from the County Sheriff’s office further obstructing efforts to identify, arrest, and prosecute perpetrators of identity theft, the gateway crime of illegal immigrants, and

Whereas, Rick Romley in his previous 16 year career as County Attorney failed to aggressively defend Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, resulting in millions of dollars in losses to Maricopa County in civil judgments, and

Whereas, the second of three Republican candidates and Chandler Mayor, Boyd Dunn has no prosecutorial experience whatsoever, and

Whereas, Mayor Dunn has traveled to Washington, D.C. as recently as 2008 to defend Comprehensive Immigration Reform, and

Whereas, Mayor Dunn has prohibited Chandler Police from inquiring about the immigration status of someone arrested for a misdemeanor offense, enforcing a de facto Sanctuary City Policy,

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the Executive Guidance Council of the Maricopa County Republican Committee endorses Bill Montgomery for Maricopa County Attorney in the upcoming Primary Election to be held on August 24, 2010.

Things like this ONLY happen when conservatives flock into the Party as precinct committeemen. The 26 people who cast votes were all elected representatives of the precinct committeemen. I spoke in support of the Resolution twice and other conservatives on the Committee, as well as precinct committeemen in the audience, spoke passionately in favor of the Resolution. One told a chilling story of his brother-in-law’s experience as a police chief in Sonora, Mexico — the drug cartels had cut off the heads of two of his deputies in just the last few days. He also spoke of the fact that the El Paso City Council building has been fired upon from across the border — a fact ignored by the media. Serveral precinct committeemen spoke about how they want the want the leadership of the Party to endorse “real” Republicans who will pledge to support and enforce all the laws, not just the ones they favor personally.

Again, these things happen ONLY if YOU will get involved INSIDE the Party. It’s a pure numbers game. Blogging doesn’t make these things happen. Showing up at Party meetings does. So, I hope you’ll become a precinct committeeman.

office when *I* lived in Phoenix and that was 15 years ago. He wasn’t any more of a Republican back then either. Can’t believe he actually endorsed Arpaio’s opponent. But I’m not surprised either.

Funny you should bring this up. If you’ll note a couple of diaries under yours is one expressing similar thoughts re: the endorsement of the more moderate candiate over the conservative one in NY-23. I even took the liberty of linking to the Precinct Project for reference to how easy this is.

I guess great minds must think alike, eh?

I got a call last night from a current county board member that had attempted to run for a different office and so isn’t on the ballot for his current seat. The person who WAS going to run to replace him has officially dropped out of the race.

So MrRiggio and I and a few other precinct committeemen in his district get to have a meeting and appoint someone to be on the ballot.

Precinct committeeman really IS one of the most powerful offices in the country. We get to select the people who everyone else get to vote on.

Here in Arizona, if a state legislator seat (senator or representative) becomes open, the precinct committeemen from that district have the power to nominate three people to fill the spot until the next election. The three nominees are presented to the county board of supervisors. If conservatives hold a majority of the PC slots, naturally all three nominees will be conservatives. The conservative PCs will have created the next conservative incumbent!

As you know, the real ball game of politics is played INSIDE the political parties.

. . . LD30, and in addition to writing nearly everyday, responding to articles at about five different websites, I am a precinct committeeman, and more importantly, a conservative one.

There is no way I’m going to sit back and let the Left steal this country from me, my children, and grandchildren. It’s time the Left were taken to the woodshed.

ColdWarrior, the Upcountry Coalition of Conservative Organizations (www.upcountrycoalition.org) is gearing up to begin our precinct reorganization efforts for the Spring. We will be covering a minimum of 5 SC counties, possible 2 or 3 more. I’ve seen you mention a “handout”? that you bring with you to rallies/meetings to inform folks what they need to do and why. Would you mind sharing that handout via email or other avenue so we can build off what you’ve found to work? thanks

P.S. Your are doing EXACTLY what needs to be done — GOTV for conservative candidates along with PC recruitment while you’re at it. Bravo!

Tea Parties are a base camp for the battle where we rest, refit and recuperate, recharge and rearm..

The actual battlefield is the rooms where party policy is made, just as CW was present for this battle.
