(UPDATE, August 2, 2010) The London Telegraph is now reporting that Assange has told the media that he has been advised by “inside sources in the White House” not to return to the US as he could be arrested.
Mr Assange says despite this he still fears he is at risk of being forcefully detained by the US government as a material witness in the prosecution of US intelligence analyst Bradley Manning.
(Hat tip to the Drudge Report.)
The video is not up yet [update: now it is]
, but I was sitting here just now watching Shephard Smith’s Studio B program. Judge Andrew Napolitano reported he had interviewed Mr. Assange from WikiLeaks. Napolitano asked Assange if he contacted the Obama Administration about the documents before releasing them. Assange said WikiLeaks did — so that the Obama Administration would have the opportunity to request redactions of any information that might be especially harmful (gee, like maybe the last names of the Afghan civilian informants?). The response from the Obama Administration? No response at all.
Someone may have blood on his hands.
UPDATE: Secretary of Defense Robert Gates says the WikiLeaks leaks could cause HUGE DAMAGE (per the Wall Street Journal):
The release of the documents, Mr. Gates said, potentially harmed U.S. relations with Pakistan and other countries, and put in danger Afghans who had cooperated with the U.S. Defense officials are taking steps to figure if Afghans mentioned in the documents may now require help. “That is one of the worst aspects of this: will people trust us?” Mr. Gates said.
Sorry, could not embed the video. Here’s the link:
I believe Judge Napolitano said his interview of Assange will run on a program on Fox this Saturday, but i did not catch which one (due to the shock I was experiencing as I listened to what he was saying).
FURTHER UPDATE: Here’s programming information from Freedom Watch for this weekend.

Thank you for your interest and support and please keep in touch.

BREAKING:
Breaking at HotAir.com: DoD spokesman confirms White House was contacted by The New York Times, contradicting earlier reported comments by the White House that it was never contacted by The New York Times on behalf of WikiLeaks.
Official Rejects Claim WikiLeaks Offered Document Review
By Army Sgt. 1st Class Michael J. Carden
American Forces Press ServiceWASHINGTON, July 30, 2010 – A claim by WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange that the U.S. government had an opportunity to review stolen military documents published on the group’s website is untrue, a Pentagon spokesman said today.
“It’s absolutely false that WikiLeaks contacted the White House and offered to have them look through the documents,” Marine Corps Col. David Lapan said.
“We never had the opportunity to look at any of the documents in advance to determine anything,” Lapan said. “The documents were brought to the attention of the White House, but no copies of documents, or opportunities to review were given.”
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said yesterday that Defense Department officials have asked the FBI to assist in investigating the leak of the classified material. Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said those responsible for the leak may have the blood of U.S. servicemembers and Afghan civilians on their hands.
[Bolding added.]
DoD, of course, is talking about one thing and not the other. WikiLeaks said it contacted The New York Times and other intermediaries, not the DoD. Wikileaks claims The New York Times contacted the White House. The White House had denied this. There are two real issues.
First, whether the White House turned down an opportunity to engage in negotiations with WikiLeaks to try to prevent the loss of life the release of these documents might cause (for example, the murder of Afghans otherwise secretly working for NATO forces as informants, etc.).
Second, why did the Obama Administration, which claims to be the most transparent presidential administration in history, first say, as mentioned in the video clip above, “He [Assange] never contacted us and then, later, admitting that The New York Times did contact them, but providing no further explanation.
Now, we learn from the DoD that the White House, learning that 92,000 SECRET and CONFIDENTIAL level classified documents were to be released that relating to an on-going “hot” war, that the White House, may have not even contacted the DoD. Assange from WikiLeaks claims he got no response from the White House. Nothing.
Hmmmm.

Update: another Fox reporter just reported NYT was the cut out
ColdWarrior (Diary) Wednesday, July 28th at 7:26PM EDT (link)Shephard Smith just played the clip of Assange telling Judge Napolitano he contacted “the White House” and offered the White House an opportunity to provide WikiLeaks with criteria for reviewing the documents to ensure no lives would be put in danger by the release. He added WikiLeaks received no response from the White House.
Shep Smith then brought on a Fox reporter who, after Napolitano’s interview, contacted Assange to follow-up. The reporter asked Assange directly how WikiLeaks contacted the White House. All WikiLeaks would say was that they contacted the White House through . . . the New York Times.
The reporter said WikiLeak’s clarrfication, that their offer to the White House was made through the New York Times, was consistent with some remarks Robert Gibbs made earlier that the White House was in contact with the New York Times about the release of the documents before WikiLeaks published them.
Eric Holder needs to begin his investigation of the leak at the Times and the White House.

Caveat Suffragator
They have no obligation
wingnut43 Thursday, July 29th at 12:13AM EDT (link)The White House has no obligation to ask anything to be redacted, or even to admit the information is true. The names of informants is one of several things that are classified by statute. It is a serious crime to expose intelligence sources, and any White House non-response to such second-hand questions (assuming Assange is telling the truth) is irrelevant. Wikileaks personnel can still be extradited or rendered to the US, and prosecuted for exposing informants — and they should be prosecuted. Exposing informants is unforgivable. If Obama was serious about protecting sources he would have the CIA capture Assange and other Wikileaks officers, and return them to the US for trial.
If The Great Obama wants a real distraction from his policy failures, he will wag the dog. A little nuclear war with Iran and North Korea will eliminate all other concerns, and might even allow Barack The Magnificent to cancel the election on emergency grounds.
To me, the interesting thing is the New York Times: Valery Plame vs. 92,000 classified docs
ColdWarrior (Diary) Thursday, July 29th at 1:10AM EDT (link)I have a little bit of experience in these matters.
Valerie Plame worked at CIA HQ. At a desk. She pushed paper. She had been trained as a case officer (as I was) but really wasn’t working as one. These are verifiable facts.
No classified information, other than the fact that she was employed at CIA, was involved. One case officer outed. Whoopdee effing do.
Remember the months and months and months of intense “mainstream media” dogged investigation of this story which led to the conviction of Scooter Libby of a non-crime? Turned out some blowhard (I can’t recall the chrome-dome’s name and I’m not in the mood to look it up) gave her name to the late Bob Novak.
And Scooter Libby couldn’t remember exactly what he said to who about it. And a D.C. jury decides he’s guilty of “something.”
Now, we have the New York Times acting as an intermediary between WikiLeaks and the White House relating to the release of 92,000 classified docs.
Uh, where’s the dogged investigative journalists? At the New York Times? Elsewhere?
Crickets chirp.
Hypothetical. I’m sitting in the West Wing. I’m a national security advisor. I’m told WikiLeaks (they are well-known and have a track record and, hell, are on the net) has contacted the White House because they have 92,000 classified documents (not one, not ten, not one hundred, but 92,000) SECRET and CONFIDENTIAL, and they’re going to release them. Not about the status of a single CIA case officer, but about a “hot” war. An ongoing “hot” war. With real lives at stake.
WikiLeaks, as much as I despise what they do, apparently have a human streak. They want to uncover classified information, but they don’t want there efforts to result in innocent people being killed. They are asking for redaction guidance. How hard is it to say, “Thank you for your consideration. Please redact the names and villages of all Afghans who cooperated with the U.S.”?
Some context. In the Seventies, when I was a Second Lieutenant, and the Information Security Officer for an Army branch post, I was tasked to conduct a full-blown investigation into the circumstances relating to a computer tape that held the payroll data for a single unit at that Army post that had gone missing for one hour. The tape was classified SECRET because it gave troop strengths. I spent a day or two interviewing every possible witness and had to write up a detailed report. I was convinced it was just an accident — a messenger had screwed up; no unauthorized copying of that tape would have been possible by the messenger involved.
If I had concluded otherwise, there would have been a trial and someone would have faced the possibility of spending some time at Ft. Leavenworth.
Here we have 92,000 documents that are SECRET or CONFIDENTIAL about to be released, about an ongoing “hot” war, and the Commander-in-Chief and his staff doesn’t seem to care. At all.
Hmmmm.

It was worse than that, CW...
merryj1 Friday, July 30th at 2:32PM EDT (link)(re: the Valerie Plame “investigation”): Plame had previously been working in the field, but was pulled in because of potentially being identified (I think that had something to do with her cover, the “private company” employer, & she was one of several who might have been compromised). Meanwhile, her husband, Joe Wilson, had her and her CIA resume included on a “Who’s Who” list; but it was Richard Armitage, a State Department deputy to Colin Powell, who dropped her name (inadvertantly, apparently) during a lunch chat with Robert Novak. Patrick Fitzgerald, the appointed Special Prosecutor, knew this when he BEGAN his “investigation,” as did Colin Powell. Fitzgerald started and pursued his witch hunt, knowing exactly what had happened, and by who.
The 92,000 documents leaked: Manning, of course, should be planted under a penitentiary — but so should the nameless, faceless chain-of-command cogs that allowed a Manning to gain access to sensitive, let alone secret stuff. If nothing else, if any of the Afghanis on that list are killed, the entire (relevant) chain up to and including WH personnel should be indicted on Depraved Indifference charges.

Another example of the incompetence of the Opuppet Admin. Some argue that it’s worse than incompetence — that Opuppet and his script writers could care less about spending time on preventing the release of information that would hurt our war efforts in Afghanistan and result in informants and others to be killed.
I would like to see someone put together a time line of Opuppet’s whereabouts every step of the way on this when, allegedly, WikiLeaks, via the NYTimes, made their offer to work with the Admin. to prevent the worst of the information, that could get people killed, from ever seeing the light of day.
Judge Andrew Napolitano’s staff tells me that this is just “the tip of the iceberg” and that they are aggressively investigating this matter.

Veronica (Diary) Saturday, July 31st at 4:34PM EDT (link)I would like to add that if there’s an increase in violence and unrest in Afghanistan “resulting from WikiGate,” this would be the perfect cover for not meeting the 2011 deadline, which we were bound to miss, anyway.
Anyone watching this thing would know that. McChyrstal, the rebel said he needed 60,000 to 80,000 troops, but Obama slows it to a crawl for some other reason.
When it gets worse, we won’t be able to leave. This pushes him to 2012 where he will gain support of rogue independents and conservatives who think, “Well, he’s pursuing Afghanistan.. that’s good.” while the left thinks “It wasn’t his war and he’s cleaning up.Let’s give him the 2nd term to wrap this up. Another guy in office will reset this whole fiasco and we’ll be stuck there for, who knows, 25 years!”
The truth is, nation-building takes a very, VERY long time. They — officials outside of America — said as much during the end of Bush’s tenure. We just didn’t hear it. McCain knew, though. Obama used his words against him.
Excuses, excuses.
We need to find a way to use this war against him. Rip apart any hero and golden leadership anecdotes, lest he steal our votes.
We also need to bring into question his restructuring of the military.

call me a liar
Veronica (Diary) Monday, August 2nd at 5:01AM EDT (link)WaTimes reports that Obama, Gates and Pelosi made the Sunday show rounds and tried to debunk the nation-building.
Per Gates, the U.S. is “not there to take on a nationwide reconstruction or construction project in Afghanistan.”
But tell me if this isn’t talking out of both side of our mouths:
“”We are in Afghanistan because we were attacked from Afghanistan, not because we want to try and build a better society in Afghanistan,” he said.
“But doing things to improve governance, to improve development in Afghanistan, to the degree it contributes to our security mission and to the effectiveness of the Afghan government in the security arena, that’s what we’re going to do.”
Here’s Pelosi’s take:
“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, when asked on “This Week” what the U.S. would to do protect Afghan women from brutal attacks by the Taliban, responded that the central U.S. mission in the country is “our own national security – to stop terrorism, to increase global security.”
((Stop terrorism, ok? This isn’t a war on terror anymore, but we’re stopping terrorism, part of which stems from that legit tenet of Islam, jihad. Surprised? Obama uses the “t” word in the article, too))
Continuing on Pelosi:
“The California Democrat said that she and Congress are concerned that Afghan women and children receive proper health care and education, but “that can’t happen without security” and the end of political corruption in the country.”
Here we have Pelosi, pulling on the heartstrings of your typical lefty lib w/ women and children, healthcare and education. The establishment of social services. For a sane society.
Nevermind at whose expense .. but she establishes this as a goal “that can’t happen without security” and ” the end of political corruption in the country,” per WaTimes.
So .. we’re 18 months in, at a point where there is no security -still- and we have yet to ensure no political corruption so we can build schools, hospitals and such.
Isn’t this nation-building?
If it is, I doubt ALL this can be completed by the end of Obama’s first term, much less July 2011.
I wish they would be truthful and give it to us straight.
