MEMBER DIARY

“We the People” and Glenn Beck’s “I can’t believe I live in an America where ______.”

September 22, 2010

Yesterday on Glenn Beck’s program, he used the theme, “I can’t believe I live in an America where ______” to drive home the point that the Democrats are doing really, really bad things.

Did you know that the Democrats are doing really, really bad things?!?!

I tuned in about half-way through his hour-long program. It was late, but I decided to watch the rest of the program to see if “this isn’t about politics” Glenn Beck would tell his viewers HOW to stop the plans of those rascally Dems.

I have written here in the past about the “Conservative Grievance Industry.” (“CGI.”) Beck seems to be a member. I have read his books. The books of the CGI follow this formula: the Dems are really, really bad. The Republicans have better ideas. So . . . let’s take our country back!

How? The CGI authors (DeMint, Levin, Hannity, Morris, Scarborough, Ingraham, etc.) never explain.

Also, I have, pointedly, criticized Glenn Beck for never offering any solutions, only recitations of problems. However, he has done much good — he single-handedly caused Van Jones to lose his job, and perhaps also Anita Dunn. But, is Beck doing or saying ANYTHING to encourage people who want to “do something” politically to become knowledgeable about how to get into the real ball game of politics — party politics? Well, so far, as best I can discern: Nope.

For someone who has several people following him around all day, taking down his every thought (according to Forbes magazine), this tells me something.

Beck did appeal tonight to union members listening: “Demand [your union] represent your values.”

Boy, that’s really concrete! Beck ended his program with, “America, we have to get out and vote. [But, Glenn, you keep saying "this is not about politics!" -- Isn't voting "politics?"] We can do better. Take our 40 days and 40 nights challenge.”

At least Beck is now telling his viewers to vote.

By contrast, unlike Beck and the rest of the CGI cadre, Erick Erickson breaks the mold by explaining, concretely, in his just-published book, “Red State Rising: How To Take Back America,” the “HOW.” Specifically, see Chapter 15, “Take Back America,” sub-headings “Learn the Rules” and “Take Back the Party.” Unlike all the other Conservative Grievance Industry books, Erick gives concrete, specific instructions (and examples where conservatives who have come into the Republican Party have had success) as to HOW “We the [conservative] People” can take back the Republican Party by becoming “card carrying” members of the Party — precinct committeemen — so we can vote for the leadership of the Party and help make sure the best conservative candidates win the all-important, traditionally-very-low-turnout primary elections. Erick explains HOW TO TAKE BACK THE PARTY AND, THEREBY, OUR GOVERNMENT.

Get Erick’s book. NOW! It is INVALUABLE.

And, if you can, please help Get Out The Vote by visiting the Concord Project! Then ACT!

Is not a new program on FOX. So all you pundits. How many precincts have you walked. How many times. How man y calls have you made. How many Tea Party rallies have you gone to to recruit PC’s. How many signs have you waved. How many signs have you stuck in the ground. How many meet and greets for your candidates have you gone to. How much money have you helped to raise. What is your number. ( how many you need in your precinct to have more votes then the democrat to win the precinct )

Action by doing vs Action by writing.

Oh, and I work full time. I’m a job creator. No work. No money.

Beck absolutely offers solutions just not a political ones, but cultural ones.

    1. Faith – We must, as individuals, return to our faith and our churches. Divine Providence has always had a role in this nation but we must turn back to God. The Left has spent a hundred years removing Him from our society and the new Black Robe Regiment has vowed to push back against that.

    2. Hope – We must have hope that we can make a difference for our posterity and the future of this country. Beck uses the analogy of a sick child in hospital and the parent praying for God to give it to them instead so that the child may have a future. Our hope must lead us to action that we may not have otherwise taken. This is why knowing history is o important. The Declaration of Independence says the founders pledged their “lives, fortunes, and Sacred honor” but offering their life didn’t necessarily mean dying. It means sacrificing to live in a way that you may not necessarily want to (getting involved in politics, running for office, donating money to campaigns, fighting the progressives). Basically doing the things you don;t want to do but are necessary in order that your children may have a chance.

    3. Charity – Beck’s solution here is that if we, as citizens, are not charitable then the government must be. Charity begins at home so make more time for your family.

Not an easy solution, but a good one, I think.

CW, love all that you do and how you focus on action but your diary title is divisive and not inclusive. I would ask it to be changed as it sends out the wrong message. Don’t pit EE against Beck. We need to join together, with each having different strengths, complimentary, synergy.

Beck has done great good getting the message out. He has wide distribution.

It’s up to us to tap into that to take it to the next level.

I can see where Beck wants to stay independent. He has to be careful not to endorse the Rep party wholesale. But I think Beck can be pushed to deliver a message to his audience that the Rep party is the BEST VEHICLE to enact real positive change. This nuance can free him from total endorsement of Republicans and also prevent a very catastrophic situation for all of us of the dreaded 3rd party.
Maybe we need a little coordinated campaign to get this message to Beck and others.

    We need a big tent.

We don’t need to belittle or put down Beck as your title implies. He has done more than his share already. I see we just need to channel that raw energy in a slightly different direction.

Think of Beck as an engine. He has rpms and horsepower to rev, but it is up to us to be the transmission and tires to transfer that power to the ground to get somewhere.

Keep up the great work CW. Ahhnold, Stallone, VanDamme? Nah! YOU are the new ACTION HERO.

I changed a word in the title per your suggestion. Not trying to be decisive. Just trying to motivate people to ACT.

    Thanks again,

Then I look at what he did and it either makes sense or channeled some more positive energy forward. Case in point 8/28. Like others I appreciated the efforts made by 500,000 or more to participate but wondered what good it would do specifically for the conservative movement? Two days later still wondering. About a week later, I do believe it seems like the whole Dem apparatus from top (Obama) to bottom started shaking and imploding. I was looking in the wrong place. I think it really shook ‘em up to see 500,000 registered voters on their “home turf” doing what they thought “they” (libDems) do best – convocations at the Lincoln Memorial. All i know is the Dems have been imploding and then running like rats since about 8/28. Coincidence? Did Beck plan this? I don’t know. But it’s all good.

Sometimes it really gets to ‘em to Saul Alinsky them on their own perceived turf. Remem ber the true story about Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering in WW2 – he fought the German Luftwaffe for years across three continents & as many oceans. But one day in 1944 he walked out in the streets of Berlin, looked up and saw American Mustang fighters flying overhead – “when I saw Mustangs over the capital, I knew the ‘jig was up’” he said. And so it was, just a few months later for him and the Third Reich.
