Bragging rights for GOTV: some suggestions for getting them

One of two things will happen on Nov. 2. Either the Democrats will retain power in the House of Representatives, or not. Same re the Senate.

Assuming the Democrats lose that power, in one or both cases, will you have bragging rights? Will you be able to say, “I actually got some people to the polls, I think, because I . . . “?

Some suggestions for achieving bragging rights:

No matter where you live, I recommend you contact the campaign headquarters of your Republican House and (if applicable) Senate candidates and ask how you can help Get Out the Vote (“GOTV”). If they want your help, pitch in and help. Even if it means sweeping the floors.

Assuming you live in a safe Republican district, the campaigns may tell you they have things well in hand. Or, if you live in a solid Dem district, they may say, we don’t think we can win. In either case, I recommend you go to a site like www.40seats.com and or www.takebackthe20.com and pick a conservative Republican candidate for whom you can make GOTV phone calls from afar (because there’s no sense trying to help a sure winner or sure loser). The three candidates I recommend you place at the top of your list are Senate candidate Joe Miller in Alaska and Senate candidate Christine O’Donnell in Delaware:

(Watch the videos on the net of Allen West. I want him in the House. He fights.)

With so few days left before the mailing of the early ballots, each day becomes critical. For example, assuming a viable candidate exists in your locale, they may need help right now stuffing envelopes for mailers, putting up signs, making phone calls, etc.

If you’ve never been involved in GOTV efforts you can learn a little bit about it at the Concord Project:

For reference, two other great resources for learning about Get Out The Vote and precinct organizing are American Majority and The Voices of America:

Please, let’s give it our best shot — let’s all get into the trenches and help Get Out The Vote and help win EVERY RACE POSSIBLE!

If only two or three more people had worked the phones in Minnesota in 2008 for Norm Coleman, we would not have senator Al Franken today and Obamacare would have been blocked by a filibuster!

The only quibble I have is a subtlety about working for sure winners or sure losers.

There is no time like the middle of an election season, when people are thinking about politics, to recruit new people into the cause. This fight will go on for decades, and we will need to start turning losers into winners at some point.

And in an off-year election when the Dems are demoralized, if you have a “sure loser” precinct it may be that the other side doesn’t do their GOTV work. If enough of them stay home, and your GOTV effort is good, you may be able to pull off a win.

In the end, every vote counts. You may be slogging through in a 70-30 loser or winner, but the person you get to vote for your particular candidate also votes for others on the ballot. Your candidate has coattails.

      55555 for that line alone.

In making calls for one state-wide candidate who has a chance, I also mention the more local candidates this voter can choose. Name recognition always help for lesser-funded candidates.

While I’ve made calls on behalf of candidates that didn’t win (never mind my enthusiastic effort on their behalves!) I’M UNDETERRED.
    I’ll hit the phones again.

This was a wonderful post CW: keep ‘em coming.

I live in New York City so it’s pretty useless to work in my own town (among other problems, the Republican party here is just above — barely above — room-temperature moribund) so technology has been a gift: I can call on behalf of great candidates in different parts of the U.S.

YESSSSS! We can all do that!!

Thank you for your reminder, ColdWarrior.

    No, make that…THANK YOU!!
