MEMBER DIARY

For once I’m looking forward to April 15: “Atlas Shrugged: Part 1″ hits the theaters

“It always begins with ‘Atlas Shrugged.’”

I became a member of the Conservative Book Club back in the late 1970s and I recall a line like that in their monthly mailer advertising Ayn Rand’s books. I started with “Atlas Shrugged.” And then read just about everything else Ayn Rand wrote that I could get my hands on. Joined an Objectivist Club. Watched a couple of Objectivist scholars thoroughly perplex Christopher Hitchens and another lib at a debate at George Washington University in the early 1980s.

So, I was so pleasantly surprised to see that, finally, a film production of “Atlas Shrugged” is about to hit the theaters. At least “Part 1.” I predict it will be a huge hit. And, with the profits, the succeeding episodes will be even better. It really ought to be about a 12 episode mini-series on HBO or some other network.

Tonight while watching “Hannity” on Fox, I thought Sean Hannity said the release date is April 15, 2011. How fitting.

Here’s the trailer:

All of which brings to mind: “Howard Roark laughed.

I know where I’ll be on April 15, 2011.

At last. For those who may have missed it, check out the old movie, “The Fountainhead” with Gary Cooper.

“There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.”

The screenwriter posts a good bit of info on facebook on the page for Atlas Shrugged: The Movie (I can’t view facebook at work, or I’d include a link). Anyway, he said that it is initially scheduled for a very limited release, something like 80 screens. I think that it’s 10 screens per city in eight major cities. They’ll roll it out to more theaters as they have more money (No major studio is backing it). The strategy is to appeal to fans (which is pretty obvious by the trailer, which would make no sense at all to people who haven’t read the book) and use word-of-mouth to draw more viewers. It’s sort of a risky strategy, in my opinion, but it probably makes the most sense, since Rand’s fans are so passionate.

At any rate, he encourages people to talk about it with friends and neighbors and, if you have any information about your local theater manager, sent it to him. This can be done via the facebook page or through the contact us form on the movie’s website.

In case you’ve never seen it, here is Gary Cooper as Howard Roark in “The Fountainhead.”

    Thank you.
