Beat the tar out of Seton Hall tonight up in the swamps of Jersey. It is good to see Georgetown finally getting on the right track this year.

I realize this belongs over on the sports page, but open threads are few and far between, so I'm taking advantage of it.

He may be a great guy...but why would anyone ever want a senator to be president? Senators aren't leaders. They can't be. You can't get anything done in the senate by leading, only by making consensus with a bunch of people who all have their own agenda and feel like they are the most important one in the room.

Move up to the Executive and all of a sudden you are the most important one in the room. A whole new ballgame. You've now got to be guided by a strong internal sense of what's the best thing to do.

It's a big part of the reason we don't elect Senators to be president. There are other reasons (like their voting records) that people point to but I think a lot of those stem from the central, "not a leader" problem.

It's why I don't like Brownback, or McCain and didn't like Allen. Nice guys, but they are Senators. It's why the Democrats should be worried about Obama, Hillary, Edwards, Dodd, Biden, etc. Look for Richardson to rise now that he's "exploring" the idea of running.

Republicans should be looking to Romney, Guliani and Newt (the House is a different ball game).

The primary is till a long ways away and lots can happen between then and now. McCain, Guiliani, and flip-flop Mitt are not acceptable social conservatives. Make no mistake, the social conservatives will rally around one candidate and right now Brownback seems like the likeliest choice. Iowa is also tailor-made for Brownback to do surprisingly well and catapult him into the top tier.

“The term ‘compassionate conservatism’ is great, but it’s basically a marketing term,” he says. “I think it’s been overused in rhetoric and underutilized in public policy. I want to make it a reality.”

I just can't express my Underwhelmment™. Thanks Senator. You have firmly cemented you place on my list of acceptable candidates right next to John McCain.

Brownback steps in as The Conservative.

Let's see him start making some fiery speeches in the Senate.

Brownback's opposition to abortion and gay marriage, and his platform against wasteful federal spending and for compassionate and practical programs to help the poor, energy independence, stopping cancer, term limits for judges and members of Congress, and a flat tax, isn't going to win the nomination. He has alienated the core of his chosen conservative constituency by opposing the revised Iraq strategy and by supporting a path to citizenship for some of the nation's 11 million illegal aliens.

Even though he first announced he was running on December 4, a new Washington Post and ABC News poll finds Brownback supported by only 1 percent. That's the same level of support CNN and Pew polls found for Brownback in November.
