More information on supporting the information aspect of the Iraq effort here

via Vets for Freedom.

Last week, Vets for Freedom launched our "10 Weeks to Testimony" campaign and committed to leading the charge to support General Petraeus and stop anti-war radicals and politicians on Capitol Hill from undermining the mission in Iraq.

Unfortunately-despite thousands of phone calls to Capitol Hill this week--even more Republican senators have bowed to political pressure and declared defeat, despite progress being shown by General Petraeus's new counter-insurgency strategy.

Next week, politicians in Washington, DC are poised to sell out America's safety because election season is near. As veterans, we cannot allow this to happen. The information battle Vets for Freedom was planning for September is upon us in July, therefore we must adapt, overcome, and do something immediately. Our collective voice must be heard on Capitol Hill, and it must be heard now!

This is a call to action. We are asking every Iraq and Afghanistan veteran who believes in supporting the mission--and defeating America's enemies--to converge on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on Tuesday, July 17. It's time the fighters in this war tell their representatives--face to face-that now is no time to betray the mission.

What You Can Do This Week!

Week #2: Converge on Capitol Hill, July 17

Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have already sacrificed blood, sweat, and tears on foreign battlefields. Now America needs one more thing while you're home -- one day of your time. We are the last line of defense.

We're not going to protest, wave signs, or scream slogans. We are going to make our voices heard, in a professional manner, in keeping with the finest traditions of our great country and military. I have no doubt you will want to join us.

But you say: "It's an entire Tuesday, and travel is expensive!" We share these legitimate concerns, but answer with this fundamental question: If not you, then who? Who else will tell Congress to give General Petraeus, his strategy, and our comrades time to complete the mission? It has come to this. It must be us.

Read on . . .

But you also say: "It's such short notice, and I have to work." Again, legitimate concerns, but we have already received commitments from numerous veterans with full-time jobs who have said--no matter the notice--I'll be there. We need the same from you. Your country needs the same from you.

You might also say, "I'm Active Duty, I can't do this type of stuff." There is a common misconception that troops serving on active duty cannot participate in events like this. This is false. As long as you are 1) out of uniform; 2) not speaking on behalf of "the military"; and 3) not protesting, you are absolutely allowed to be involved. The same goes for National Guard and Reserve troops.

We hope to raise enough money--from the supporters of Vets for Freedom who cannot make it to Washington, DC--to ensure that everyone who makes the trip is reimbursed at some level.

Every dollar donated to Vets for Freedom between now and July 17 will go directly to covering travel costs of veterans.

So, how do you get involved? Be bold. Take a stand. And join your fellow Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines on Capitol Hill. Here's what you need to do:

Iraq & Afghanistan Veterans

If you are a veteran and are ready to take a stand and join us on Capitol Hill on July 17, please send an email to Adriel at adriel@vetsforfreedom.org as soon as possible. The email should contain the following 6 points of information:

  1. Name and basic information (phone number, email, and zip code)
  2. Military background (OIF/OEF experience, unit, current status)
  3. Home state (and any other states you have lived in)
  4. Your most probable means of transportation to Washington, DC
  5. A very brief biography (no more than one paragraph)
  6. Any questions you might have

When Vets for Freedom receives your email, we will email you the following information as soon as possible:

  • Time and place for initial link up in Washington, DC (assume between 8--9am)
  • Driving directions, maps, and parking instructions
  • Basic timeline/instructions for the day (assume day will finish between 5--6pm)
  • Other preparation materials

When you arrive in Washington, DC on Tuesday morning, you will receive an in-brief and Vets for Freedom you provide you with the following:

  • Detailed itinerary (including your office visit schedule, media schedule, and event schedule to visit your member of Congress--everything will be done in groups)
  • Latest Iraq news and information
  • Capitol Hill map
  • Vets for Freedom complementary polo shirt; breakfast and lunch provided

Supporters of Our Veterans

You may not be able to make it to Washington, DC, but that doesn't mean you can't still support our mission on July 17. You can do the following three things:

1) Donate. As we've already mentioned, every dollar donated in the next 4 days will be used to reimburse the travel costs of veterans who will be paying their own way to Capitol Hill.

2)

Call your Senator. The response to our Week 1 "call to action" was incredible. Thank you. Thousands of calls were made, and we need to do this again. Reinforce our veterans on Capitol Hill by calling the 2 Senators from your home state on July 17 and telling them to support the troops-and the mission!

3) Forward this Email. Send this email to everyone you know. Post it on your blog. Print it out and hand it out to friends. Get the word out, so we can get as many veterans on Capitol Hill as possible.

This is our mission. This is our moment. Join Vets for Freedom on Capitol Hill and do your part to support our fellow soldiers and Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan

See you on the 17th!

Regards,

I'll be there. by The Fastest Squirrel

I'll bring along two buddies. They are in town for a funeral at Arlington National Cemetery for yet another buddy on Wednesday. So really, there will be four of us there.

Radicals? by grinder

"and stop anti-war radicals and politicians"

Well over half the country is against this war.

...so you can go do something else now.

Translation: Your incipient threadjack is now over.

The Fuzzy Puppy of the VRWC. I've been usurped!

they are against that.

They are being lied to by the media and Democrats.

In fact we are winning and we are not going to allow the antiwar movement to turn our victory into a defeat.

If what you say is true in any meaningful way, there would be massive demonstrtions against the war. What was the last big demonstration you saw? Three people from Code Pink isruping a hearing doesn't cut it.

More than half the people in this country think American Idol is quality entertainment and Survivor is real.

That doesn't mean they are.

Majority may rule, but it doesn't necessarily make right.

Over half are against the by harcosparky

Over half are against the war??????

100% of the country is being lied to about progress in this war?

Why lie? Because if they knew the truth about progress they may not " poll " against the war.

Think of it this way .....

100% are lied to ....
50% are against ....
50% are for ....

It shows that 50% of Americans are smarter and know better than to swallow the lies from the Democrats and main stream media.

people think is that simple yes and no or even multiple options questions fail to take into consideration the fact that people may give the same answer for different reasons. As in 1972, the anti-war movement saw the rise in "anti-war" sentiment reflected in the polls as a sign that McGovern would win in a landslide. What they did not realize that some of the "anti-war" vote did not represent anti-war voters but, instead, the nuke Hanoi/pave North Viet-Nam crowd.

Political polling, as opposed to marketing surveys, does not consider that the people being polled may give the same answer for very different reasons. Marketing polls, on the other hand, are designed to seperate out the differences. Marketing types, after being "burned" by such polling disasters as the cake mix fiasco, are very carefull in puting together a poll. They realize that, if the questions are poorly put, the results will be worthless.

"As in 1972, the anti-war movement saw the rise in "anti-war" sentiment reflected in the polls as a sign that McGovern would win in a landslide."

Only a small percentage of radicals believed that "anti-war" sentiment equaled support for McGovern. Most of the "anti-war" people voted for Nixon, not McGovern, because McGovern had little credibility as a candidate.

Nixon ran as a "Peace With Honor," not a business as usual , pro-war candidate. I don't think you can find any polls in which McGovern led Nixon during the 1972 elections. I believe that McGovern polled about 25 percent prior to the election. McGovern lost all but two states and D.C.

The big mistake that the Democrats make is to believe that "anti-war" sentiment equates to
immediate withdrawl.

Much of the anti-war sentiment during the Vietnam War and today is similar. It was and is a rejection of "stay the course," and "we are making progress," not a rejection of staying and fighting it. Nixon came up with the Vietnamization Program. The next President will have an Iraqization Program. Let's hope we have better luck, this time.

Jeff, thanks for coordinating this important effort.

I felt I had to make a by Joanna Hall

I felt I had to make a contribution (although small) to make up for having, possibly, the sorriest excuse for a United States Senator in the history of this dying, overtaxed union strong-hold we call the State of Ohio. Yes, I'm referring to George Voinovich (R-OH).

I may have to make yet another donation tomorrow because in addition to enduring George Voinovich, we also sport Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and (I hate admitting this), Dennis Kucinich (D_OH, commonly known as the Man Who Finished Destroying Cleveland), my own personal Representative.

Enough whining. I was glad I could help in a small way and pray daily that the world wakes up to understand that this mission isn't about winning a war, it's about survival.

Men often oppose a thing merely because they have had no agency in planning it, or because it may have been planned by those whom they dislike. - Alexander Hamilton

Joanna, I Empathize by Repair Man Jack

I live in the Fiar City of ALexandria, Va. Known colloquially as Occupied Va. My 'representative' is Jim Moran. Moran is Murtha's boychick; his amigo. My newest Senator is Jim Webb (h--l-bent on proving that being Senator is so easy a caveman could do it.)

My other Senator, John Warner, is more famous for being dumb enough to marry Liz Taylor than for being intelligent enough to pass any worthwhile legislation. I'm sure they'll name a school for the blind after him somewhere in The Old Dominion.

I'd rather see Gore get oxed than my ox get gored.

$50 in the kitty. by smagar

As I'm in Arizona, I can't be there in the flesh. I will be there in spirit.

"Who will stand/On either hand/And guard this bridge with me?" (Macaulay)

Why July 17th? by smagar

I'm concerned about the short time frame in which to respond. The Gathering of Eagles, on the other hand, had over a month to prepare. I'm concerned that a poor turnout for a "call to arms" like this will be portrayed/interpreted as a sign of weakness amongst the anti-surge forces.

What's so magical about July 17th? Senate debate on Iraq War-related resolutions? The Lugar-Warner amendment?

Regardless, I'm concerned that we simply lack the time necessary to mount a full-scale "assault" of surge supporters on Capitol Hill. If Household 6 agrees, I'll donate more money to the kitty, and do whatever I can to help.

But, let's not portray this as a "make-or-break" effort on our part.
