The Michigan Debate

By Erick Posted in Comments (423) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

The GOP debate starts at 4pm on CNBC. It will re-air tonight at 9pm.

Today will be Fred Thompson's first debate. I'll be on XM Satellite Radio's new POTUS Channel in about twenty minutes discussing all of this.

In the meantime, have at it boys and girls -- a debate open thread.

And the first question goes to Thompson. He's not looking directly at the camera. He's slow out of the gate though answering the question.

Good job pulling it to spending.

Great on Romney taking on Michigan's government! Well freakin' done!

Mike, I think you've by Flagstaff

mentioned an important characteristic of both men. The pundits disparage Fred because he doesn't launch into a litany of reasons why (name it) makes him better than Rudy. I'd rather have a President who thinks about a question before he answers, rather than one who seems to have all the answers memorized.

Mitt, OTOH, seems to be spring-loaded with answers to every question, and they all seem to lead him to Rudy. I noticed that, and I like Mitt.

Well, it was Ike that made that statement first. But it was in a very specific context and I think it's been wildly misused by the left, especially considering what it means when you line up the supposed meaning of it according to the leftists, and Ike's actions.

Not Our Call by BananaRepublican

Iraq is a sovereign nation. We don't have the right to carve up another nation that wants to stay in tact.

Umm... by RandomGuy

Iraq was a sovereign nation before we invaded it too. So was Nazi Germany, Japan, etc.

I think partition is a terrible idea for a whole bunch of reasons, but we built the new Iraqi government, and until it stands on it's own, we can do away with it if we like. There are a whole bunch of reasons as to why that's a bad idea, but if I thought it was a good idea I'd not hesitate to do it.

We established a new government for Japan as well. Basically, it went this way: The Japanese government voted on stuff, then, after having decided, asked MacArthur if they could do what they wanted. He said yes or no. And sometimes he did say no, try again. If that's necessary in Iraq, then it's necessary. I don't think it is right now, but that's not the point.

He said he would consult with his lawyers about whether he (as President) would have to consult with Congress before taking a hypothetical premptive strike to protect the security of the United States. The question was legal in nature. Does the President have to consult with Congress? I would hope that all our nominees would consult attorneys should that hypothetical situation arise.

Should have said:

"If Iran became a clear and present danger to the United States requiring immediate action I believe a President can act without Congressional approval to secure American safety. If immediate is not necessary, then of course I will first secure Congressional approval before entering into a war."

I mean- that is the loophole that those lawyers will be looking at right? So why not put it out and say it.

but I don't think it's a flub for a candidate to say that he would consult with his attorneys should that occassion arise. I hope every candidate would.

I'm beginning to suspect that Ron Paul is being used as a tool a-la- Ralph Nader, 2000

Oz

Is what worries me by RandomGuy

Is that Paul could actually pull a Nader and run as an independent or a Libertarian. After all, he's already got a primary for his house seat, and may well not keep it.

That said, I'm not convinced that he wouldn't pull more D votes then R votes, being as how he's so pure against the war, which a lot of moonbats would like, but it's also entirely possible he'll pull more R votes. Basically, he'd be an X factor that would make things very difficult.

Anyhow, I hope he doesn't run as an I or L, and I hope he loses his primary for his House seat.

“I am telling people loosen your ties, fire up the coffee pots, get ready for the weekend, ... We've got a lot of work to do.”

... isn't someone who would otherwise vote for any of the likely Republican nominees. If he wants to run 3rd party that's fine with me.

Iran has the ability to close the straights where the oil in the region travels through. If we attacked them they would do it in a heartbeat. The wold economy would grind to a halt without it.

If Iran attempted to close the straights, the closure would last less than a day. Of course, that would assume that RP hasn't pulled the US Navy back to port in the US to protect our borders and the seven mile limit (or whatever it is).

Talk about being totally out of touch with anything even resembling reality...
