Jena 6 Boys Present Award at BET's Hip Hop Awards
What is "celebrity culture" coming to? This is outrageous...
By Ericka Andersen Posted in 2008 — Comments (116) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »
I was shocked to learn that two of the ‘Jena 6’ boys were recently award presenters at the 2nd Annual BET Hip Hop Awards. Bryant Purvis and Carwin Jones presented the award for Hip Hop Video of the year and thanked the hip hop community for their support during the Jena 6 trials. But wait – why should these two make an appearance among the accomplished hip hop artists of today? Why are two men who were charged with attempted murder and conspiracy being propelled into celebrity status?
I’m not as versed in the Jena 6 case as I could be but it doesn’t take a genius see that an invitation to appear on the awards show was in no way appropriate. The charges are overkill but they still committed a crime. In fact, because this was the BET awards, it makes it seem like the black community wants to uphold these individuals as role models. But they’ve done more to exemplify bad behavior than become symbols of some sort of faux- civil rights movement.
READ MORE BELOW THE FOLD
People accused law enforcement of racism – saying the charges were too harsh. Three white students had recently hung a noose around a tree and were not sufficiently punished, according to many in the community. The issue brought black people from across the country and of course Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to the rescue. Without analyzing the case – racism, racial profiling or not – nothing in this situation merits reward for these two.
If the boys were not punished at all, they still beat someone unconscious. How is this to be praised? How is the black community supposed build itself up, decrease violence and poverty rates, eliminate violence and obscene lyrics and ideas from music when they prop up people like these two as examples? Were they unjustly targeted? Perhaps they were – not for me to decide. But they were definitely undeservedly praised in this way.
NPR asks: What does it say about the culture's celebrity obsession that these two would be feted as stars? Do you think their participation in the award show undermines the gravity of the situation in Jena, La.?
It doesn’t just undermine the situation – it makes it look like a joke.

Jena 6 Boys Present Award at BET's Hip Hop Awards 116 Comments (0 topical, 116 editorial, 0 hidden) Post a comment »
There is one thing, and ONLY one thing that'll I'll give to the loony Islamo-Nazi crowd, as being on the money.
American Hollywood-music-pop culture is decadent, depraved, and the utter antithesis of all that is positive and good.
I'll go them one further. The hip-hop bunch, they are the worst of a sorry bunch.
It's war -- so when can we start shooting back at the enemy Democrats?
a couple years and report on the status of these guys.
A great deal of financial and emtional support for the Jena 6 legal defense comes from the Hip Hop community from artists such as Mos Def, T.I. and Common. Presumably the Public Relations and Marketing personnel from Black Entertainment Television deemed it appropriate to bring the boys on the air in order to express a public "thank you" while the program maintained the attention of some couple hundred thousand African American viewers. Indeed rap music has it flaws(almost as violent and thought provoking as heavy metal), however, I don't think the Black community/Hip Hop is condoning violence by supporting these boys. It is merely a common reaction, human nature if you will, for the morals in this case to become blurred due to all the racial tension and legal desparities present in this case. On the one hand we have a victim who was badly beaten and on the other we have the legal rights of 6 young men who some believe are being compromised. Black people are more preoccupied with that of fair justice than they are with the beating. Just like those groups who are more concerned with the beating than the hanging of nooses. You catching on to the trend yet? In either case, neither groups are condoning anything, they're just not as concerned. I believe some of you have absolutely no idea of the impact that the outcome of this case will have on American history, especially in Louisiana; and especially following the events of hurricane Katrina. Regardless of the verdict.
Until this: "You catching on to the trend yet?"
Then it just falls apart and goes downhill from there.

I have at least one of those.
Question, what about "artists" puzzled you? By the way, I freakin love your signature! I agree. Oh yeah, I'm a SHE.
Actually I rather enjoy hip-hop now and then. Although Mos Def is mos deaf to reason, accuracy, facts and sanity.
From Bill Maher's website transcripts of Real Time with Bill Maher:
MOS DEF: [overlapping] You know…you know, coercion apparatus – one is endorsed by the state and the other is not. You know, when the Revolutionary War was going on, George Washington and all them dudes was terrorists-
MAHER: Yes.
MOS DEF: [overlapping]-as far as the queen was concerned.
MAHER: Right, right.
MOS DEF: So, it’s like – it’s – you know, it’s the difference between what’s legal and what’s fair and decent and, you know, just, on the universal sense. I mean, I hear the whole thing-
MAHER: But, you don’t want to get blown up by a bomb.
MOS DEF: I don’t think I’m going to get blown up – listen, I’m black in America. I live under constant pressure. I don’t believe in that boogie man [bleep]. Them – they ain’t doing [bleep]. You know, I don’t believe in that [bleep]. If somebody wants to do some [bleep] to you, it ain’t – they doin’ it! Them [bleep] ain’t talking about it, sending you tapes: “I’m gonna [bleep] you up when I see you!” [laughter] [applause] You hear what I’m saying? Man, somebody wants to get you, they’re gonna get you!
WEST: [overlapping] They’re just gonna do it. They’re gonna do it.
MOS DEF: [overlapping] And you’re gonna feel – they ain’t gonna send you no damn video messages: “Yeah, [bleep], it’s me!” [laughter] No, I don’t believe that [bleep]. It’s – the [bleep] that [bleep] be passin’ off. I don’t believe that was Bin Laden today. I don’t believe it was never him. I think it’s some dude just standing – I don’t even – I can’t even believe-
MAHER: [overlapping] Come on.
MOS DEF: [overlapping]-I don’t – I’m sorry. I’m from the projects. I know danger. [laughter] I don’t feel no danger from that [bleep]. These [bleep]-
MAHER: [overlapping] But, you don’t think Bin Laden knocked down the World Trade Center?
MOS DEF: Absolutely not!
MAHER: Come on.
MOS DEF: I don’t. I don’t. [applause]
MAHER: [overlapping] You know what? That’s where you lose me, my friend.
MOS DEF: [overlapping] You know, I don’t. Listen-
MAHER: [overlapping] And I’m so on your side. But, you know what?
MOS DEF: [overlapping]-you go to – you go to any barbershop, I am so not alone. I am so not alone. [laughter] [applause]
MAHER: That doesn’t mean you’re right.
MOS DEF: [overlapping] That don’t mean-
MAHER: [overlapping] That don’t mean you’re right. [voices overlap]
MOS DEF: [overlapping] It don’t mean it is not valid, neither. Science – highly-educated people in all areas of science have spoken on the fishiness around that whole 9/11 theory. It’s like the magic bullet and all that [bleep].
MAHER: And what – and what happened?
MOS DEF: I don’t believe these [bleep] been to the moon, neither. But that’s just me. [laughter] [applause] [voices overlap]
WEST: [overlapping] Brother Bill-
MOS DEF: [overlapping]-get into a whole big thing about it.
MAHER: And I will rest my case with your statement. [laughter]
So [bleep] Mos Def.
... [laughter]

And that was, going away, the best work he's ever done. In any media.
He's a mental lightweight of last order and a semi-talent. But he hates Bush - and so he sells records. Must be good management because I doubt he could have figured that out on his own.

Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock.
Mos Def sounds like a complete idiot! LOL. Unbelievable! However, it's not up to me, you, or anyone else to reference his literary or verbal skills (or political views for that matter) as a means to define his artistic abilities. I don't have to know the man personally to any degree to know that he still writes, performs, and creates music hence an artist by practical definition. Not to mention a millionaire *wink*
... the same way my son was when he was finger-painting with his own poop at the age of 12-months.
Difference is, my son grew out of it.
YMMV.

Glad we were living in a rental at the time.

Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock.
Sure, that's one way to look at it docj. Enlighten me if you will; in your opinion, what defines art? Is it something that is enjoyed by the masses? Must it be politically correct? Must the artist's personality be favorable to the people? Does the artist have to display a certain level of intellect? Are we to consider the artist more than we consider his art? Or is it just anything BUT rap? This is extremely intriging.
And it's not nearly as "intriging" as you think it is.
Ta.

Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie' until you can find a rock.
Not so much his music, doc, but your opinions of it is what "intrigues" me. For the record, I'm not a Mos Def fan AT ALL.

and it don't include p*ss in a jar and cricifix, or dung on a Vergin Mary -- you know -- modern-type art.
Them's just a few thoughts off the top of my mind of what art ain't. Maybe you think different, but then again, sombudy buys that s**t, so if you wanna waste your money -- go to it!

You're not trying to offend anyone with that are you? lol. Again, art is to be interpreted. There is no guideline or rule book, you either like or dislike. You don't need a diploma or degree to be an artist, no one even has to agree with or like what you do, but you are still an artist. There is art that costs $5 and art that costs $5 million, all art. To me that's what makes the best artists! You see, whether we like it or not, controversy draws ridicule which is attention none the less. Mission accomplished if you ask me.
I've been down this road already. It ain't ebonics, it's Hicklish.

So as not to kill him and not put out his eye. Talent or practice or both. It was not unreasonable to charge 6 lynchers jumping on one person when they knock him unconscious from behind, then kick him in the head and eye. That they did not kill him is no more relevant that someone that shoots a gun at someone and misses.

Becker, I'm getting a feminine vibe from you. It looks like you have very successfully weasled your way into the negative part of this conversation. *applause* You stand out the most because you are the last one to weigh down this band wagon which lacks any significant cause. Why are people so drawn to negativity on the internet? Judging by your comments, you have GOT to be one of those people who walks with your head down and hopes to avoid a confrontation of any kind. You probably get pushed around and avoids social events. My degree(s) being worthless is something you could never prove from some paragraphs, however, you've just shown that you are actually the epitome of cowardice. Why don't you try forming your own opinion about the subject at hand? You probably do this all day long jumping from website to website seeking bandwagons. Pathetic.
Trying to cause outrage are we?

Your BS came with alot of bs, but didn't include Internet 101, apparently. Try navigating (that means click on some links) to other threads. You'll notice something amazing occurring, called discussion.
The way it works is, one person says something, then another person replies, and so on. It's very similar to a concept you may be familiar with called "taking turns", but with sentences rather than bong hits. (Have I used that joke before?)
