On John Shadegg
A Brave Conservative Heads Home

There have been a number of retirements from the halls of Congress over the past few months, but we would be remiss if we did not pause to note the surprising retirement of Arizona Congressman John Shadegg.
Shadegg has been, without mincing words, a conservative hero since his election in 1994. He has fought the left as a consistent spokesman for the values that we espouse at Redstate, a brave leader against liberal statism across all fronts, and a forceful behind-the-scenes advocate for a consistent and courageous conservatism that is grounded in a strong understanding of human nature and what makes America great. For years, he has been a pitch-perfect note in the Southwest for the ideals we cherish as a community.
We have supported Shadegg in the past, including when he stood for a leadership post in 2006. For the first time since Redstate began, we cannot support him in this decision. We would, if we could, beg Shadegg to continue the work he began in 1994, with the insurgent spirit he never lost. We would, if we could, beg John McCain to follow the Dole '96 playbook and resign, opening up a Senate appointment for Shadegg to continue to serve. We would, if we could, beg John Shadegg to stay in Washington, and fight the good fight once more, until it is won.
Yet it seems his decision is made, and we must unfortunately deal with a House that is missing one truly great warrior for the cause.
As for replacements: We know Rep. Shadegg's Chief of Staff, Sean Noble, to be a smart, dedicated, and particularly adept conservative. We hope that he will consider throwing his hat into the ring to replace the man he has served so well. And we hope that in any case, John Shadegg will remain an active leader of the conservative movement in the years to come. We wish him and his family Godspeed, and only the best for their future, with lasting thanks for his many years of honorable service to the country he loves.

forcing out the conservatives... Not a good future to look forward to.

that the flood of retirements is nowhere near ending. This does not bode well for the GOP.
Fighting for conservatism one day at a time.
We are losing a lot of good talent. It seems those who actually lead, as opposed to those who talk about it, do not see a lot of good results coming our way in the near term.

I like it.

Now that McCain has the virtual lock on the nomination, Shadegg resigns. The first approximation guess is that he's going to be named to some office in the McCain administration.
That'd be fantastic!

Congressman Shadegg has been a highly principled and highly effective legislator. He was a model conservative who can hold his head high as he rides off into the Arizona sunset. Although, I have a sneaking (and hopeful) suspicion we'll see him again in a more significant role. Like Obi Wan, he will come back more even more powerful.
Hats off to The Directors for this send off.
Sean would be a good replacement.
will be greatly missed. I have followed his career since he was elected in 1994. He is a true conservative.
I hope there is someone as great as he is to take his place.
I just wish he could have gotten the leadership position that he was seeking, then maybe he would have stayed.
It is going to be very difficult for the Republicans to pick up any seats in the house.
I'm not totally familiar with how the process works in AZ - I gather that state law requires Gov. Napolitano to pick a GOP successor, but I don't know how that process would translate into her taking a conservative star like Shadegg.
That said, I would love the game of chicken aspect to McCain quitting. At his age, it's a reasonable gamble to push the chips to the center of the table and bet it all on winning the White House, at the price of retiring to a quiet life as a weekly guest on Meet the Press. But doing that would put a lot of pressure on the D nominee to quit too - and Hillary and Obama would both prefer to be able to fall back on spending decades more in the Senate. (Although if Obama wins the nomination and loses the general his smart move is to run for IL-GOV in 2010 and wait for 2016 before going national again - the Nixon playbook, except that unlike Nixon he would win the GOV race).

How long would Napolitano have to replace him? Just thinking about votes during that time.
