Guess who warned Obama back in 1985 about the likely backlash of joining that Church ?

Promoted by Jeff, and added to the "Obamafiles" category. Look below the fold for the results of some pretty good research.

His kibitzer warned him 23 years ago about the possible repercussions of joining his church. Senator Obama has often referred to Reverend Wright as his Spiritual mentor and role model. Outside of his mother and wife it's Wright that has been the closest to him. He is his father figure or at least it seems that way.

In his 1993 memoir Dreams from My Father Obama recounts in vivid detail his first meeting with Wright in 1985. The pastor warned the community activist that getting involved with Trinity might turn off other black clergy because of the church's radical reputation.

Reverend Wright expanded the Black liberation theology which his mentor Rev. James Cone introduced in 1968. So clearly Rev. Cone was the key to understanding their belief system. Instead of the usual spin doctor analyses I think perhaps its better to see what the Reverends Cone and Wright have to say in the papers.

Africentric Church: A Visit to Chicago's Trinity UCC Magazine article by Jason Byassee;

The Christian Century, Vol. 124, May 29, 2007.

There is no denying, however, that a strand of radical black political theology influences Trinity. James Cone, the pioneer of black liberation theology, is a much-admired figure at Trinity. Cone told me that when he's asked where his theology is institutionally embodied, he always mentions Trinity. Cone's groundbreaking 1969 book Black Theology and Black Power announced: "The time has come for white America to be silent and listen to black people.... All white men are responsible for white oppression.... Theologically, Malcolm X was not far wrong when he called the white man 'the devil.'... Any advice from whites to blacks on how to deal with white oppression is automatically under suspicion as a clever device to further enslavement." Contending that the structures of a still-racist society need to be dismantled, Cone is impatient with claims that the race situation in America has improved. In a 2004 essay he wrote, "Black suffering is getting worse, not better.... White supremacy is so clever and evasive that we can hardly name it. It claims not to exist, even though black people are dying daily from its poison" (in Living Stones in the Household of God).

Wright agrees. When I asked him whether white Americans are right to maintain that the racial situation has improved since the days when Africentric Christianity was born, Wright pointed to the racist remarks by radio host Don Imus: "And you say things have improved?"

I know nothing about Black liberation theology or hardly any theology for that matter. I personally still think Obama probably got involved with Wright to advance his political career more than anything else.

Obama's women reveal his secret

"Cherchez la femme," advised Alexander Dumas in: "When you want to uncover an unspecified secret, look for the woman." In the case of Barack Obama, we have two: his late mother, the went-native anthropologist Ann Dunham, and his rancorous wife Michelle. Obama's women reveal his secret: he hates America.

The probable next president of the United States is a mother's revenge against the America she despised.

Ann Dunham died in 1995, and her character emerges piecemeal from the historical record, to which I will return below. But Michelle Obama is a living witness. Her February 18 comment that she felt proud of her country for the first time caused a minor scandal, and was hastily qualified. But she meant it, and more. The video footage of her remarks shows eyes hooded with rage as she declares:

For the first time in my adult lifetime, I am really proud of my country and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change. And I have been desperate to see our country moving in that direction and just not feeling so alone in my frustration and disappointment.

I decided to check it out anyway. It appears pretty clear cut to me what it's about. After all it's in their own words they said it themselves. These guys are no different than the white dudes that join Aryan Nations. It's all identical. No good on either side.

out of town today and didn't have time to get alot of other stuff in the story. Things like the connections between wright , cone and the old black panther party

And if only the American people would realize you can never get something for nothing.

Great find, Bat. Make sure it finds it's way to Hillary and John's camps, please.

Pay no attention to that church he attends in Chicago, Jeremiah is retiring. All will be well now that Otis is in charge. Seriously guys, he's the one we have been waiting for.

Ooops! Better tell Otis about that unity thingy.

Very interesting info about Obama's Mother's political views and the political environment he was raised in.

If what is reported in the Asia Times link, that needs to be looked into much more thoroughly. The political views prevalent in the house you were raised in matter.

Obama may survive this but.. by nomorenannystate

the Wright scandal has certainly given a boost to McCain. Obama's squeaky clean image has been tarnished by his association with Wright, polls are indicating that independents are skittish about him now and will likely rally around McCain, and his preacher's heated rhetoric has offended even Obama's most ardent supports. My hunch if Obama survives the primary he will have a difficult road in the general because Wright will haunt him.

I have harbored doubts about McCain but his integrity is beyond reproach. My only worry now is that McCain will neglect conservatives in favor of courting independents.

Obama scares me too by David123

What makes him tick? He does not seem that grounded.

Does he really believe all the hateful nonsense that gets preached at his church? If he does, that is scary.

Go read the Asia Times link.
They make the point that it was "in his mother's milk". After reading the article, there is some truth to that crazy statement, IMO. YMMV.

The Wright scandal will make it easy for 527s to run hard hitting ads with endless loops of his sermons. I think moderates and independents will be frightened off by Wright's words making McCain more attractive to those voters.

I fear Hilary more now because she is a notoriously nasty campaigner and she has a "take no prisioners" style. I'm worried that Rush's "operation chaos" might backfire and we really do get Hilary against McCain. Frankly, I think McCain would have an easier time beating Obama now.

It doesn't matter.

Not in the slightest. The democrats have driven themselves mad. They assumed this year was theirs and started to fight amongst themselves over which of their privileged groups would have the payday. Well they have spent so much effort trying to divide the spoils, there are none

As this campaign marches its way to Puerto Rico they will be pitting their identities off against each other in ever more vicious fashion. No matter what happens neither will have enough delegates to win, and both will have a case that they are the real winner.

with or without Rush. Dems victims of their own multiculti insanity. Couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch.

You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.

Most conservatives value fair play and an honest game. When we take that attitude with the libs, its like we have tied both hands behind our backs. Rush was invaluable, he gave us the OK to go fight and win.

I have to say hats off to all the Republican candidates. Once again our party has shown how politics should be conducted

I believe that the current democrat situation is going to leave the eventual winner in poor shape to start the general campaign. I heard that Obama's negatives are now about as high as Clinton's. Regardless of who wins, the loser's supporters will be very unhappy & demoralized.

What about the un"oppressed" black people? Does He side with them, too?

How racist.

All politics are tribal on the mother continent and there are usually no clean hands in them.

James 2:1 "My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don't show favortism....

James 2:8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself", you are doing right. But if you show favortism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.

I suspect that Reverend Wright did not spend much time studying the book of James.

The struggle is for us to see others as God sees us -- not the condition of our skin, but the condition of our hearts.

I suspect that Reverend Wright might have some darkness within his heart.

Cone-heads by Tom Bombadil

There needs to be much more reportage on Cone and his poisoning of many African American theological seminaries over the past 40 years. What Wright is preaching, while not the predominate ideology being preached in African American churches, is not exactly rare.

We saw a lot of manifestations of this back after Hurricane Katrina and at other times when there was visceral anger displayed in the pulpits of these so-called "liberation" theology pulpits.

Wright explicitly endorsed Cone during the infamous interview with Sean Hannity. If Cone is Wright's mentor, then there needs to be more investigation of Cone. What I've read thus far is shocking. I don't usually recommend Wikipedia, but if you Wiki "James Hal Cone," you will see this quote:

Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community. . . . Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.

Rev. Wright is toxic; his toxicity comes, in part, from James H. Cone. The Cone story must get publicized because it transcends mere politics. It is racial hatred, pure and simple.

Pastor Wright did not drop out of sight because he was forced. He knew he had to for Berry to get elected. Then he can pop back in the picture.

white guilt ... by scotchex

From what I've read of Wright and Cone, it seems that they believe that all white people for all time are collectively guilty of oppression and slavery. I think that's why he wants to claim Jesus was black and stresses that the Romans were white.

It's the same perverted idea of collective guilt that lies behind so much anti-semitism -- it's no accident Wright tries to label whites as Christ-killers.

That's just scary thinking that a future President could imbibe that type of rhetoric and not be repulsed. I think Wright honestly believes that a white man today bears just as much guilt for slavery as a white slave-owner in 1840. I think Wright actually perceives my family and all my loved ones as the enemy.

This honestly seems to me no different than an Aryan Nation style church. If Obama were white, and a member of a "white liberation" church, he would have been forced to resign from the Senate already. You can't hold elective office and be a member of the Aryan Nation -- even if you just are there for the AIDS outreach and after-school programs.

It is amazing and sad to me that our first black President seems likely to come not from the Martin Luther King Jr tradition, but from the Malcolm X tradition.

The new polls coming out of Kentucky has John McCain up 36% points against Barack Obama. Sounda kinda high I admit but still it's pretty telling. Bill Clinton *did* win this state in '92 and '96.
