SEIU

Republicans and conservatives, take heart. This isn't about Hillary and Barack, though admittedly their struggle fits the title too. And it is precisely because of their bloody battle that was not supposed to be that this other battle on Democrat front lines is so exciting to watch and savor.
Just a few weeks ago I blogged about the SEIU crackup. It's pretty basic to understand.
Andy Stern, the SEIU President, wants to grow union numbers. To do so, others in the union accuse him of compromising core union values and worker protections. To get corporations to go union without a fight, Stern is compromising on all sorts of worker protections, from healthcare to collective bargaining. Stern is nonplussed because the larger the union, the more money it gets to fund Democrat candidates, and the more money it gets to lobby.
Blue collar has become blue pin-striped tailored suits.
And some people within the SEUI are really hacked off. One of those is Sal Rosselli, formerly of the SEIU Executive Board. Rosselli has been beating the bush against Stern
accusing Stern of consolidating power in the hands of his allies while marginalizing other elected leaders. He also alleges that Stern has cut deals with corporate leaders to grow SEIU's rolls at the expense of current members' contracts.
Stern is now firing back.
Andy Stern, president of the Washington-headquartered Service Employees International Union, sent a letter on Monday - obtained by The Chronicle - that alleges misconduct by Sal Rosselli, president of the Oakland-based United Healthcare Workers West, who has been Stern's most vocal critic.
Rosselli and other leaders of the union - which has 150,000 members, many of them in the Bay Area - said the allegations appear to be a prelude to a trusteeship, under which Stern would replace the union's elected leaders with his own appointees.
In essence, Stern is accusing Rosselli of doing exactly what Stern did nationally with voter education efforts. But now, Stern alleges the actions violate labor laws.
In June, all of the SEIU folks are getting together for a convention in Puerto Rico. Rosselli will have the second largest group there. This could be just as fun to watch as the Democratic National Convention.

Although, I too agree it is great fun to watch.

...for instance the carpenters' union, and I actually don't think that the electricians are bad either. What I have a problem with are unions like the AFL-CIO and especially government unions like the SEIU. Those organizations are basically extensions of the Democrat party, and they force their members to fund their activities.

I'll be low bidder, because I use non-union workers exclusively, due to the higher quality of their work.

Gone 2500 years, still not PC.
I'm from Washington State. SEIU is pure evil. They are the socialists to end all socialists.
Let's put it this way: In 2004, they ran a primary opponent against the longest serving member of the State House, a hardcore, very liberal D from downtown Seattle, because she had the unmitigated gull to tell them that they weren't going to be able to give them quite all of the money they had asked for because there was a budget crunch.
They lost that challenge, barely, but it shows just how nuts they are.

The quest for personal power, specifically for the ability to lord over others with that power, is at the root of this. The desire for influence - not to help others succeed but for personal aggrandizement. We've heard the old chestnut "power corrupts, & absolute power corrupts absolutely." I'd say that the quest for persona power for its own sake also corrupts.
Why Obama must be nominated:
Gallup showed that in a general election, Clinton voters would go for Obama over McCain, 59-28%.
Obama voters would go for Clinton 72-19%.
I've always thought we'd make greater inroads with the white, Hillary voters than the kooky, fanatical Obama voters. This poll bears that out.
As I point out here, the AFL-CIO & AFSCME are telling their member locals not to contribute to Minnesota's DFL AG because she's been accused of harrassing attorneys who are trying to organize a union in the AG's office.

This is nothing new, the union officials for years have been wanting to grow ranks at the cost of the members. I suppose wanting to return to the heyday of the 1970's with the numbers of dues paying members (the heart of the matter).
As far as I am concerned, the need for and the applicability of unions has long past. The era of managers forcing employees to undertake hazardous work conditions as a matter of continued employment no longer exists. The federal government, for good or bad has replaced the need for union protections. Besides, those collective bargaining activities has doomed the American auto companies and every worker involved.
Note: I have not nor ever have been involved with unions with 1 exception. A project in St. Louis I was managing used non-union electricians (because their price was 84% higher then the non-union bid) and subsequently was harassed by the local electricians union because of it.
