The President Americans Have Been Waiting For

The Democrats Call McCain's Military Service Opportunistic

By California Yankee Posted in | | Comments (38) / Email this page » / Leave a comment »

As Hillary and Obama continue their ever more negative fight to challenge Senator John McCain for the presidency, McCain launched the first TV ad of the fall campaign.

The ad highlights McCain's experience, character and optimistic vision for our future:

JOHN MCCAIN: Keep that faith. Keep your courage. Stick together. Stay strong. Do not yield. Stand up. We're Americans. And we'll never surrender.

ANNCR: What must a president believe about us? About America?

That she is worth protecting?

That liberty is priceless?

Our people, honorable?

Our future, prosperous, remarkable and free?

And, what must we believe about that president?

What does he think?

Where has he been?

Has he walked the walk?

You can watch the ad below:

Read on. There's more.

You can tell the ad hit home by Howard Dean's reaction. Dean, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, calls John McCain an opportunist for using images of his military service:

While we honor McCain's military service, the fact is Americans want a real leader who offers real solutions, not a blatant opportunist who doesn't understand the economy and is promising to keep our troops in Iraq for 100 years."

Dean is so worried by the contrast of the Republican nominee to be, looking very presidential, while the Democratic presidential wannabees are engaging in nothing but senseless negativity, he told CBS News that the superdelegates need to decide whether Hillary or Obama gets the Democratic nomination before July. Dean wants to avoid the appearance that the Democratic nominee was chosen in a back room deal by party insiders even though that is exactly what they will do. And Dean has the nerve to call McCain an "opportunist."

McCain needs to start laying out how Obama's own words are simply made up speeches. How his advisors are clueless, anti-Israel and anti-American victory. How they are socialists and even marxist in their ideology.

Obama is Jimmy Carter- only without the sweater.

McCain has already made it clear that he's not going to engage in personal attacks or character assassination.

So if Republicans want that sort of low-blow stuff, they'll have to resort to "527" groups and their ads to make those points.

I think what he can do, is question some of the statements that some of Obama's advisers have made. In particular, Samantha Power's statement that "we need to go where the [Muslim] people are" and address their needs to discourage them from becoming terrorists. What if "where the [Muslim] people are" is that they want to drive Jews and Christians and gays out of their land? Should we go along with that?

capital "O" on that word.

is an oxymoron isn't it?

"The Democrats Call McCain's Military Service Opportunistic"

How can you be so sure he's referring to McCain's military service as being opportunistic?

Certainly he's been called 'that name' before for other reasons:

http://www.theconservativevoice.com/article/30563.html

As for the ad, I thought it was great...but my opinion is obviously worth less than a grain of salt hear so that's all I'll say about that...

and now he isn't even comprehending what he is reading before he spouts.

Are you being nice because it is Friday or did I miss something?

Which is pretty much why I'm home.

Anyway, psugrad: if you want to keep posting here, go directly here and type out "c17wife, I'm sorry that I directly insulted you." You're only getting this much slack because it's my birthday, which means that I'm in an uncommonly good mood at the moment.

Don't spoil it by arguing, or trying to explain. Just do it.

one thing before the lancing commences...

I don't agree with the label of 'opportunist' for McCain at all for any of those reasons- I for one think he actually believes he's "doing the right thing" when he votes the way he does- just don't necessarily agree that Dean was referring to McCain's military service when he called him an "opportunist". Sorry for not explaining that earlier.

putting an ad out now makes him look like the big kid on the block, while the two Dems bicker and squabble. Maybe Dean should not let his folks provide the opportunity in the first place?

As a Fredhead, I am starting to consider calling the local GOP office and joining John's team. Nothing can unite the GOP like seeing Hillary or Barrack on the other side.

Fitting and Commanding by loozianajay

It' a very powerful piece. It say's a lot without having to walk you through it. It delivers and people will just get "it".

I say he swung at the first pitch on opening day, and sent it right up the middle.

But he needs to put some stuff out there that says what he's going to DO not just who he is.

Agreed by loozianajay

Like I said, he "sent it right up the middle." It wasn't a homerun but it certainly set the stage. As much as I have been against McCain, he'll be tough to beat in the general election and it's because of his story, like this commerical hits, that will give him the "when it gets down to it" edge. McCain will win in November.

...but he's our guy now and has my time, money and full support. Love this ad, chokes me up.

Is that Powers Boothe narrating the ad?

So does that mean Boothe has "come out" as a Hollywood conservative?
Hope he has a good agent.

If McCain is an "opportunist", what, exactly would Dean call a man who joined the Navy Reserve because he couldn't get a deferment, was sent home early from the combat zone because of the awarding of Purple Hearts that has been credibly been called into question, who immediately disavowed his service, worked against combat soldiers still in the field, and threw his medals away, and, yet, when he ran for president spoke and referred endlessly to his service - to the exclusion of the entire rest of his career?

Or has that entire campaign been flushed down the memory hole?

John Kerry's whole service career smelled of opportunism. You have to respect that he went there and did the job, but you certainly don't have to respect his apparent motivations based on his actions and conduct upon returning.

John McCain was a stand-up guy and was more than generous with defending Kerry when he didn't deserve it. Democrats can't now go after McCain by denigrating him for his service.

McCain's service, especially his service as a POW, goes right to the HEART in terms of qualities desired in a president. McCain has walked the walk. He knows what pain is. He knows the cost of war, and the pain of losing one. Not only is his service not out of bounds, but it actually IS very much in-bounds.

McCain looked extremely presidential. I'm more and more convinced that McCain is going to positively shellac HillObama in November. I predict McCain takes California. I'm glad to jump on the bandwagon and encourage others to do the same.

No way. by Neil Stevens

The only way McCain takes California is if there's a huge third party boost somewhere, as in 10-20% of the vote going to Nader or someone. I don't see that happening.

That or he announces he's pro-abort. I don't see that happening either.

A Good Ad by gpurcell

What is interesting to me is that this ad is aimed squarely at Obama, even to the extent of recycling some of Hillary's talking points (e.g., "Ready on Day One).

More than anything it shows the damage caused to Obama by Wright. All of the core message points of McCain--a patriot who suffered for a country he loved, etc--just line up beautifully against "God Damn America" and the "US of KKK A."

Good ad by peg c

This is the stuff McCain needs to stress. The fact that it gets Dean's knickers in a twist is a big bonus (or likely no accident). The thing to remember about Dems is Republicans who served are warmongers and opportunists, and Republicans who didn't serve are Chickenhawks. Dems used to "admire" McCain but it was never his service and POW history that they admired. McCain should play it up for all it's worth.

And mega dittos to CVN and tankertodd who nail the true and shameless opportunist, Jf'nK.

You may not be interested in war, but war is interested in you.

BTW, did Psugrad ever apologize to c17wife?

Is that supposition or do you have some facts to support your statement? If what you are saying is true, I would not be "Okay with that." I would, however, need to see some concrete evidence first. Given that McCain has been in the public eye for decades and run for President more than once, I would think that this would have come out before now.

John McCain divorced his first wife after she was disfigured in a car accident. Are you guys OK with that?

I don't want to encourage the thread jack, but McCain divorced his wife 11 years after her car accident (I know of no evidence that she was "disfigured") and her and McCain are still close. Had he divorced her because she got in a car accident it would be unseemly, but there is no credible case for causation between the two events. So yeah, I'm still "OK" with McCain. Although I'm not OK with ridiculous off topic digressions.
