"McCain has been told to knock it off."

So says Bob Novak in his weekly newsletter, Evans-Novak Political Report:
McCain has yet to show that he understands the role of a presidential nominee. He still sometimes acts like a back-bench senator, as when he ordered the North Carolina Republican Party to take an ad off the air (a request that ought to have been made by Republican National Chairman Mike Duncan). McCain has been told to knock it off.
Told by whom? No one has the authority to demand much of anything of the nominee, and with this nominee, I'd hate to be the guy who tried.

I wish I knew who. I'd send them a thank you note.
Surely wouldn't have been Fred. No I mean that, really. I don't think Fred would be in a position to be giving *anybody* advice on 'how to be a presidential candidate'.
Still, interesting timing.

have to have beeen advice on "how to be a presidential candidate." Could well have been advice on how "not to lose the general by p*ssing off the base." Fred is fully capable of delivering that message to his friend and collegue.

Mrs. Roberta McCain?
he probably means that Bob Novak told him.

I very much doubt it was the case. I'm assuming what happened was someone @ the RNC told the McCain staff, and they broke it to him as gently as possible.

Giving gentle advice. Maybe they got Bob Dole to do the job.
