Nancy Pelosi's House strikes a blow against Higher Ed

Who knew Nancy Pelosi was a closet conservative? Through her own inaction she has let the Higher Education Act expire.

The Senate had passed a one month extension while they work out details, but Nancy never bothered to do the same. Consequently, the legislation expired. The impact won't be substantial because of other laws, but a number of advisory committees, etc. no longer exist.

Well done!

Amen to that. by c17wife

Given the mix of Congress going into this next election, I pray for gridlock and inaction. It's better than socialism.

What will they do without the Committees?

Don't laugh. They'll turn to trade unions and yoof groups. ;)

"What will they do without the Committees?"

They might have to spend time teaching.

Yeah, I had a straight face when I typed that and shrugged.

Much like John Kerry's terms, just think what kind of damage might have been done if he was actually ambitious.

Let's not jump on the "Nancy Pelosi did a good thing" bandwagon so soon. There is always a reason why people do what they do. We need to look a key provision added to the bill in 1998:

Also in the amendments of 1998 is the Aid Elimination Provision, which prevents students with drug charges from receiving federal aid for colleges and universities. This is where question 31 on the FAFSA forms originates from. The question asks if the student has ever been convicted of a drug crime while receiving federal financial aid. If the answer is "Yes" or the question is left blank, the student is denied aid. There is currently a case supported by the ACLU going against this provision, titled SSDP vs. Spellings.

A blow the big government? Unlikely. Nancy Pelosi killed an entire Act, just to go after provision that put limits on federal financial aid. A provision both the ACLU and SSDP have been trying to kill.

I thought you guys were smarter in catching this kind of stuff?

John McCain for 2008!

My understanding by Erick

Is that this provision also exists in other laws that aren't expiring.

Fight On!

I can't think a worse policy when it comes to rehabilitating former drug users then telling them they can't go to college and better their lives. Keeping them in their job at McDonalds is going to do nothing but keep them in poverty and give them no incentive to change.

Most people don't act responsible until they actually have something to lose, not when there is the possibility of losing something in the future they don't have now.

Of course, I don't think anyone should receive taxpayer money to invest in themselves so they can earn more money, but if we are going to dole out money, then it should go to everyone.

Have you added to the population of the McCain 2008 minicity yet today?

Cuz he sure is persona non grata in Dallas now.

Hence Pelosi is not a conservative, just a dumb liberal - a pleonasm. But I reckon that clueless liberals are better than smart liberals - ok, an oxymoron, but you get it.

Is this an open thread? If not, I apologize for the thread-jacking, but this article from P. J. O'Rourke is a must-read:

http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/015/006dgr...

"Conservatism is also a matter of honor, duty, valor, patriotism, self-discipline, responsibility, good order, respect for our national institutions, reverence for the traditions of civilization, and adherence to the political honesty upon which all principles of democracy are based. Given what screw-ups we humans are in these respects, conservatism is also a matter of sense of humor. Heard any good quips lately from Hillary or Barack?"
