The Audacity of Prep
Barack Obama is lying about those "humble beginnings"

Last night on ABC, Barack Obama said:
My upbringing was much more reflective of what working class black and whites go through than John McCain's background being raised as the son of an admiral in boarding schools or Hillary Clinton out in the suburbs of Park Ridge.
Ummmm. What is he talking about? Take, for example, his high school. The Chicago Tribune said this:
As much as young Obama stood out physically in the classrooms of Indonesia, so, too, did he at Punahou School, the elite private prep academy his mother moved him back to Hawaii to attend.
A MyDD diarist doesn't buy the narrative about his mom:
Barack's mother has been described as naive and a free-spirited beatnik (who found the dough to get a PHD). She is praised as a single parent after divorcing two men in 6 years, then sending her son Barack to Honolulu to be raised by her mother who was a bank vice president.
How do you square an "elite private prep academy" and being raised by a "bank vice president" with "what working class black and whites go through"?
Maybe it's all just fake

Speaking from memory, Bill was standard middle class, but Hillary's dad was rather wealthy.
Wasn't daddy basically an abusive drunk??
Hillary Clinton's upbringing always struck me as pretty typical 1950s middle class though... Perhaps, comfortable upper middle class, but not rolling in money.
Is this the same grandmother who occasionally utters racist comments?
Meh, it's only natural that he'd respond to accusations of elitism by attempting to point out that he is, if not a commoner, at least closer to average than his opponents. I think though that the days are long gone when one could become president of the USA without a silver spoon of some form or another.
Still, this could come back to bite him in the ass come November. But I don't think McCain will be able to beat up on this issue personally given his own background.
The one that was thrown under the bus?
On McCain, where Obama is really going is character over privilege and McCain will run circles around him on that one. Obama likes to pretend he had to overcome great adversity, but he can't hold a candle to McCain in that area. McCain will gladly go there with him on that one.

McCain was out of the Naval Academy before his dad was an Admiral. When McCain was, say, nine years old, his dad was a submarine captain.

Give me a break!
Those Obama girls are growing up way more affluent and elitist than my children ever will. And my children's father actually work for a living!

...when Barack had to go to the sound studio and record his book-on-tape? Does that count as time served in the real world?

he is today and that man is a leftist loving marxist....we cannot allow him to continue to act as if who you are is based on your upbringing goodness he is in his 40's and McCain is in his 70's....it's called being a grown up and becoming theperson you should be not the person your parents wanted or willed you to be.

But doesn't Clinton really have the more conventional middle class upbringing? Obama wasn't some poor kid born to a destitute teenage mother although he likes to pretend that he was.. Mommy was a hippie who basically abandoned Obama with grandma while she pranced around the world.
As for grandma, she must be a saint. I'm not sure that many mothers would be happy about raising their daughters' children in such a fashion. My mom would definitely demand that I take responsibility for the situation as she already raised one child.
