The Path Back to the Majority

As I've stated a few places, all they really need to do for now is do the five things that we've been saying for a long time:

1) Make the tax cuts permanent
2) Cut spending
3) Win the war
4) Fight for judges
5) Secure the borders

Add in, #6 and #7:

6) Reduce energy costs
7) Help with the housing situation

Now, you might be saying, how do you do that in the minority?

Well, you do what Newt did in 1994 and what the Dems did in 2006: You promise stuff (NOTE: If you actually deliver what you promise, you get to stay longer).

So what would I do if I was Boehner. Each point supports one of the above.

1) Point out that the Dems are going to make your taxes go up by over $2000 per year because they won't make the tax cuts permanent. Make it a part of your speech. "If you want higher taxes, keep the Democrats in the majority because they have refused to make Bushs tax cuts permanent."

2) (stolen from Newt) -- Get Bush to agree to veto anything with earmarks in it and get the GOP house to agree to sustain the vetos.

3) Point out that the Dems are not funding the troops. If you an incumbant, point it out in every town meeting. If you are a challenger, hold town meetings of your own MID WEEK while your Dem counterparts are stuck in Washington and say it over and over again.

4) Judges is mostly a Senate thing. What you want to do here if you are running for Senate is point out the AMOUNT OF TIME THAT PEOPLE IN YOUR DISTRICT have to wait to get their court decisions heard because the Dems are blocking Bushes judges.

5) Announce a plan to secure the borders and penalize business and illegals. Take the plans that Arizona and Georgia are using and take their best points. Say that any state that doesn't have some plan like that in place loses 20% of federal highway money starting in 2010.

6) Point out that nuclear energy would be the fastest way to cut greenhouse gases and reduce energy costs. Set up a fast track for documentation and set up interest free loans.

7) I don't know a lot about housing, but I did see an interesting idea a while back where the governement would offer up to $100K in very low interest loans that would have to be used in a refinance situation. If someone has the link or a link to what I thought said something like that, please post it in the comments.

Adopt Pro-Growth Economic policies that create jobs. Emphisize Growth, progress, and jobs for American workers. Slam that home.

Show how the new GI Bill will help growth. Ask Larry Kudlow. Growth, growth, growth and King Dollar!

Feldstein proposed having the government offer "low-interest" loans to replace up to 20% of a borrowers primary mortgage. It can be found here.

Unfortunately, Feldstein's plan was shown to be incredibly stupid here.

Sadly, the truth is that either the government is going to bail out a lot of folks who made poor/uninformed decisions when they got their mortgage, encouraging more poor decision-making (not to mention keeping home prices artificially high in many regions), or it won't, people will lose their homes, and the government will be blamed for inaction.
