Anatomy of a Train Wreck - Too Bad It's Another Republican

After my blog today about the need to get to work at home, this comes on the news this afternoon.
Rep. Vito Fossella (R-New York)was arrested for DWI last week following a party at an area Hotel. This followed the visit to the White House by the Super Bowl Champion Giants.
A problem, but not a major one, however during his conversation with the police he mentioned he was going to see his daughter. Well, this was in Virginia, the opposite direction from New York.
Wellllllll, it seems he was talking about his secret daughter, born out of wedlock and only 3 years old. Back in Staten Island he has a beautiful family, wife and three lovely daughters.
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- Rep. Vito Fossella (R-New York) released the following statement through his public relations consultant:
“I have had a relationship with Laura Fay, with whom I have a three year old daughter.
My personal failings and imperfections have caused enormous pain to the people I love and I am truly sorry.
While I understand that there will be many questions, including those about my political future, making any political decisions right now are furthest from my mind.
Over the coming weeks and months, I will to continue to do my job and I will work hard to heal the deep wounds I have caused.”

Any hope of holding it?

But Vito won 57-43 in 2006. That's pretty close for an entrenched incumbent. IIRC, Bush lost the district to Gore and won it against Kerry (9/11 voters). But I don't recall where I found that.

It's kinda close, but it was also a horrible year, so if he's usually winning with 60+%, we should have a chance.
That said, it'll clearly be difficult.
Any chance Rudy wants to be a lowly Congressman?

I read somewhere earlier today that the district PVI was D+1. If that's right, it's hard to imagine the GOP wins an open seat in the 2008 environment.

Vito was seen kneeling with the House Chaplin in a corner today. That doesn't sound like the actions of a man who's unrepentant or grandstanding, it sounds more like he's honestly overwhelmed with what's going on right now.

All people of faith should pray for him.

I think people should pray for his wife, and his four children - they are the innocent ones here. Vito Fossella is a jerk, and a fool, who deserves his shame.
On the macro side, it seems that the GOP can't buy a break this election cycle. In that sense, we clearly are seeing a replay of the last cycle.
That's what Jesus said when they were gonna stone Mary Magdaline, right?
That's what God said about David when his illegitimate son was dying. He should be ridiculed!
Please. I do not worship a God that is gleeful and dismissive to men's flaws.

...I will take your word on this - I am Jewish. :)
However, I still don't feel particularly sad for Vito, but only for his family.
Not, of course, for his infidelity or his drunk-driving. But a lot of people in his situation—married, prominent—would, upon finding out that their mistress was pregnant, do all they could to pressure her into an abortion, and there would be great temptation to exert such pressure even if one was officially pro-life. (I don't know Fossella's position.)
And if that didn't work, or if some compunction prevented someone in that position from exerting such pressure, then he would be sorely tempted to drop both his mistress and their child, paying them off just enough to keep her quiet, but not having any fatherly contact that might endanger his marriage or his career. A Congressman can always find a new mistress, after all.
But Fosella didn't do that. He did wrong, but he could have done much worse. He deserves credit for that.
It's actually pretty good of him that he's visiting and taking care of his young daughter.
He's a flawed man, but it seems to me that he's got a good heart.
King David was probably the biggest sex-fiend in history. He had more wives and concubines then any man could ever dream of, yet he STILL couldn't keep his hands of Bathsheba. Yet, he was a man after God's own heart. It's good to remember that.

Tom Renoylds, Republican for the 26th district of New York, which includes Buffalo and Rochester and the following counties; Erie, Genesee, Livingston, Monroe, Niagra and Orleans will not be running for re-election beyond 2010 because, the census will show such a loss of population from his district, that redistricting will eliminate his seat.
Tom is a good guy, has helped us fight NYS Thruway Authority on removing tolls and many other local issues. I am NOT in his district, but it's another loss for us here.
We are talking about pushing him for the state GOP chair.
