From tomorrow’s Washington Post Magazine: “A Hard Choice: A young medical student tries to decide if she has what it takes to join the diminishing ranks of abortion providers.”
Seems like learning to kill babies can be lots of fun:
There isn’t anything nice about abortion, Lesley said, but she does not equate it with murder. “I think it’s a necessary evil, no, unpleasant service, we have to provide for the sake of” women’s lives and health. But she wouldn’t call herself passionate or driven to provide abortions. “I don’t have a gut drive. It’s more like an intellectual drive {lcub}hellip{rcub} A woman’s control over her body is representative of her freedom. I feel the obligation to make sure that service is available and not stigmatized.”
It was Christina, the Students for Choice chapter president, who proposed holding a papaya workshop to expose more students to abortion. She’d heard about such a workshop at a national Students for Choice gathering. It was a hands-on opportunity for second-year medical students to learn how to perform an abortion, using a papaya as a stand-in for a woman’s uterus. Lesley thought it was a great idea.
The women enlisted doctors, residents and nurses from Maryland and Johns Hopkins to run the workshop and e-mailed an invitation to all second-year students. They promised dinner, a sure bet to lure medical students. This time, if the dean knew about their plans, he didn’t object. Soon the workshop, which could accommodate 20 students, had a waiting list — and the women organizing it had a small firestorm on their hands.
In her e-mail, Christina had hoped to attract participants by suggesting that they’d have fun learning the procedure: “You’ll get the opportunity to be shown how to use manual vacuum aspirators using papaya models (apparently papayas bear a striking resemblance to a uterus. Who knew?)”
Lesley’s eyes were drooping as she, Christina and Regina set out tortillas and taco fixings in a second-floor classroom and assembled papayas and abortion instruments at stations in a lab next door. Like the others, Lesley was recovering from a big test earlier in the week, but she also had overextended herself on the treadmill. Still, in a long-sleeve, black scoop-neck top, jeans, shiny black rain boots and a tan sweater vest tied lightly at her waist, she was a picture of elegance. Her chin-length blond-streaked hair was tied into a tiny pony tail, accenting her angular features.
“This is so cool,” said Lesley, who believed she was doing something important to address the shortage of abortion doctors. After years of defending abortion rights, she would finally learn how the procedure is done.
Seems it’s not as much fun when you get down to business though.
The doctor gave a short lecture on first-trimester abortions. Then she showed the students how to grip the papaya with the scissors to hold the angle of the “cervix” straight on. With one hand, the doctor demonstrated how to administer a local pain killer, at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions. She picked up different sizes of dilators used to widen the cervix and advised against pushing them in too hard, because in a soft-skinned papaya, the dilators might come out the other side. In a woman, more pressure would be needed to slide the dilator past the cervix and into the cavity of the uterus.
The doctor next picked up the suction instrument, a manually operated vacuum suction syringe. It was attached to a cannula, or thin tube, that she inserted into the papaya. She rotated it around the fruit’s cavity, pulling and pushing the syringe, suctioning the papaya’s contents.
“This is the most important thing and the hardest to learn,” the doctor said as she pulled out lots of seeds and juice, what in a real abortion she called the “products of conception,” or POC. “You put the POC into a bowl, repeat if necessary, and examine them under a microscope to make sure you got everything,” she advised.
There was silence as she passed around photos of a dish with a light under it from a real abortion. It contained something that looked like a cotton ball, a yolk sac, and some blood and tissue. It was hard to make out any parts of a fetus under 3 months old, which, she said, is when more than 90 percent of all abortions are performed.
“How do you know you are done?” a student asked.
When you do it often enough, the doctor replied, you’ll notice a gritty feel as you are scraping the uterus. If not, there is another tool, a rod with a spoon, one side sharp as a knife, to scrape again.
Now it was the students’ turn to try the procedure in the lab next door. Imagining herself working on a real woman, Lesley looked tentative as she pushed up her sleeves and reached for the razor-sharp tenaculum.
“This just seems so awful,” she exclaimed as she tried to grab the papaya with it. “Do [patients] feel this?”
Her look turned to fright when the nurse practitioner at her station answered that they do.
And they will feel it, “Doctor,” for the rest of their lives–unlike their babies, who will never feel anything.

It's frightening
Menlo Sunday, November 23rd at 2:55PM EST (link)It’s frightening that these people aren’t being put away and locked up somewhere. They need to be segregated from civilized society.
Anyway, this article underscores what I’ve been saying all along. People make a mistake by thinking abortion is primarily about women seeking them. It is not something one “has;” rather they are something one does. People, even many who are pro-life, somehow can’t seem to get that.
It is insane that people never think to picket medical schools that train in abortions the same way they do the actual abortion centers. We should set up counseling for people considering the abortion profession the same way we counsel women with crisis pregnancies.
Those quoted in the article, if they can’t be locked up, need a good counseling session and educational lesson.
So? That doesn’t give her control over someone else’s body. It’s two different bodies, you idiot! You’d think a “medical student” would know better.
Besides, women seeking abortions don’t give a flip about their body. 99 percent of them have the INTENT of ELIMINATING a child that cannot or do not want to raise and whom they fear placing for adoption may cause emotional pain.
Actually, a wonderful group called the Genocide Awareness Projects works to expose more students to abortion. They don’t need Christina or her terrorist organization.
Don’t be so sure
Ever see “The Silent Scream?” Regardless, there is no way to measure brain capacity on the unborn. However, it’s fair to say that when abortions would be far more painful for the baby (assuming he or she could feel it), and when it takes much longer to kill the baby, it is also more likely the child does feel pain. That’s why second trimester abortionists are literally sadists.
Bottom line: I encourage anyone who lives near abortion-training schools (or in one) to picket and/or offer counseling to newcomers. Many more lives can be saved stopping an abortionist than by stopping a woman seeking one.

The fifth month of the pregnancy…
and for my final and most damning indictment of abortion….Dr. Tiller the BABY KILLER’s most fun abortion time of all….for the mother’s health of course…the ninth month..

scottbomb Tuesday, November 25th at 12:13AM EST (link)Father Pavone is the leader of Priests for Life, who often says, “America will not reject abortion until America sees abortion.” His website, priestsforlife.org, has pictures of aborted babies and a video that demonstrates how an abortion is done. The images are horrific, but very real. In my opinion, they should be shown to anyone considering an abortion.

Menlo Tuesday, November 25th at 1:03AM EST (link)I never thought much about abortion (other than it should be illegal) until I saw a real “medical” illustration from a non-abortion-related source (nucleusinc.com).
People often think these pictures are not really abortions. Understandably, it’s hard to convince them when the source is from someone with a position. That’s why the diagrams (and the actual statements of abortionists and abortion center workers) are so useful.

I read the whole papaya article...
Uma Richie Tuesday, November 25th at 8:48AM EST (link)Last night I read the whole article.
So this stellar third year med student who has been a pro-choice activist for 10 years didn’t know much of anything about the abortion procedure. I had the facts on how a D&C works in seventh grade. What do they discuss at NARAL meetings? The fairy godmother at Planned Parenthood who waves a magic wand to make girls unpregnant?
If someone with that much biological training didn’t have much background information on abortion, we must assume that when presenting the facts to average Americans, it will be the first time they are hearing/seeing them. Prepare for cognitive dissonance.
Also, it might be wise for us all to start outing our pregnant selves early. Gush, gush, gush from the time your pee sticks says + on what your new baby is up to. It is a happy way to educate everyone on how much a human your new addition is. (I’ll admit, this is difficult for me because for every two pregnant women you see, there is one couple who experienced a miscarriage in the past year. For every nine pregnant women you see, there is one couple dealing with infertility. I guess we should tread lightly until we are sure our audience isn’t among the suffering.)
On a separate issue, the med student was extremely cavalier about giving contraceptives to young girls, even supporting school nurses giving Depo provera to students. As much homage as they pay Darwin, a good portion of the left really believes that they can fool Mother Nature.
Second, although she paid lip service to STD prevention, most of her efforts seemed aimed at preventing pregnancy. In my opinion, STDs are a much worse consequence of sex than unintended pregnancy, but I’m just a small town bitter religious person.
Third, as always, there is the factor of interfering with a teenage girl’s perfectly functioning reproductive system, when no one ever discusses chemically castrating teenage boys. The Planned Parenthood crowd is so pro-woman - Not!
Anyway, the whole article is worth a read. It definitely helped me understand that the opposition may be wide, but it is certainly shallow.

it is soooooo maddening to me....
chuckie Tuesday, November 25th at 9:54AM EST (link)…every time i see something like:
“a woman’s control over her body is representative of her freedom…”
…well…..duh….
but ya know, if these women were capable of controlling their bodies, they would not be pregnant unless they wanted to be pregnant….getting pregnant “by accident” these days should probably be a felony offense…
full disclosure….chuckie is female, was an “unwed mother” at a time when it was NOT fashionable, and managed somehow to carry the baby full-term to adoption. chuckie does not like people who kill babies.

JustLeaveMeAlone Tuesday, November 25th at 1:55PM EST (link)Anyone thinking that these fetuses are not babies simply hasn’t been exposed to the “abortion industry”. My own work in a hospital in the 1970s changed my worldview forever. Back then, “doctors” were doing some VERY late-term abortions, and kids like me were logging the “tissue samples” into pathology.
It was instructive, to say the least.
I’d go to draw blood from a pre-abortion patient, only to have her complain about the needle. I’d think, just wait, sister, until the Doc shows up with that big ol’ saline injection for your baby.
I’d see babies stuffed into plastic buckets of formaldehyde. It still gives me nightmares.
Fresher in my memory is my baby sister giving birth to a 25-week “fetus”. I have pictures of my nephew, who could fit into my hand, fighting for his life in an incubator. Trust me, that baby felt pain. I have his picture, with his arm too small to wear his father’s wedding ring as a bracelet, if anyone wants to know what a baby that small looks like.
Everything in life is a choice. So make a choice. But remember that not every choice is morally right. Depriving any human of the right to life is evil.

Puzzling ending
Menlo Tuesday, November 25th at 3:32PM EST (link)I read through the article and found the end a bit puzzling. Lesley was speaking to a doctor who wouldn’t do abortions:
She just contradicted herself. If they think they are doing their patients good, they are doing just the opposite of what is right for themselves. Is Lesley really that stupid?
To put it in her terms, a doctor is not going to offer the choice of open heart surgery or a colostomy unless he or she thinks it is in the patient’s best interest. It is not and should not be up to patients.
So to answer Lesley more directly, it’s actually the job of doctors to be judgmental!

counseling
Common_Cents Tuesday, November 25th at 8:31PM EST (link)Is there any mandatory pre-abortion counseling required that informs women when they are considering abortion?
I went to BodyWorlds and part of the exhibition was preserved infants at every stage of development. If you had to look at the chronology and were asked when it was “ok” to perform an abortion on a fetus you could hardly do it beyond conception.

abortion has morphed
Common_Cents Tuesday, November 25th at 8:34PM EST (link)Abortion has morphed into a larger issue for liberals and now more political. It isn’t much about the procedure but “choice” has taken a life of its own.
Thanks for bringing everyone back to earth and the real reality of choices.
We should begin a campaign redefining “Pro-Choice” as the choice to have protected sex or not. That’s where the “choice” should be not a “choice” to take an innocent life.

JadedByPolitics Tuesday, November 25th at 10:28PM EST (link)Pro-Choice being defined as choosing to take birth control and using a rubber….that is a choice….taking the life of a human is murder…..it seems so simple doesn’t it. WE are going to have to get better at our messaging….I know this is winnable. The people have been mislead on this by the left and their media arm (all of the media)…we have to formulate a message of pictues of sonograms at each stage….I heard this whole election that images and perception is reality….we need to change the perception to the reality of the murders that are occuring without using language like murder.

Yes there is.
Menlo Wednesday, November 26th at 4:52PM EST (link)Of course ALL the abortion centers claim to do their own coun$eling, but we know how that work$.
Still, informed consent is required in many states. Some require color pictures of fetal development, and some states now require ultrasounds. South Dakota requires the abortionist to tell the woman that abortion “ends a distinct human life.”
I don’t know how many women actually look at it or whether abortionists even follow the laws, but they haven’t seemed to do much good.
