I’ve asked my colleagues for the privilege of serving as Republican Leader because I’ve tried to lead by personal example in the fight for smaller, more accountable government, and I sense that we now have our greatest chance in more than a decade to renew that fight together as a party.
We didn’t win yesterday’s election. But during the 110th Congress, while I have been Leader, House Republicans have learned how to win an issue, even in a toxic political environment, by standing on conservative principles. And knowing how to win an issue gives us the ability to rebuild a majority coalition, one issue at a time.
What do I mean by winning the issue? When the chips were down for our team last spring and gas prices were skyrocketing, I urged that we put all our efforts into championing an “all of the above” energy strategy. We focused relentlessly on the need for such reform throughout the summer, connecting with the concerns of real Americans and illustrating the consequences of a Democrat-controlled Congress. It gave us renewed credibility as reformers that helped prevent deeper GOP losses yesterday. When my colleagues Mike Pence, Tom Price, and Lynn Westmoreland sparked the historic energy protest on the House floor, I and other GOP leaders joined them immediately and did everything in our power to keep it going. Weeks later, as a result of our actions, the Democratic majority lifted the ban on offshore energy drilling.
In addition to helping to prevent deeper Democratic gains in a difficult year, the energy fight added a new signature issue to the GOP arsenal of 21st Century solutions and reform. Working with Governor Sarah Palin and others who represent the future of our party, we need to capitalize on it. Even more importantly, we need to apply the same model to other issues. One such issue is the economy, where Democrats are currently pushing a $300 billion “stimulus” spending bill despite unmistakable evidence that Americans believe cutting taxes is more likely to avert a recession.
Republicans will have many more opportunities to “win the issue” by standing on conservative principles in the next Congress. President-elect Obama has sketched a troubling policy roadmap that will be run through a Congress that has been purchased by powerful liberal special interests. While important conversations will take place in the coming weeks about our party’s future, here are 12 opportunities for Republicans that I consider “no-brainers” for the party of freedom, security, and smaller government:
-
If an Obama presidency means “spreading the wealth around” by raising taxes on small businesses, families and investment to pay for more spending in Washington, DC, Republicans will have no choice but to fight it vigorously in favor of a pro-growth plan for rapid economic recovery.
-
If an Obama presidency means cutting defense and troop funding while we’re fighting a war against terror, Republicans will stand opposed on behalf of our military men and women and the nation they protect.
-
If an Obama presidency means doing the bidding of radical special interests by taking away workers’ right to secret ballot elections, forcing workers to join unions, rolling back school choice for low-income children on behalf of powerful Washington teachers unions, and making it easier for dishonest trial lawyers to extort money through job-killing, frivolous lawsuits, Republicans will fight to put the country’s interests first.
-
If an Obama presidency means blocking production of American energy that would help lower costs, create jobs, and reduce our dependence on foreign oil, Republicans will fight for enactment of an energy plan that does “all of the above” – increased conservation, innovation, and domestic production.
-
If an Obama presidency means spending billions of dollars annually on wasteful pork-barrel projects, including taxpayer-funded “monuments to me” and earmarks “airdropped” into bills at the last possible minute to avoid scrutiny, Republicans will fight it vigorously.
-
If an Obama presidency means repealing state and federal laws that protect the rights of unborn children and respect the sanctity of innocent human life, we’ll fight it vigorously.
-
If an Obama presidency means regulating free speech and stifling dissent on the airwaves, Republicans will fight it vigorously.
-
If an Obama presidency means forcing people out of their private health insurance and into a government-run program, Republicans will oppose it and fight for real solutions that keep Americans’ health care in the hands of patients and doctors, not government bureaucrats.
-
If an Obama presidency means ignoring the looming fiscal tsunami in our entitlement programs –- ducking a problem that could eventually make the current financial crisis look like a tempest in a teacup – Republicans will have no choice but to fight it and demand responsible reforms to protect current and future generations of Americans.
-
If an Obama presidency means cutting off job-creating trade with the rest of the world, Republicans will stand opposed and fight to open foreign markets to products created by American workers.
-
If an Obama presidency means blocking investigation of the role Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, ACORN, and subprime mortgages played in the financial meltdown, Republicans will fight for accountability, transparency, and real reform to ensure taxpayers are never again put at such risk.
-
If an Obama presidency means sweeping ethical issues involving Members of Congress under a rug, Republicans will fight for transparency and accountability, while holding ourselves to the highest possible ethical standards.
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve tried to lead by example. I’m an outspoken opponent of wasteful pork-barrel earmarks. This is not a new position for me: I’ve had a no-earmarks policy since I came to Congress in 1991, after telling my constituents that if they wanted a Congressman who would go to Washington to raid the federal Treasury on their behalf, they should probably vote for someone else.
I voted against the farm bill this year, as I have in previous years, and made clear that I did not believe it was sufficient for Republicans to simply “vote their districts” on it. My own district is heavily agricultural, but my constituents know I believe passionately that the true economic potential of American farmers and ranchers can never be achieved under big government farm policies.
I have irritated the Washington teachers unions by being a strong advocate for school choice. I am a thorn in the side of job-killing trial lawyers, and an unflinching defender of the sanctity of life who is willing to take on our nation’s disgraceful multi-billion dollar abortion industry.
As Leader, I’ve stood up to John Murtha, Charlie Rangel, Rahm Emanuel, Bill Jefferson, David Obey, and Steny Hoyer, and directly challenged Nancy Pelosi’s hypocritical efforts to sweep all of their abuses and ethical lapses under the rug. I have also insisted that our own members adhere to the highest possible ethical standards, and done my best to enforce it. While RedState readers have not agreed with all my decisions in this regard, I’ve tried to be tough but fair in carrying out this important duty.
As both an individual legislator and Republican Leader, I’ve tried to lead by example, and you always know where I stand. Sometimes my straight-shooting, blunt manner produces moments of candor that get me in trouble in the “elite” media. I come from a blue-collar family with 11 brothers and sisters, and our dad ran a bar. It’s just the way I am, and it’s never held against me here. That’s one of the reasons I appreciate RedState.
The fight for smaller government must be renewed, and Republicans now have an unprecedented opportunity to fully re-engage in it. I’ve asked my colleagues to give me the chance to lead this effort. We’ll win the majority back and rebuild our party in the same manner in which President Lincoln built it and President Reagan renewed it: by standing up for the principles of freedom, security, and individual liberty that have defined the GOP since the beginning and continue to resonate with the American people.
Thank you for the chance to share my vision for the future of our party.

The Abortion Issue
Indy Wednesday, November 5th at 7:59PM EST (link)It would also GREATLY benefit the Republican Party if you can neutralize the abortion issue. The stance of the GOP (if I understand it), is that this is a States Rights Issue and the Supreme Court should never have decided Roe v. Wade. I am a pro-choice woman and I agree with that position. Unfortunately, the popular perception of the GOP is that you want to take away a woman’s right, and the populace really does not understand the States Rights argument. My suggestion is that you work really, really hard to get this issue on a local state ballot. Getting abortion banned on the state level; it will be appealed and I am almost certain that Roe v. Wade will be overturned (Ginsburg might even write the opinion). A lot more women will feel more comfortable joining the GOP, and you simply cannot continue to ignore 50% of the voting population of the United States. There are a lot of woman who agree with the positions espoused by the GOP; unfortunately, the GOP “image” is being anti-woman’s rights. Trying to explain states rights is a non-starter, since most people do not understand the United States Constitution. You simply need to be pro-active and get abortion banned on a state level, thus precipitated the appeal to the SCOTUS.
Is there anyone of the current Republicans willing to crack the whip on the RINOs?
QueenOfCups (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 8:03PM EST (link)It feels to many of us out here in voterland that Republicans that cross the aisle and go against conservatism are killing us.
What steps is this congress going to take to make the Republicans into a more cohesive group that is willing to fight?
I hope that John McCain will not betray us when he goes back to the Senate by joining any more “gangs” to further the Democrats agenda while throwing us under the bus.
Religion
Indy Wednesday, November 5th at 8:04PM EST (link)The other problem with the GOP “image” is that you are seen as the party of the Religious Right. People I talk to somehow have this far-fetched opinion that you want to impose the Christian religion on everyone. You really, really, really need to focus on the fact that the Founding Fathers came to this country to escape having a religion imposed upon them, and that they set up a system of governance so that they would be free to practice whatever religion they wanted to IN PRIVATE. Therefore, anyone — Catholic, Hindu, Jew, Atheist — is welcome in the GOP since you respect their right to practice their religion in private, and that you fully understand and respect and will uphold the principle that government will make no law respecting the establishment of religion. The majority of this country agree with that principle. Unfortunately, the GOP is viewed as the party that wants to make laws to establish a national religion.
I'd have greeted Republicans as liberators...
johninca Wednesday, November 5th at 8:04PM EST (link)…even though I’m not one myself.
Congressman, we don’t need any more big government conservatism. Both parties need to quit funding projects of dubious constitutionality. Why do we need a Department of Energy that produces no energy or Department of Education that educates no children?
If Republicans act in accordance with their professed principles, they’ll be back in 2010. Two years of Obammunist rule will be horrible for the country, but should do wonders for the GOP.
Thank you, Congressman Boehner
scottbomb (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 8:05PM EST (link)And while you’re at it, please help the GOP find a conservative chairman and an effective public relations platform. And we all know what the Dems plan to do to talk radio!

not to blame you for the past eight years or nothing, but I haven’t been very impressed with the Republican leadership ability to accomplish much in any of those 12 areas of “opportunity” you mentioned.
What I do know is that after 8 years the debt has doubled by 5 trillion, jobs have been shipped overseas wholesale, the war on Terror is a mess, Wall Street is broken and on the verge of becoming even more nationalized, my street is filled with foreclosure signs and the only reason oil doesn’t cost $4/gal is because of the looming recession. I also know that if you’re rich life is pretty good these days. If you’re middle class… it looks increasing bleak. John McCain’s and Pres-elect Obama’s campaign were all about change because people wanted change.
I’m not seeing a lot of change here.
The GOP just happens to be agreeing with
Bill S (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 8:10PM EST (link)the 50% that is correct (ie. the pro-life contingent). What good would it be to the GOP to reverse course on a policy that would, at best, capture maybe 5-10% of the electorate, but then lose support from a huge percentage of GOP conservatives? Hardly an intelligent exchange.
There are certain things that are universal. Life issues are one of those. It is unacceptable to allow a single state to just decide that it’s ok to kill babies. If we can succeed at the federal level, then all the better.
Frankly, I don’t care what percentage of the US believes in “a woman’s right to choose”. Immorality isn’t determined by a poll. Bravo to the GOP leadership and Rep. Boehner for their willingness to stand up for what is right.

2008 Was a Referendum on Bush
MichiganLibertarian Wednesday, November 5th at 8:12PM EST (link)People are deep into soul searching. I think it is a good exercise, but I don’t think this election was that complex.
There is a bell curve. The majority view themselves as moderates. I heard some exit polls on the radio and they were saying something like 22% identified as conservative, 34% as liberal and 44% as moderate.
Obama was able to present himself as a moderate. Up until 2 weeks ago, McCain’s main attacks to show that Obama was not a moderate were the attacks on Ayers. I said here before that was not effective.
People don’t like to be damned by their associations and so they don’t like it when they see other people damned by their associations. Everyone has some family/friends who they would probably prefer to not be associated with on the front page of a newspaper because of drug or crime or other scandal type problems.
Once McCain found the redistribution theme, it started to work to show Obama as a radical, but by then Obama had cemented his support and McCain had lost credibility.
So people were not voting that Obama was more centrist than McCain.
People were voting against George W. Bush. Obama succeeded at appearing safe.
Here is to hoping that he is safe.
Liberty = Libertarians
Sorry, Indy
scottbomb (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 8:12PM EST (link)But I reckon to say that a good majority of us in the GOP favor the rights of the unborn baby. It is the responsibility of the federal government to protect the right to LIFE, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It’s not the woman’s life that’s snuffed out in an abortion, it’s an innocent human being who never had a choice. For someone who doesn’t choose to reproduce, pregnancy IS preventable.

True
Indy Wednesday, November 5th at 8:14PM EST (link)I unfortunately agree with you. I would also add that I was very, very impressed with Boehner during the bailout fiasco. The majority of this county DID NOT support the bailout, and he was a bit of a hero when he stood up to it. Congressman Boehner needs to continue standing up for these principles. When Obama & Co. pass card check (and they will pass it), Boehner and the Republicans need to go on Fox News, Neil Cavuto, Campbell Brown, etc. and explain what card check means and what you predict it will do. You need to write op-eds in the WSJ. You need to make sure that you are ALL out there and ALL vocal. Take McCotter with you – he’s a fabulous speaker and looks and dresses like he just stepped out of an Old American movie. My point is, don’t just oppose it, go out there and explain to the American people what is going on and why this is so bad. Also oppose any stimulus. Tell them you prefer tax cuts; you prefer to give the money to the people to grow their own economy. Tell them you prefer a tax cut to businesses that hire new workers. Show them some charts (Ross Perot style) how $1.00 of government spending is really $1.30 of taxes (because of deficits, etc.). And keep on pushing that the deficit is HUUUUGE and we need to focus on paying it down.
We need to connect
kchand Wednesday, November 5th at 8:17PM EST (link)I appreciate your efforts and we need your help to harness an energized very liberal Democrat party. You will be fighting old battles again along with new ones, such as, off-shore drilling.
However, we need to WIN elections and ADD seats. We have not done that the last two elections. I would like to see a young, fresh face that can appeal to the YOUNG people that voted two-to-one for Obama. He is the face of the party now. It was easier facing the tired faces of Reid and Pelosi, even though they are still there.
I would like to see the long ignored, Jeff Flake, in a HIGHLY visible position. Jeff is well spoken and has walked the talk during his entire tenure in Congress.

RHINO Republicans
Janice Cantore Wednesday, November 5th at 8:20PM EST (link)Congressman, I appreciated your post and love the fact that you are in a leadership position, but can you explain why it is that when the republicans were in the majority in congress it still seemed as though the democrats ruled? And now that you are in a real minority, as much as I want to believe your post, why should I believe you guys will unify and fight for conservative principles? My impression is that when there is a fight, democrats stand united and republicans fold. The democratic minority demanded co leadership and got it. Rhinos consistently defect and water things down. I don’t believe anything can be bi-partisan in the current climate in Washington, bipartisan to a democrat means republicans just give up, and too often that is just what you have done. Indy Wednesday, November 5th at 8:22PM EST (link)The right to an abortion is currently protected under Roe v. Wade. I am asking you to have abortions BANNED at the state level. Surely you can agree with this?? If you succeed in getting abortion on the ballot, and if 50% of the states residents vote for the proposition, then you will have succeeded in getting abortion BANNED in that State. This ban will be appealed to the United States Supreme Court … which will, I am certain, overrule Roe v. Wade. So you not only get abortion BANNED at the state level, you also get Roe v. Dear Congressman Boehner,
Wubbies World (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 8:24PM EST (link)I know you were brought into office with the Reagan Revolution and the take over of the Congress by conservative Republican members of Congress. The Republican Main Street Partnership formed to combat conservatism.
The ideals you just listed in this post really rock! I want those things to happen! These are conservative ideals. I am a conservative. However, what about the foxes who are left guarding the hen house?
Will you fight republican moderates who run primary challengers against elected and safe conservative Republicans, just because they don’t like conservatives?
The members of this “Partnership” brought us back into the wilderness. What are you going to do about it? In my opinion, they will undermine everything you just said you stood for in this post! If you do not deal with them, your ideals are meaningless because they will undermine your attempts to enact them too.
I cite the example of your “all the above energy” policy. The Republican Main Street Partnership is opposed to “opening sensitive areas to oil and gas exploration”. They oppose your “all the above” energy policy!
Please Mr Boehner, I want to believe you, but after the last two elections and the results your leadership brought, I am left doubtful if your words will matter unless the foxes are dealt with too.
Your unwillingness to deal with them render your words meaningless, unless you lead by example on this issue too!

All of the “If an Obama presidency means…” points you bring up are an excellent start to a possible Contract With America II.
What I know will happen, as I’m sure you know better than I, is every point will be twisted by not only Rep. Pelosi and her majority, but by the press as well and every point you make needs to have appropriate anti-countermeasures in the breech.
Example:
“If an Obama presidency means “spreading the wealth around” by raising taxes on small businesses, families and investment to pay for more spending in Washington, DC, Republicans will have no choice but to fight it vigorously in favor of a pro-growth plan for rapid economic recovery.”
Readily translates to:
“You want tax cuts for the rich, no change from the failed…” etc ad nauseum.
“If an Obama presidency means ignoring the looming fiscal tsunami in our entitlement programs –- ducking a problem that could eventually…”
Means:
“You want to take away Social Security for senior citizens, starve our children…”
I’d just like to see the GOP for once ready with the Democrat Playbook already in hand, and an education strategy for a public that, again, only hears certain things from certain people.

According to exit polls, the "youth vote"...
Bill S (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 9:41PM EST (link)was about 18%. That’s a whole ONE point above the last 3 POTUS elections.
I don’t necessarily completely disagree with you, but I don’t think “the young” are the problem. I think the problem is that conservatism has been pushed aside for the time being, at least until the blue pill crowd discovers that socialism isn’t all they thought it would be.
Conservatism is the thinking man’s philosophy. The problem is that there wasn’t too much thinking going on in the electorate over the last six months.

Whitehorse (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 10:09PM EST (link)What happened yesterday was a contiuation of the 06 “thumping.” Republicans lost the White House & more congressional seats because not enough stood up to the harangue from the Democrats & promoted true conservative principles.

Start
JackNY Wednesday, November 5th at 10:54PM EST (link)I would start by going out and recruting “conservative minorities” to run for office , and have them be the “new face” of the republican party
Tom Delay does not get Jose or Max to vote for the party , we are in 2008 and the “Media” makes you or breaks you
(just ask HC)
We need to reach out to communities that have not found our party to be there party , and teach them why our party is better for them , I was still in school when Reagen won , and there were stories from the minority community that converted some to our party ,
Can anyone tell me except for CP which we were once proud off , which other minority is a leader in our party? televison and internet images speak alot , and when all you see is a bunch off country club republicans… well then no wonder we had a loss 60,000 registered republicans in PA , or that we lost the last ( liberal republican ) in the new england state
Did anyone think NC would even be in play ? ( lindsey graham)
Well the reason is simple , we are shrinking our base every year by not working to expand it

gekster (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 11:31PM EST (link)I don’t agree we have to kiss butte to get more members.
Mr McCain, in nice terms, was the lesser of two evils for conservatives to vote for.
In the primaries, remember February, when everyone in the media thought that Hillary was going to be crowned the Democrat nominee?
They all got behind Mclooser, “OK, there, I said it,” because they thought that he was the only one who could loose to “ANY” Democrat nominee.
They were right.
They got Hillary voters to vote for McLooser in the primaries because they thought a mixed race guy, like Obahma, just couldn’t win.
They pretty much took the conservatives picks of Romney, Thompson, and even Huckabee out of the picture by Democrats voting for McLooser.
The MSM were all how great McLooser was. He reached across the isle.
When Obahma became the nomanee, the MSM went totally against McLooser.
It was all Obahma the savior, and against McLooser, a Bush look alike Looser.
I think that we have to go back not to our base, but to our Regan Principles.
If you want to be a conservative, then join the conservatives. When you want to change to bring in more people, then you become a McCain, aka Looser We don’t have liberal Republicans in a true Conservative party.
You can’t be liberal and Republican at the same time, and I don’t care what Kowalski says. You just, in reality be the same thing as a liberal and Republican. Its like being black and telling everyone your white. We don’t reach across the isle to members of congress who will and do stab us in the back.
McLooser has always been a Rhino. “Republican in name only.”
He ran as a rhino and his consesion speech was a brief history of his loosing campaighn!
He pretty much said in his consesion speech that he is a big looser, and that conservativism is gone. Not as long as I can still bitch!!!!!!!
Lets listen and live by not so much what Ronald Reagan said, but by more what he did.
And lets hold this new presidents feet to the fire, like they did with Bush seconds after he was elected.
And although I didn’t vote for him, he is still my president. I will support him until he sells me out as an American.
Remember the 2000 election. Immediatly after, the libs started yelling, “He’s not MY president. I didn’t vote for him.”
Well, I say he’s my President, even though I didn’t vote for him.
And thats what conservatives do.
Country first, Party second.
“And living in The Peoples Republic of Michigan, I know every deer hunter likes to pick off a rabbit, squirrel, or troll now and then.”
They say Republicans are for the rich, Democrats are for the poor.

then they have to make more of who they are for.

Constitutional amendment anyone?
JoeG Wednesday, November 5th at 11:34PM EST (link)It would take 34 states to start a convention and 38 to ratify.
No, I know we don’t have anywhere near that right now, but remember amendments can have no time limits. After all, the 27th amendment took 202 years.
Go ahead Wyoming or Utah and get the ball rolling. Each time there is enough of a R majority in any state, get it passed in yet another one.
The best part is that precedent already says that the courts have NO say in the process.
I have to agree on this one
JoeG Wednesday, November 5th at 11:38PM EST (link)I have run into that opinion before and I’m absolutely floored.
I blame the Southern Baptists and others who are WAY to pushy at trying to “save” everyone. Some think that the Republican party is another means of doing this.
The last time I was around when this opinion was expressed, it really floored the other two in the conversation because one is agnostic and the other atheist and they both are staunch Republicans.

Instead of doing something, national R’s busied themselves with trying to get re-elected. Had they done what they were elected to do, the election part would have taken care of itself. Now they neither have power or the accomplishments, and they only have themselves to blame.
All that work that we did, and they just crap all over it!!!

Bill S (Diary) Wednesday, November 5th at 11:58PM EST (link)was the bigger issue, based on today’s post-mortems. It appears that the Dems simply did a better job in turnout, and we either lost GOP voters, or they didn’t bother to go to the polls.
My theory? I think there was a lot of ambivalence about McCain from a small (self-perceived) disaffected faction of the Huck/Rudy/Mitt fan base…but it was enough to influence the numbers.

The youth think the left are the only ones that care about social problems
mom2oneson (Diary) Thursday, November 6th at 12:44AM EST (link)The left are the ones talking about them so why shouldn’t they? The youth are too inexperienced in life to understand the problems the left are pointing out are real but their dem’s solutions are bad. It was the same thing all during history with the industrial revolution and the factories.
When the left blames the right for starving children because of AFDC limits or whatever the right needs to be able to articulate how much a low income single mother of 2 gets in the way of EIC (possibly $5,000!), medicaid, food stamps, pell grants for college/vo-tech, daycare assistance and possibly housing, and how she will continue to recieve food stamps and medicaid until she earns $xxxx per month. I don’t know why McCain didn’t do this with everything Obama said about redistributing the wealth. It already is like that. If just one person would actually respond they could show how what the left is saying isn’t true.
The repub leaders need to ask the youth to join them in doing stuff in the community. The leaders need to show up at the food bank, show up at the colleges, show up at the campus Ronald McDonald fund raiser, at the car wash for the youth group’s mission trip. The youth think we ignore the poor and social problems. They think the repubs don’t care about them because we disagree with the left’s solutions and do not want to fund them. They need to see** us providing the positive solutions and just some involvement with the very low income. They repub leaders need to articulate how much help the low income already recieve in specific numbers per household when the left makes those blanket statements about welfare mothers being need help and starving children. The left is so attractive to the youth because we all can change the world at 21 and the left talks about social problems.

seattle_ite Thursday, November 6th at 4:16AM EST (link)We’ve been letting the lefties frame our positions, without hardly a peep to correct them. It’s really easy for both sides to buy a “my opponent is lying” ad on TV or radio, but we do need to be more proactive in furthering our OWN message.
I won't yell at you for that.
seattle_ite Thursday, November 6th at 4:32AM EST (link)Very well said.
Not gonna pile on, Congressman B.
seattle_ite Thursday, November 6th at 5:26AM EST (link)One minor quibble about your points in the post; no mention of gun rights. Anyone with half a brain knows, after 80 years, that gun control is mush. Controlling criminals is the key, and I’d like not to lose my right to shoot at varmints and paper.
My (hopefully helpful) addendum to your ideas are as follows.
1) You know that ‘fire in the belly’ your group had over the drilling issue? We need more of that; lots more, and on every issue, until the MSM gets sick of seeing your faces. The base is fed up with you all letting the left define our agenda.
2)STOP with the one way bipartisan nonsense. If they truly wanted to work together for the betterment of our Nation, they’d have thrown our side a bone or two, after all these years. Instead, it’s been 20 years of “our turn in the barrel”, if you get my drift.
3) ARTICULATE THE MESSAGE! You folks have been curiously (and depressingly) silent, while all the malfeasance has been going on, and only Foley and Craig get thrown under the bus??? Hold them all to account. If you have any power over the rules commitee at all, start instituting massive punitive measures for any member, of either party, who are on the take or severely unethical. Sure, lead by example. That’s what we expect from our side. Taking the ‘high road’ is commendable, until you drive us all off the cliff. Y’all expect us to be honest in our dealings with the Government; it is past time that Government returned the favor.
4) I served in the Reagan era, and got to know his philosophy pretty well. When we catch a member who isn’t living up to that standard, it’s usually too late to do anything about it. You work with this type of hack, and can spot it quicker than we can. Sanctions can work, if they are applied.
5) Midnight votes on automatic pay raises must be nice, but with the current state of our economy, and the ABYSMAL financial treatment of our troops, it looks quite tacky, from our level. Think about it.
6) While I understand (to a certain extent) the divide within the party over the three legs of the Conservative stool, the opposition has us hogtied with their understanding of party unity. A SoCon who doesn’t support a FisCon or NatSecCon is asking for a smackdown, in my opinion.
I truly don’t mean to sound disrespectful, and I know you’ve probably heard worse. But we are very frustrated with the lackluster performance of the party since ’88, when the NE elite took over. We got lucky with eight years of a GOP President who saw the threat from abroad, but you have all dropped the ball on selling the vision. I believe in the GWOT/Preemptive strike strategy, and only wish that Reagan had thought to use it over Tehran or Beirut. Maybe even Tripoli. (Sigh). Lost opportunities are, as always, learning experiences. PLEASE, learn from this loss.

NONE of the current leadership is acceptable.
Vinnster Thursday, November 6th at 5:32AM EST (link)I am sorry, but I put all the loses squarely at the feet of the Republicans. When we won in 1994 you guys did a great job until about 1999 then you guys went “Washington” and behaved just like Democrats spending all to be *amned and winking as everyone sucked on the earmarks. Do you think we would be sitting here today in the minority if you all had attacked earmarks when you were in power and with that majority eliminated them? NO. I consider the current batch of Republicans no different from the Democrats.
The bailout was a mistake. Again you let the Democrats walk all over you guys as they set up the whole credit debacle.
I would gladly take a full blown depression and be broke only to start over…at least I would be staring over in a country with real opportunity. I personally will not vote for any Republican that belongs to the old group. I did not vote for Dole and she lost. I will not vote for Burr.
If we have to be the majority for 30 years and we move closer to a Socialist state I will put up with it, because we all know the whole financial house of cards of Social Security, Medicare, Prescription drugs are all going to collapse in time. Maybe, maybe after then will we get people to serve that really do believe in smaller government instead of the same POLITICIANS the current batch of Republicans are today.
John Boehner, go sell you bag of conservative talking points to some other gullible voter, but you had you chance and failed miserably. You will not fool me again.

Dont you people get it?.
dsteiger Thursday, November 6th at 10:22AM EST (link)Do you really think the house and senate leaders are to blame for your losses?. My God, NOT ONE of you has referred to the corruption of your party.
Do you really think people will fall for a rube like Palin?. Is that what your base looks like, ignorant of the issues?. What is it with Republicans being attracted to intelectually simple people for their leaders?. You have had 8 years of Bush and you STILL gravitate towards to someone like Palin.
Here are some reasons you lost.
1) WAR. NO ONE can claim we neeed to go to Iraq. It was a lie.
2) Religion. What part of CHOICE do you not udnerstand. Your party loves WAR ( not very pro life ) but claims PRO LIFE.Seperation of Curch and state. Please see consitution.
3) GUNS. The gun issue has been overblown by the NRA ( the NRA needs you to be very afraid ). No one is taking you deer rifle so get over it.
4) ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID. The Club for Growth and Norquist should be deported. When people see GOP they think Corportae Greeg ( the Dems have plenty to answere to also ).
5) Limbaugh / Savage / Coulter / ORiely etc. You people need serious, honest, intelectuals instead creeps for your talking points.
6) LEADERSHIP. This is THE reason Obama won, people saw a steady, smart, curious and Human condidate, he won over Republicans and Independents becuase he showed true leadership. Bush has around a 20% approval rating, LOWER than Nixon.
7) Support moderates. The GOP needs to support them not the Tom Delay whack Jobs. If you just run on the same old worn out, Guns, Fetus, anti gay blah blah blah then keep digging your grave.
As a Demmocrat I do NOT want one party to control but I am sick of mean, racist, homophob, anti choice, pro war Republican’s and frankly the GOP got what it desrerved.
The WORLD is once agin looking to the US for REAL leadership, lets hope Obama can deliver as he has one big mess to clean up.

Apparently wishful thinking.

Support moderates?
Erick Brockway (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 1:08AM EST (link)Like John McCain, you mean? Guess you forgot to support him in voting for Obama?
OH! You mean as Conservatives we should support moderates? Kind of takes away the whole point of being Conservative, wouldn’t you agree?
Ah, I’m sorry, now I get it. As a liberal you are free to vote as far left as humany possible, but as conservatives we have to vote as far left as humanly possible.
Wait, I’ve heard this before somewhere.
It was the definition of bi-partisan, that being, you agree with as you put it “Demmocrat”s, and partisan on the other hand is when you adhere to your principles.
How to put this nicely?
Is “No Thank You” nice enough?
I was going to say “Get Bent” but that wouldn’t have been nice.

You are ignorant of "us". No true conservative will take your advice.
Rod_Patrick (Diary) Friday, November 7th at 2:32AM EST (link)On the issue of war alone:
Clinton’s dismal job on national security made the country vulnerable against the terrorists. Terrorists used the 8 years of Clinton presidency to design their plans for terror here in America.
Even your Anti-Iraq War House Spooker Pelosi urged your Clinton TO BOMB SADDAM HUSSEIN. Her reason? Hussein was building nuclear weapon. And to her credit, she was right before she was wrong.
War on Terror including Iraq came due to 9/11 Tragedy. No conservative believed in your theory based on wacko conspiracy theories including Neocon Theory of Harvard nuts and Hollywood flicks like Farenheit 911. But one unpublished theory was that 9/11 was fabricated by the Democrat themselves out of their anger due to the loss of their Green President Al Gore.
Haven’t you heard of Soros wanting to destroy GWB? But that’s not theory. That’s a fact.
Since the beginning of the Cold War, socialists and communists here in America changed their resume into an Anti-War movement.
UN planned designed its Anti-War Movement headed by World Government Al Gore since 2002, reason enough why the War on Terror become so UNPOPULAR in Europe and third world countries.
War on Terror was supported by majority of Americans including the majority of Democrats in the Congress since 2002.
Your Obama, who made that “right on at first time” speech, was a disciple of a socialist/communist Third Party.
Conservatives are generally “protectionists” and oppose Wars. It’s bad to the economy and results to human tragedy. But when a US President is in war, we support the President outside America and criticize him at the inside. We have records to prove, including Vietnam War and Korean War. But your democrat leaders are the opposite. They are unequivocably traitors.
If the number 4000+ soldiers and the alleged 1 trillion dollars of debt are the measure of your disgust on “Bush War” … then you should hate your Party to the core because of JFK’s Vietnam War.
If you blame GWB on the moslem hate to America, you got it wrong. From the mouth of Khadafi, Hussein, and Bin Laden alone, you should have realized that it was Truman’s foreign policy legacy of One Israel since 1940s that should be blamed for that. Truman locked us up to that policy.
Don’t blame Reagan either. Reagan only solved the problem made by Democrats.
GWB and today’s America only reaped the fruition of Democrats’ old foreign relations policy on Middle East. But it would be too late now to change our course in that direction.
GWB and Cheney’s efforts remain to be the most feasible strategy as of this time wrt Middle East Conflict and national security.
Real sins of GWB? The sins made by GWB is not against you, Democrats. You have already been pandered by GWB too much. Those sins were directed to us, Republicans:
Now, go and have an enjoyable 4-year term of your Obama.
I think this comment is for that guy's comment above spartan4life's.
