MEMBER DIARY

I Sure Wish I Could Comment upon –and Recommend– RedState Diaries; Of Course, I also Wish I had a Bugatti…

I’ve had some brilliant Pearls of Wisdom to impart at RedState.

A Diary would entrap my attention, and I’d be compelled to join in on the conversation. I’d feverishly type, and edit, and compose, until verily I had masterpieces of reason and logic and substance to add to the emerging epistles. That, or maybe a limerick.

Then, I’d notice after typing these brilliant bits of prose (nay, poetry!), I’d go to the “post as conservativecurmudgeon” button, and it wouldn’t work. Or, more likely, the button would disappear, or it wasn’t there at all. Or, the field would turn gray, and the post would never, well, “post”.

Soon, I learned to cut the comments to the clipboard, and repost them in a new window, or open Explorer, and do it there.

That worked all of one time.

And, of course, there have been times when I wished I could help blast a diary out of the darkness, and shoot it to the top of the “Popular” diaries, but, alas, these diaries are nowadays only the front pagers, or ones with links to other sites. We poor RedState Peasants must now eat our thin gruel, and enjoy the tastiness of being allowed to post, I guess.

Anyway, it’s all rather discouraging. It seems the “bugs” in the new layout that were going to be fixed are now “features”…

All web sites are a “work in progress.” If you know of specific bugs, and can list the steps to reliably duplicate them, I’m sure the RedState folks would be happy to hear about them.

  • Finrod

There is the little star that’s at the right top of the comments area to recommend a post, but few people use it, plus it doesn’t show you the names of the people that recommended; on the old site I’d go by who recommended a diary just as much as how many recommendations.

  • westcoastpatriette

With respect to the recommend feature, it is without doubt the most missed and its absence definitely contributes to the feeling of demotion and lack of recognition for member diarists. Who wants to click on an anonymous star compared to the old way where our names would proudly be displayed as a “recommender.” And the mixing up of front page writers along with member diarists in the “popular” column has also blurred the distinction between the two (not to mention the unfair competition for member diarists whose diaries are not seen on a par with front-pagers). But I think what we have is the best disqus can offer and they are not equipped to customize the site the way we were used to.

While I have had a few diaries and comments disappear forever, most of the time that doesn’t happen. I wonder why you are experiencing it so frequently? I miss hearing from you in the comments.

If only there was consistency on mixing front page writer’s diaries in with the box of diaries on the right, it’d be fine, although I’d prefer it was just us guest writers. I toggle between ALL and COMMENTS in the box, rarely POPULAR, and some FrontPC posts are there but not all.
    .
Also, when I click on the FPContributors tab at the top, the list has diaries from non-FPCs. Today I see one from Lineholder and Jake, both who I didn’t think were FPCs but I could be wrong. Are they promoted by the FPCs to the front page for excellency? That was a practice during the holidays that I liked, but the FPC’s wrote a comment, “promoted to the FPage.”
    .
My suggestion is to have consistency one way or the other, but not to mix the guest writers with FPCs. Also, to post a list of the FPCs and keep it current, say under “About Us”.
    .

    • checkmate2012

I admit I was wrong on Jake as a FPC. Now, does anyone know if the “Popular” click feature is based upon # of comments or # of stars? It’d be nice to know the criteria for being popular. Thank you in advance to the owners and FPC of RS for your input on this and my questions above.

    • PowerToThePeople

I know Jake was promoted to or brought on as a front pager, if we are talking about the same guy, but not sure about line. She/he is qualified to be there and has written many front page worthy diaries.

      • checkmate2012

RS has every right to promote someone to FPC (duh, as if I have a say and know I don’t) and admitted my ignorance on Jake in my comment below when I looked at the top of Jake’s most recent post as that particular post did designate the post as FPC.
        .
My point is there is no consistency from day to day, as to who’s on first. I just ask, is Jake a permanent FPC or just this one time? Was Lineholder promoted from now on or b/c of a great post that RS wanted to elevate?
        .
I’m a nerd in that I like to play by the rules and don’t find it hard to do so here at all. I just want static rules to play by and I have no animosity towards RS or recently promoted diariests; to the contrary. Just tell me when someone’s status changes, keep regular joe’s diaries seperate from FPCs and inform us of a rule change. I didn’t like the interim NFL Refs and hopefully most would agree that rules are made for a purpose and are not subjective….and rather than making a nonsense beef, I at least try to make constuctive suggestions.

        • westcoastpatriette

I think lineholder’s diary was promoted today but I don’t think she has been promoted to a front-pager. Jake, however, is. And the confusion with how disqus “qualifies” popular diaries is something RS probably has no control over. It seems random. To me, it seems like disqus moves member diaries over to the popular column based on how many comments there are as opposed to how many stars it gets. But, I could be wrong about that. Anyway, it is very confusing compared to what we used to have.

With respect to how member diaries get promoted to the front page, I think any front-pager can promote one if they think it is worthy.

          • checkmate2012

I have a hard time beliving that Disqus can’t distinguish b/w popular via # of comments versus # of stars (not a programmer but geez that’s basic stuff). And given the popularity of RS, Disqus should be flexible in their account management- hello IBM?
            .
Ha, ha and shock value returned wcp! I always thought LH was a man and now you shocked me in return (i.e. gekster)…on-line is definitely weird stuff :-)

          • westcoastpatriette

hahaha…it’s a weird feeling, huh? Somehow we get it in our heads that someone is a certain sex and it’s a shock when we find out otherwise.

          • checkmate2012

Oy vey- Disqus just puked up my comment to you just cause I backspaced a wrong letter- ugh. It is weird and wonder if you’d prefer to see an M or F next to a poster name? I’m mixed as the ah ha moment is so great! So I’m mixed on knowing and that’s not my style…what do you think? I think an equivalent to a Twitter trend would be fun, to know if the majority of posters on a topic are male or female…coming from one that is not on Twitter!

          • westcoastpatriette

I kind of like it like it is. It makes me think of that scripture that says in the body of Christ “there is no male nor female, no slave nor free, no Jew or Greek, but we are all One in Christ!” Sometimes I wanna scream that scripture in the faces of all the liberals who are obsessed with trying to force “equality” on everyone and everything. The only place you will ever come close to that ideal is in the body of Christ.

          • checkmate2012

Glad you can be way more definitive than me (on this issue- ha) and don’t even get me started on “equality” for everyone. I think I’ll find that post about women on the front lines and say my peace there….who knows if we’ll disagree there…doubt it but one never knows. Btw, the post from “ratio” last night was awesome and think Melody would like it too.

        • PowerToThePeople

Go for the beef, it is always much more fun than constructive suggestions. :)

Not disagreeing with you, simply adding that I know Jake is FPC, not sure about Line although she would be a great addition. The qualified to be there comment was simply an observation on my part as to her talent, not an attack on your position or thoughts. Just did not word it well, but in my defense, I am quite tired and fighting a three front war with two liberals and one moronic slice of cheesy cheese.

          • checkmate2012

I go for the beef and always like a good steak when I can afford one! And I don’t like whiners without suggestions for improvement…that was my policy as a manager and I’m sticking to it on posting.
            .
It took me a minute on your last sentence, but got it (slow, sorry but the pizza part threw me off and then on target.) IF, I could partake some unwanted wisdom, and I don’t pretend to more than you by any means, I’d say we should challange them in order to win them if you know what I mean. You’ll see in my reply to norishman and think it’s our unique opportunity here to change minds…if and when we can.

  • AceInTX

I remember Erick saying he realized the Diaries and comments were what made Red State….and that he wanted maintain the sense of community the diaries represent when he first rolled this Turd out…on convention week of the freaking election no less.

So much for maintaining the sense of community the Diaries represent.

Well Done Red State…you’ve become just a stop along the road for me. I’m lucky if I stop by the site long enough to read one or two posts every other day or so from Erick, or Daniel, or Bill S…but the community of activists and the repository of all things related to conservative activism Red Sate used to represent is DEAD!

    Bravo

      Your post caught my eye.
