Mccain suspending campaign, Good idea??

John McCain announced that he will suspend his presidential campaign on Thursday to return to Washington to help with bailout negotiations. He urged his opponent Barack Obama to do the same.

“America this week faces an historic crisis in our financial system. We must pass legislation to address this crisis. If we do not, credit will dry up, with devastating consequences for our economy. People will no longer be able to buy homes and their life savings will be at stake. Businesses will not have enough money to pay their employees. If we do not act, ever corner of our country will be impacted. We cannot allow this to happen,” McCain said.

I personally think It was a bold move, but a good one.. McCain definitely has the upper hand now. What do you think Obama’s reaction will be, and how do you think this will effect the polls? Especially if the debate is postponed. McCain’s strong point in the debate was foreign policy, if that debate is postponed do you think this will hurt the McCain campaign??

Could be good move

He needs to come out swinging against regulation, for the free market, for suspending capital gains taxes etc. Maybe this will give him a chance to reevaluate all of his liberal stances he took last week when this crisis came to light. This may be a chance for him to hit back hard.

In principle, this is a good idea

shooflyguy68 Wednesday, September 24th at 2:25PM EDT (link)

Both of these men are, after all, US Senators. They should be in Washington reviewing the bail-out options, negotiating better terms for the American taxpayer and then voting on the final version of the bill.

On the other hand, the latest polls show Obama building a big lead and this could look like McCain is ducking the debate.

I think the final analysis will come from what John McCain and Barack Obama do in Washington if they decide to suspend their debates.

McCain getting cold feet!!!!

mict1111 Wednesday, September 24th at 2:30PM EDT (link)

McCain is desperately trying to push back the debates to give himself more time to prepare for ‘fixing the economy’.

There are enough very talented people working on the problem so John, your planned debate for President does not need to be postponed.

If he’s not ready to debate then he’s not ready to be President. Deadlines happen. Events happen. You can’t just push things back because you’re not ready. the President MUST be able to handle more than ONE thing at a time. Aren’t you running for President?

Note
-The Debate is on national security- not the economy

-McCain has been waiting months to debate Obama. Obama turned down McCain’s offer to do 10 debates prior to this one.

-Ready to debate? Is this one of those things where you turn around and cast your candidates weakness on us? On our side of the aise, we are confident there is no part of the job McCain isn’t prepared for.

-Isn’t the best way to campaign for president by solving the issues that the president will have to face? Not by waiting a week to come up with a response?

A smart move by McCain.

KeyWestConservative Wednesday, September 24th at 2:56PM EDT (link)

Let’s get this out of the way first: mict111-You’re wrong. McCain have cold feet? McCain not ready to debate? Hogwash! He’s been trying to get Obama to debate him for two and half months. Check your facts and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
This is a smart move politically for McCain, although I don’t believe he’s doing it to gain a political advantage. He knows the impending financial crisis is a serious one and it needs to be dealt with NOW and he doesn’t trust the ‘very talented people’ back in Washington to accomplish the task in a timely manner.
The question now becomes, “What will Obama do?” He’s got no choice but to accept McCain’s challenge and go to Washington. The problem for Obama is this: What’s good for the country is bad for Democrats; what’s bad for the country is good for Democrats. If McCain is perceived as being a leader on this issue or, Gaia forbid, instrumental in solving the problem at hand, then Obama suffers politically. If they both go to Washington, no matter what the outcome, each side will try to take credit for success and put blame for failure on the other side, because the reality is Washington is deeply divided and no crisis will bring it together. It can’t be done, it won’t be done. The lust for power and money has corrupted people of both parties and the solutions being proposed by both sides, I fear, will not work.

Brilliant move IMHO.

I think suspending the campaign is brilliant for two reasons:

a) It’s the right thing to do. I don’t understand why McCain and Obama both weren’t back in DC on Monday working with the Senate on this issue.

b) It’s politically brilliant. How can Obama say no, I’m going to keep on campaigning? Why isn’t he in DC doing his job? People’s financial future is at stake here. That’s more important to most people than what political points they can score on the campaign trail.

How McCain Can Make Political Hay

Spartan4Life Wednesday, September 24th at 3:04PM EDT (link)

The die is cast. This is the issue that will determine the outcome of the election. McCain has showed he is capable of bold decision making. I think he needs to go there now.

First, reject this taxpayer bailout of bad loans. 99% of us are not facing foreclosure. While we have sympathy for those that are, I think the American people are skeptical of this action.

Next, support a reasonable alternative, such as the private sector proposal that House GOP is crafting. Let the Dems and the Bush Administration own this turkey.

Finally, commit that the Justice Department in a McCain administration will be tireless in it’s pursuit of the crooks and greedy bastards that created this mess and that they will get what’s coming to them.

Just say no!

Brilliant move IMHO.

Support McCain On This

Swamp_Yankee Wednesday, September 24th at 3:06PM EDT (link)

The media will try to spin this against him, but this is the McCain that independents and conservative Democrats love. Strong no-nonsense leadership and opposed to Obama’s selfish preening.

the meida will never give McCain fair press. He has to change the news himself. In a news vacuum, the media will deliver McCain and Palin with a million cuts.

It’s the right thing to do. It makes Obama look selfish if he doesnt comply.

Country first. Or Obama first.

Good leadership!

If Obama and McCain both suspend their campaigns and come together, it could be good for the country. Politically… it would force both Obama and Biden to suspend their campaigning, but Palin would still be able to campaign, as she’s not in the senate. :-)

I donated to his campaign today because of his stand on this bill!

Postponing debate is right for the country as well as for McCain

civil_truth Wednesday, September 24th at 3:25PM EDT (link)

With the public and media in “economic crisis” mode, absolutely no one (except political junkies) is going to pay attention to or care about a debate on national defense/foreign policy. Such a debate would be a total waste of time, as anything said will simply be crowded out by economic news.

Indeed, the public could hold it against the candidates that they would go ahead and debate on national defense/foreign policy rather than working on the economy.

Thus it makes sense to reschedule a debate on this topic to a time when the public is in a space to be able to focus on these issues.

And since McCain is assumed stronger on foreign policy, having a debate when the public is paying attention (versus now) will have to be a plus for him. But the country too deserves to hear this debate when they can pay attention.

Shrewd move by McCain. It puts Obama in a box. If he agrees to postpone the debate, he’s following the leader. If not, he appears more interested in his own political future(no surprise there). OF course, don’t expect the MSM to report it that way.

Obama's Reaction......

conservativesoldier83 Wednesday, September 24th at 3:59PM EDT (link)

From what he has just said , it clear that Obama is still not on the same page, and that he is still going to show up at the debate friday. As far as “suspending” his campaign, he was not really that clear about it. Due to the money put into the debate, and Obama’s reaction i believe it will still go on. I really fear that this bill will not work, and no matter what McCain does about suspending his campaign, Mr.Obama will most likely still run his ads
and continue his campaign. Do you think this is hurting McCain, possible give Obama the upper hand as he already has a recent 6% increase in the polls..

brilliant move...

McCain didn't stop ads...

Crowe Wednesday, September 24th at 4:21PM EDT (link)

At least, my impression is that the ad buys will go forward with no interruption. The suspension of the campaign refers to his tour of the country giving the stump speech.

“We sleep soundly in our beds only because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon those who would do us harm Dear Leader Obama gives us leave to do so.”

McCain works; Obama issues statement

Crowe Wednesday, September 24th at 4:36PM EDT (link)

He will maintain his edge in voters’ minds on foreign policy, while at the same time denying Obama a chance to regurgitate memorized, focus-grouped lines that make him seem like he’d be good on foreign policy.

At the same time McCain shows himself serious about the economy and deeply interested in fixing it, while showing him interested in governing rather than campaigning.

Obama, OTOH, “wanted to issue a joint statement” rather than get to work and will not suspend his campaign.

This is a microcosm of the choice: someone who will work at governing in Washington at the expense of campaigning for your vote versus someone who will campaign for your vote at the expense of working for you in Washington.

“We sleep soundly in our beds only because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence upon those who would do us harm Dear Leader Obama gives us leave to do so.”

I don’t know why Obama’s resistance to suspending the debate is news. He’s all flash and no substance. The debates scare me to death because people fall for smooth talkers. McCain is for real and Obama appeals to the naiive.

Good for McCain (another distraction!)

britman Thursday, September 25th at 12:49PM EDT (link)

McCain is using this “crisis” to distract voters from the issues. If he had any real answers he would be able to spare 90 minutes to present them in front of a national audience. He has said himself that he doesn’t understand the economy, so he is likely to do more harm than good if he gets involved.

Because putting that word in quotes has got to be the single dumbest thing that I’ve seen all week, and I saw a campaign ad of Ralph Nader musing about sexing up pandas.

But Moe, would this be a "crisis"...
