    Thanks for your post.

I was with Perry, briefly Newt, then jumped to Romney — I wanted a governor (though Daniels / Jindal are still my favorites).

This is a great post of course and it leads me to two points.

    1) The makeup of SCOTUS is so close that conservatives should vote for the Republican in any and all Presidential and Senate election, barring behavior that is near criminal.

    2) I think that Barak has worked hard to bring conservatives together with his left wing, riling up of his base.

  • westcoastpatriette

you are describing, constitutional. Even wrote a diary trying to describe the mental and emotional impact Perry dropping out of the race had on me. I was literally despondent for about three weeks and stayed away from RS for that period of time.

Difficult as it has been, though, I made myself come back here and I determined to stay engaged for the rest of this election season so I could learn from the process (I am a political Tea Party-type newbie) and figure out how I can best serve the conservative movement going forward. Not only is quitting in a snit not my style, it solves nothing. Sorta like cutting my nose off to spite my face.

Now, I am gradually coming to terms with how awful Obama is and, by contrast, Romney seems okay. I will be able to assist in seeing him elected — with a clearer conscience — when I consider the alternative. So, consider me on the team to defeat Obama — whatever it takes — and when Romney disappoints along the way, all I have to do is remember Obama and the disappointment is diminished. Glad to see you back in the fight, too.

I first was for Perry and kept his signs up for a month after he left the race in hopes for a change from him but after a month I got over it, Then went to Cain till he let the curtain fall and see what he had done. After that I rested for a while till my tired brian saw that it was surely going to be Mitt. I now support Mr Romney fully with no apprehension or concern I truly feel he will make an excellent President and truly represent the ENTIRE country.

  • Viet71

He’s not a conservative’s conservative, but he is an intelligent and decent guy who understands the Constitution and loves America.

  • cheetah2

My Perry bumper sticker is still on my car because I’m proud I was a supporter. However we must have Romney as our next president. We can’t afford to lose this one. I pray for him every day that he will win and become the leader we need him to be. I think he is quite capable of doing both.

  • christopher770

Good post! I was absolutely in the same boat. I was a Cain person, then Newt. I also had issues that I really struggled with Mr. Romney, which ultimately boiled down to just two. Nevertheless, what I really was doing was letting my loyalty to Newt blind me to Mr. Romney. That is History. All of that is out of the way. Now, however I am really starting to hear Mr. Romney and see his passion. Ladies and Gentlemen…I LIKE WHAT I SEE AND HEAR so far. Not all mind you, but 99%. Compare that to about 1% for Obama. Anyway, if you have not yet seen/heard Mr. Romney’s speech on C-SPAN on 5/23/2012 at the Latino Coalition Economic Summit, I would strongly suggest you do so. I have posted the link below. I was actually riveted to my chair. I have not heard such a common sense clear positive vision for Education in my lifetime. The message from beginning of the child’s Education cycle to working adult was, in my humble opinion, absolutely phenomenal. It was so incredibly refreshing to see/hear the stark contrast to Obama with his tone, demeanor but more so the actual message. I think that most probably feel as I that to go through MORE 4 years of the most divisive name calling dishonest immature presidency, certainly in my life time, but possible ever, is and has been unbearable to stomach by hundreds of millions of people. Not all of us agree on many things, but by George we agree on one thing for sure. Obama and the next thing is Mr. Romany must be elected. Honestly if the last four years does not teach the American Public to get their butt involved more and educate thyself about the Political life of this country, and let the media know their tired of the lies and bias, I don

There are a few concerns I have after seeing many people say that they believe Romney will be the next Reagan.

Among them, the most important is the fact that, although it nowhere in my post says so, you’re believing I think Romney will make a great president. I never said that. I said he’d be better than Obama. I think Romney will be better than Obama, not better than Reagan or anywhere close.

He’ll be better than Obama, and that’s what I’m fighting for. Let’s be real clear that he isn’t close to Reagan.

Though I wouldn’t mind Ford, Bush is a terrible model, at least at this point in time.

I don’t expect him to be Coolidge, but I’d expect him to be at least as conservative as Ike?

          • constitutional

Ike was fantastically more conservative than his policies displayed. I would peg Romney around Bush 1, at the most Bush 2.

          • acat

Yeah, Bush 2.0 had his problems, but .. if you take the public image out of the record, he’s pretty good.

I would be pleased to see Romney living up to that level.

          • PowerToThePeople

I believe things happen for a reason and if we had the ability to go back in a time machine and put any of the other contenders in after 9-11, we would be sorely disappointed.

We could have had Gore and he would still be doing squirrel studies in Taliban country so we make sure none die during any action. Not too mention the debt would have been huge, company after company would be out of business due to greenie regulations, and dotcom would now be dotgore.

Or Kerry would have simply told the enemy to put Heinz on every table and all would be well between the countries. That and he would ave continued with the “I was wounded in horrific battle” nonsense.

Bush got a bad rep of which some he deserved. But I thank God that this country was lucky enough to have elected a man with true testicular fortitude and a man who deeply loved his country. Say what you will about the man, we have the opposite of Bush in the White House now and how has that worked out?

Now I am off to see why Hell froze over.

      • trimulchio

dispassionate bent, Romney’s temperament is more like Obama than Reagan. Not being emotionally available has limited Obama’s success as President. I wonder how that will effect Romney, who has a similar temperament but more experience and more appropriate skill-sets than the President?

        • Flagstaff

I don’t want him to reach out and touch me–Obama’s IRS has already done that. I don’t want Ozzie Nelson or Jim Anderson or even Ozzie Osborne–I’ve got no problem at all with Ward Cleaver or Mike Brady.

I want him to reverse Obamacare (which I hope is already a moot point by that time), start reversing the excessive regualtory burden for many businesses, and head for a balanced budget by reducing spending (it really IS a lot harder to do than we like to say) and by reducing taxes to the optimal rates somewhere around Reagan’s. All that has to do with policies and performance, not personality.

Just consider this–Romney accepted the task of turning around the Salt Lake City Olympics, and he did it. From a disaster to a huge success. Does anybody think that Obama could have done that? Or W? Not even Reagan.

That’s what we need, only on a much grander scale. There is approximately a 0.00001% chance that we can right the ship if Obama is elected–and maybe a 70% chance we’ll be on the way to recovery in four years if Romney is elected. I think the turnaround will start immediately after the election, and I also think that Romney could be a great President. He’s the perfect MAN for the job we need to have done today.

For some reason, Republicans are loath to defend Romney’s business experience and support the idea that it can be an important talent in a President, especially today. He’s been successful because of that talent, a talent that Obama has none of. If you don’t understand the problem and its environment, how in the world can you solve it?

          • checkmate2012

turn us around or at least stop the massive drain. We’ve needed a businessman or woman in the office for years. Anyone remember Ross Perot? I do as I voted for him the 1st time since he was a biz man.

Politicians have got us nowhere but more in debt and with less freedoms. I’m with you and think he’ll be known as the turn-around guy for the U.S. No wonder O is shaking in his WHouse boots.

  • http://jakespeaks.wordpress.com/ Jake Walker

Happy I could play a part, and I think a lot of us are having similar experiences.

  • zachv

During the last three to four years of Reagan’s presidency. They were upset about his 1986 tax plan, the growth in federal spending and felt that Reagan conceded too much to the Democratic Congress. Iran-Contra was a big issue too. Looking back though — we all aspire to be the next Reagan.

I think one thing that is always beneficial is having the ability to see at the big picture. Understanding the final goal verses the immediate tasks really helps one orient himself or herself. It’s best to be an abstract thinker.

Today, that big picture objective is that we NEED to defeat Obama this November. We can’t narrow our thinking or sit out in the effort to pink slip Obama or else we become our own worst enemies.

  • jeffreywturner

And I will vote for him. But I am still not going to “Be Happy About It”. In fact I will be quite disgruntled and will grit my teeth while I vote.

  • Bill S

And nice job with the Mittvangelism, Jake.

He sure wasn’t my first choice – he was probably my 4th or 5th. But he’s several light years ahead of the sleaze who currently inhabits the White House.

    • Flagstaff

Herman Cain’s shortcomings were obvious, and too big to be overcome against Obama. Same with Newt, but Newt’s positives were higher. I had hopes for Perry, but he never showed any talent for the campaign, and I’m sorry to say it, but he didn’t seem to have what it would take to get started and rise to the top. Even Tim Pawlenty, whom I think would be a good President, scratched himself early. Did we really think Michelle Bachmann was going to be our candidate? She imploded in that debate over the Texas shot program, as did Perry over the illegal education program.

That left me with Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney, and of the two, Romney was the one who had actually worked for a paycheck, and didn’t whine about it. That, plus Rick is a “big government” Republican, and I’m convinced that Mitt is not. Once Rick failed to grab a toehold, the only one to pick was Romney.

And he was picked. Not by the “Republican establishment,” but by voters in various states. That’s the idea of a democratic vote–the collective wisdom of all of us transcends our individual wisdom. All of those issues we debated here ad infinitum were considered and balanced by party members, so whether anybody “loves” him or not, he’s the choice of all of us. You either believe in the party and its people, or you don’t.

If anybody is thinking, “Yeah, I don’t really believe in it. Guess I’ll vote for Gary Johnson,” don’t forget that he couldn’t even make a dent among people who might tend to like him. What exactly will you be protesting? That the majority disagreed with you? It really is true this time, four more years of Obama could bankrupt the country. He WILL NOT change, and he’ll assume that we agree with him.

  • politiman

or is Romney taking more to the right as a general election candidate thus far?

  • mm2327

Here is an accurate one: conservativism (a political or theological orientation advocating the preservation of the best in society and opposing radical changes) The problem with too many fools these days is, they’ve bought into the attempt by neo-cons

(who are NOT conservative, but Trotskyites, Marxists who sought to gain power in the US by infiltrating the GOP) and libertarians, who are proto-Marxists, who seek to redefine what “conservatism” means. Rick Santorum respects the US constitution, he’s not a liberal. It’s NOT conservative to support outsourcing the US’s economic independence, to China and Latin America, it’s in fact undermining the US’s sovereignty, all in the name of temporary profits for a few. Those who think it’s “conservative” to reduce the people of the United States to penury, and destitution, to empower communist states, to allow the wealthiest, who’s hard work was rewarded by a free and sovereign US, to undermine that sovereignty and freedom, all in the name of profit are morons. I’ve seen so called “conservatives” holding up the name of Edouardo Savarin, as something to be proud of. Savarin was only wealthy because the US took him and his worthless Brazillian family in, when their lives were threatened in Communist Brazil, when he was a child. Savarin isn’t loyal to the US, he only cares about himself. He is, a leftist, but like him, neo-cons and libertarians don’t respect the US, they only want to loot the US for their own profit, to auction our resources off to the highest bidder. Sure they exploit our rights and freedoms for themselves, but they are contemptuous of the obligation to respect the rights and freedoms of the rest of us. Rick Santorum would return the US to economic independence, and strength,so we could defend ourselves from the Marxist wolves at the gate. Frankly, I don’t owe Romney a vote, and unless he selects a true American patriot as VP, he can go to hell. I’m not voting for a candidate who would sell the US to line his pockets, that is Romney, and it’s Rubio and it’s Ayotte, and that skank Haley, who sells her endorsements. If you think supporting a fraud is “conservative” then no doubt you’d think Obama was “conservative” if he gave you a kickback. I’m not playing this game, either the GOP stop taking the US citizenry for granted, and tells Romney to select Santorum as VP or be prepared for four more years of Obama, because Romney the RINO, along with another RINO is as bad as Obama, get it.. Either temper the RINO with a patriot like Santorum, or it’s your own damn fault if Obama wins.

Romney being the frontrunner and all his and the flakey right wing punditry’s flirting with Rubio or other RINOs, have discouraged the independents, and the vast majority of the republican base, you know, those of us who aren’t wealthy, and I’ve got news for you, there are fewer wealthy people in the US, and fewer middle class who are comfortable and feel secure. The base Romney needs, to win, are the people who were comfortable with Santorum, the people who are struggling in this economy. If you think we’ll fall in line, like the RNC does, because we, don’t have any where else to go, dream on. In these situations, we either stay home or write in another name. You’ve taken us for granted too long, and lots of people are saying it. Yet the flakes in the RNC think Romney wins the wealthy and illegal aliens to win.. well, go ahead and slap us in the face with that garbage, just remember when your McCain style candidate loses, if you want to know who to blame, look in the mirror.

Romney isn’t a conservative, he’s said as much over the years, and his legacy as former governor of Massachusetts is the same as the PoS now governing the state. Romney is all about what profits him, that is NOT conservative, nor is it republican. He, like Obama does not respect or intend to uphold the constitution.

So, Mel, are you inferring that Erickson’s Red State, will ban me for speaking out? Rather like the left he purports to disdain, then, if that’s the case.. perhaps that is what is “red” about this site, and not conservative in any way, shape or form. You do know what the official definition of a U.S. neocon is, right?

As far as I understand it, it’s a person who is hawkish in foreign policy but is a democrat leaner in social policies. Basically a hawkish Democrat.

Most of what I’ve read of your postings Moe, is a libertarian leaning conservative with high amounts of common sense.

“troglodyte uber-conservative”, with everyone “yucky” on the right (regardless of actual philosophy) being called one. People across the political gamut, from Ayn Rand (definitely not a neocon) to Santorum (definitely a neocon) have been called neocons.

I appreciate the fact that you’re clearly mentally handicapped, but that does not give you the right to spam my post with your incoherent drivel. I will not tolerate it.

If you have a beef, or a problem with Mitt Romney, you are gladly welcome to discuss that on a Ron Paul forum, where they believe he will be the nominee. I am also told that Herman Cain supporters have formed an alliance. You should try that, too.

Unfortunately, you are seeing fit to accuse me of being a RINO because I’m voting for Romney. You misread the post, or you didn’t read it at all. This isn’t a discussion about why Romney’s a RINO, or why he’s a terrible choice, or why we shouldn’t vote for him.. As said, that’s best left for a Ron Paul forum. This is a pro-Mitt site, just as all conservative sites should be.

Once again, I respect that you evidently have significant mental problems, but that is no reason to act as if you’re being silenced. Start an opposing site where all you do is go against Romney. Who then, is the RINO? Who is working for Barack Obama to be elected, in that case?

I’m afraid it is you, my friend.

Let this be a warning to all who come here to scream about Mitt being a RINO: this is not the purpose of this site, nor this post. Please refrain from your inane comments.

You are saying you’d throw your support to Obama if Romney doesn’t pick Santorum (which has less chance of happening than a moon colony)? If so as Melody just said, I suspect a moderator will be dropping by to end this discussion.

      • mm2327

Not voting for Romney, by not voting, or by writing in name of a candidate I would have preferred is NOT voting for Obama. I’d say supporting a RINO, who compounds his fraud, by selecting another RINO like Rubio, is the same as voting for Obama. Because if Romney selects Rubio or another RINO who are no different than Obama, then you are still voting for Obama’s policies, which means you’re voting against the sovereignty of the United States.

        • lineholder

Romney isn’t perfect, but he’s a far cry from being someone who prefers socialism over our current form of government to the point that he will totally betray anything and everything that this country has stood for.

          Obama will do exactly that.

        • tnfriendofcoal101368

Only two choices Romney or Obama, if you don’t support Romney in the General now that he has won the primary, you are supporting the re-election of Barack Obama. As I said, I doubt we will be having this discussion much longer. In addition, the term you used for Nikki Haley is pretty similar to the language often spewed by Bill Maher #JustSaying.

…or one of those morons who thinks that by Rubio drafting a politically palatable Republican version of the DREAM Act, that he’s somehow betrayed his Tea Party principles.

voting Kos Troll and really Markos needs to start training them better. I realize given the available pool of Kos troll talent, he can’t really depend on quality, but the lack of training is almost criminal. I mean look at this guy. Markos if your reading this first we are not misogynist like your buddies HBO Billy and Big Eddie, that is only something Axelrod accuses of when he wants to invent subjects to avoid talking about “The Ones” record. Second, your trolls really have to try harder to hide their own beliefs, attacking neo cons is a dead give away,

is worth a vote for Mitt. With a few more like Chief Justice Roberts, Justice Thomas and Justice Alieto, a lot can be done. (I am counting Justice Scalia s one of the Justices most likely to retire.)

    • texasref

Souter, Kennedy, Stevens, Rehnquist, O’Connor, and Stevens–all Republican nominees.

You put up an establishment presidential nominee, you get establishment court appointments. That is just how it works.

The following was quoted in http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/2875476/posts

Of the 36 people Romney named to be judges or clerk magistrates, 23 are either registered Democrats or unenrolled voters who have made multiple contributions to Democratic politicians or who voted in Democratic primaries, state and local records show. In all, he has nominated nine registered Republicans, 13 unenrolled voters, and 14 registered Democrats.

      • garfieldjl

I can deal with someone like Justice Kennedy replacing Justice Kennedy. I don’t want someone like Kagan replacing Justice Kennedy.

Yeah Romney is probably not going to pick someone that is a conservative, most likely they will be center/left, but that is a lot better than far-left.

I’m not exactly thrilled about this election, but we can’t afford 4 more years of Obama.

  • mikeymike143

that is one of the MANY reasons that republican primary voters in every single state have rejected him as a presidential candidate. republicans really dislike racists and anti semites. of course paul is not a republican anyway.

and yes i know the paul and newt sites are claiming that their candidate is going to win a brokered convention and the nomination is still up in the air. people post those delusional fantasy articles on my tea party facebook group page about this topic all the time. so i have seen all these supposed scenarios…. and i am telling you they are beyond ridiculous. its romney/demint vs obama/biden in november for the future of our country. go mitt go!!!!

yeah, i had to throw the demint VP reference in there. you know i am still blatantly shilling for jim to be the choice. :)

  • trutexan

I believe it was Mark Davis and he said, “Mitt Romney is the only man on the planet who can stop Barak Obama. And if that isn’t enough incentive for you to get behind him, I don’t know what is.”

    Sold.

I admire your willingness to come to this confessional Constituional. You speak about what millions have felt over the past months – myself included (you know I had to be a Perry fan…it’s in the Texas Constitution somewhere I’m sure). But this election isn’t about Romney, or Santorum, or Perry or Newt. It’s about Obama. It’s about getting the biggest government Socialist out of the executive branch and out of power. The Dems would love for us to suffer the same defeatest attitude as in 2008, but I for one refuse to get on board with that. Nope. Not me. And I’m glad you are coming along for the ride on the Romney boat. Welcome!

We must unite. All of us fellow conservatives had candidates we wanted as well. I am an avid Newt supporter but I have faced the reality that our battle is over, but not lost. The real battle is not over the nominee, but over America. Even with Newt out, I still support our party and our freedom. As conservatives we have always prided ourselves at the higher dignity we expressed over our opposing party. We must as a party unite for the well-being of this country, ourselves, and our families. Romney may not be the Ideal candidate. You may not like Romney or disagree with some of his opinions. The fact is he is a conservative businessman. He has ran corporations, rebuilt companies who were otherwise doomed to extinction. Romney is the tool we have received, and although he may not be the sharpest, or most useful he is our tool none the less. And I, as an American, plan to use him to my advantage. If we do not unite as a party, or as a country our consequences will be much more severe than Romney as our President, it will be Obama.

    Thanks for this post.

During the primary, I first supported Cain, than Perry and finally Ron Paul. I really didn’t think I could ever get behind Mitt. If you can’t tell from my candidate roster, I’m a deficit hawk, and it pissed me off that Mitt wasn’t as hawkish as he could have been about cutting federal spending.

But now all of that’s in the rearview, and we’ve got a nominee. Looking at the election as between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama, makes me realize how much worse Obama is, and forces me to realize that Mitt is not so bad.

I don’t think we should just hand Mitt a free pass on his spending plans now that he’s the GOP nominee, but we gotta keep our eyes on the prize. So let’s win this election, beat Obama, and then keep a sharp eye on Mitt once he’s in office.

I also think we’ve gotta show Ron Paul some respect – because even though his campaign is done, he has showed more fiscal discipline than just about anyone in Congress. We should recognize his leadership on those points, and try to tone down the rhetoric against Paul’s supporters. I’m no Paulbot, but I supported him toward the end, and I know how heated the arguments can be with his cult-like following, who are not necessarily the most polite people on the internet. Some of them are just libs, but many (especially the young ones) are conservatives and there’s place in our tent for them.

(This is my first comment, although I’ve been lurking at RS for awhile.)

it takes more than that to truly “support” him. Donate. Put up his signs. Or work for the local Republican Party. For the serious writers here, write some truly positive columns about how Romney will turn the country around. Condense it and write it to your local paper, or publish it on their website if you can. Convince others to vote Republican.

If you can’t do that for Romney, then do similar stuff for your local and state Republicans–we need the Senate to overturn Obamacare (if the SC doesn’t) and Dodd-Frank is in serious need of repeal or major overhaul. It won’t happen if Harry Reid remains as the majority leader in the Senate. Same for the House.

Perhaps even more, same for your state offices. The Dems have pulled out all stops to win the Sec. of State office in many states, because that is where election results are counted.
