Stump The Veep

The Wonders of Selective Editing

Like a lot of conservatives I was gnashing my teeth on two levels at the initial interview clip yesterday of Governor Palin, in response to a question from Katie Couric, not being able to name any examples of John McCain pushing for more regulation in his 26-year career – that’s like if somebody running with Joe Lieberman couldn’t name examples of him bucking his party. McCain may not be the knee-jerk hyper-regulator that many Democrats are, but he’s built an extensive track record of pushing for more regulation in numerous different areas (e.g., campaign finance, health care), much too often in fact for my taste, and while you’d expect Palin to have focused more on boning up on policy than on her running mate’s lengthy legislative record, it’s not that hard a question.

If you watch the full(er) clip, though (and from the choppy editing it’s still hard to tell how much ended up on the cutting room floor), you can see that what happened was that Palin was talking about a specific example of McCain pushing for more regulation of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and Couric pressed her for other examples from McCain’s legislative record specifically dealing with securities regulation:

H/T. Now as it happens, if you do your homework on this, it’s not hard to find such examples; McCain voted for Sarbanes-Oxley, and voted against the 1995 Private Securities Litigation Reform Act (one of only four Republicans to do so) and the 1998 Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act (which passed 79-21), for example, and joined with Carl Levin to propose that if companies “don’t account for their stock options as a cost in earnings reports, then they cannot claim them later as tax deductions.” Of course, I can tell you those things because I’m a securities lawyer and I have access to Google; I’m not sure McCain would have all those examples at his fingertips offhand, much less Palin (indeed, I often find that people even in my business are surprised to hear that he voted against the PSLRA, and obviously Couric couldn’t find them or she wouldn’t have falsely stated as fact that McCain “almost always sided with the, less regulation, not more”). In that context, it’s not much of a “gotcha” moment to demonstrate that Palin doesn’t know chapter and verse on one of the more arcane corners of McCain’s lengthy career. (Unlike, say, the time Barack Obama had to admit to a voter that he didn’t know anything about the Hanford Nuclear site, the largest nuclear waste dump in the Western Hemisphere and a decades-long ongoing controversy). That said, she does need to get better at the essential skill of how to not answer a question she doesn’t know the answer to.

Of course, most conservatives would challenge Couric’s assumption that piling regulation on regulation is always a good thing, but Palin’s not the top of the ticket here; McCain is, and you don’t want to get off his message (the opposite problem bedeviled Mark Sanford earlier this summer when he got stumped trying to name ways in which McCain’s economic plan differs from Bush – I’m sure Sanford could think of examples but he was unable to name any without highlighting the fact that they’d be things Sanford opposes).

Finally, note that as edited, Couric opens with a question about money paid by Freddie Mac to the former employer of McCain campaign strategist Rick Davis, in which he may arguably still have some financial interest. This might be a reasonable line of inquiry if she explained why this matters, i.e., McCain’s much more extensive bill of particulars against Obama himself on this issue, but instead Couric presents the story as if the only issue is Rick Davis (the McCain camp’s full and formal response on the Davis story is here). Which is pretty much the argument in a nutshell for why people like Couric are not worth talking to at all.

can figure out that the Drive by Media no longer likes McCain & doesn’t want him to win, they only like him when he is ripping fellow Reps. & bucking the party & making them look bad

GOOD GOD someone wake up & realize they HATE Sarah Palin

I thought she did fine with Gibson, but this was a step backwards.

She needs to be able to shut down these kinds of things with much more self confidence then extended pauses and rambling answers.

Regarding Davis, when Couric kept pressing, she should have said “look Katie, Rick Davis and the McCain campaign have made it explictly clear that Mr. Davis neither lobbied on behalf of FNMA/FHMC nor received financial interest from the lobbying efforts of others. If you want to take exception with that statement you need to take it up with Mr. Davis.”

Regarding the What Other McCain Regulation question, she should have said “Look Katie, the matter at hand is not about regulation for the sake of regulation, it is about failure to deal with the moral hazards greated by Government Sponsored Entities. While I have no doubt that during his 26 years in the Senate, Senator McCain has supported regulations where reasonably appropriate, I certainly hope those instances were few and far between, as regulation- in and of itself- is not automatically an inherently good thing.”

Both of my suggested answers are dodges of Couric’s underlying question, but if Palin could say things like this with command and authority, she can push the interview on to the next question.

When she looks like she’s overly searching for an answer, and can’t answer the question in a manner that conveys authority, she has a problem.

I love Palin, I want to see her be VP and then Pres, but she needs to get way better at this, and the bottom line is whether she knows the answer or not, just say what she thinks with a greater degree of self confidence and she’ll be fine. But she needs to get better at this ASAP.

I’ve noticed a couple interesting ones that make me rub my chin. Despite the daily tracks and other polls out there showing an Obama lead, there are others that are telling a different story, if you pay attention.

There was a couple polls a few days ago showing that McCain is tightening the gap on the economy, and the two are within 2 or 3 points now, compared to the 10 point lead Obama used to have…

There are two polls now (WSJ and LA Times) that the internals are showing McCain lead with independents is increasing (now up to 13 points)…

There is a new Franklin Marshall poll out (using a huge sample, over 1300) showing McCain lead with white women and white men has increased, and his white woman advantage is now better than Bush’s in 2004…

There are one or two polls showing that McCain base support from Republicans is now 91%, where Obama is in the low 80s among Democrats (might have been 82%?)…

If all you look at is the top number in poll results and the RCP average, then I think you miss the big picture. Between now and Nov 4th, one of these pictures has to start looking like the other, if the polls are going to have any validity.

As someone voting for McCain, who hates Sarah Palin, I’m getting a little sick of all of the whining about the editing of the scant interviews she’s given. She could get a live interview with any serious journalist she wanted in a heart beat.

Stop treating the press like they actually know anything or like you don’t want to get on their bad side.

Case in point: Katie Couric cites McCain’s tenure as chair of the Commerce Committee as a reason to think McCain sponsored more banking and financial regulation.

But the Commerce Committee has nothing to do with Banking and Finance regulation, it deals with transportation, maritime and aviation issues. Couric would be looking for the Banking Committee, currently chaired by Dodd.

  • Achance

but one I’ve found a lot of agressive wommen incapable of making. I’ve had to put a lot of female managers and investigators on the stand in various administrative hearings. With more than a few of them, I’ve wanted to just reach across the table during cross and shake them and say, “Stop it!” Just incapable of either blowing off the question or simply saying I don’t know. Hopefully Gov. Palin will learn to not answer some questions.

  • Western

Palin being from Alaska probably innocently believes that the Washington/New York City press corps is similar to other press outlets.

Regretably, my concern is that the McCain campaign must provide her with counter points to those type of questions i.e, the real issue in this campaign is about reform and leadership and John McCain has demonstrated these traits e.g., the Surge in Iraq and yes campaign finance. PERIOD.

It is impossible for her to know every legislative accomplishment of McCain.

Sadly, Palin must approach the Washington/New York City press corps as an extension/agent of her policitial rivals–but do it with humility and not confrontation language.

As such, Palin must not naively assume she is seating down having a cup of coffee with Alaskan journalists. The Washington/New York City press corps will contextualize her responses–she must be quick.

You know, Reagan was never good in one-one policy points with journalists. Palin must counteract these journalists with quick one-liners.

    • PaRep

is they way overdid the Dems & D leaning Ind. I forget what pollster I heard 4 years ago maybe it was 8 years ago say that he could make a poll sit up, rollover & beg if he wants it’s to, Just watch Missouri, Ohio , Michigan & Pa. if McCain’Palin are in statistical ties the national polls have to be very close or McCain being slightly ahead

  • shooflyguy68

But overall she was awful. She is totally unqualified and would be a disaster as VP at this time. This next clip is particularly painful. If you put it next to the video of that young lady trying to explain about “US Americans” not having maps, I doubt you could tell who was more incompetent.

How people can say with a straight face “would be a disaster as a VP at this time” while on the other side we have Obama/Biden.

Yeah, it is pretty painful watching Biden tell a guy in a wheelchair to stand up too. And listening to the 42 minutes of “Uh” during Obama’s press conference in Jordan is a miserable experience too.

          • shooflyguy68

specifically because of his pick for VP. I won’t be voting for Obama either. I’m left with either abstaining or voting for Bob Barr.

I’ve never been a prolific poster here, but I was on the John McCain for Pres bandwaggon when it looked like Romney and Huckabee were going to battle it out for the top spot. I’ve been specifically staying away from RedState because I know that I can’t really post anything too positive about our ticket but this display of incompetence is just too much to take.

If I don’t get banned for not supporting the ticket, I’ll be back after the election.

to complain about the socialist policies a President Brobama is implementing, because you helped cause it. Or, to postulate on what you “think” McCain should do now that he’s President, because you won’t have earned the right.

We are on the brink of a 750BB government “investment” in the credit markets and the Congress is about to throw a few billion dollars at the US auto industry and you want to complain about the socialist state that the Dems might bring about?

I just saw perhaps two of the last true free market Conservatives in the Congress on TV, Rep Mike Pence and Sen Shelby. I only wish we had more like them and Sen Coburn.

I’m a big supporter of Palin, but I think leaving her in limbo like this does her a disservice. She’s just get to get out there and be herself and she cant do that if the campaign and press hinges on every interview and word. she needs to find her groove.

Just get her out there. Not everything has to be high profile. Maybe Leno, Larry King the View. Get her warmed up and send to her to the wolves on fire.

  • ContraMundum

…Let’s just get the other things she either can’t recall or doesn’t know out of the way…

… What was the cause of the Sunni/Shia split? What’s Cindy McCain’s middle name? What year did Jackie Gleason break his leg on live TV?

I mean, come on,… everyone is out there looking to bring the woman down, and she has got to be studying 9 to 5, and unless one is omniscient, any person can be stumped.

Why does the media assume every stumble on Palin’s part is evidence of her ineptness? I mean, aside from the fact that they hate every cell in her body with a burning hatred.

Obama says he visited 57 states, no one called him on that… Obama said he pals around with conservatives too, O’Reilly asked for a name, he couldn’t give one. No one called him on that…- Biden, well, Biben is Biden. No one calls him on that.

I am sick of this stupidity.

Let’s just wait for the debate.

It will be the best thing that ever happened to McCain’s candidacy. Just let her do her thing. They are boxing her in so much that if the question doesn’t have a canned answer, she is lost. Her saying something that doesn’t perfectly mesh with McCain would be a great thing. Alot of people think Cheney and Bush walk around in lockstep plotting the destruction of the world. A little bit of difference between the P and VP would be welcomed IMO.

    • Doug_A

I think you’re right on this, Western. The political environment here in Alaska is civil compared to that in the lower 48. Sending her to Washington is like casting pearls before swine.

      • shooflyguy68

Next time do your own Google search.

I would argue that if we are going to do Socialism, we might as well do it right. The government should get an equity stake in any firm and any assets if we are going to use tax payer funds to bail out the credit markets. The government can hold the assets until the market improves and then divest as soon as possible. This current bail as proposed by Sec Paulsen (I know it could change) is simply a transfer of wealth from average tax payers to firms that placed risky bets while reaping record profits earlier this decade.

If you listen to the media the republicans can’t do anything right no matter what they do it is wrong and at the same time if Obama does nothing that is the right move. I am going to vote for McCain just because of these media bullies
