Spinning Anger

Fear

While we are on the subject of things that get written for reasons other than the relationship they bear to the truth, those of us who remember the successful effort to demonize Republican success in 1994-95 as “a temper tantrum,” “angry white men,” etc. (all the way to Bill Clinton essentially blaming the Oklahoma City bombing on Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh) see the same campaign ramping up again with media claims that Republican voters are dangerously unhinged and the only cure is to stop saying bad things about Barack Obama’s record.

If you have been following this “story,” it’s helpful to have a few reminders that a lot of these stories are based on misreporting, and that there are plenty of examples of this and worse on the Left side (really, after the last 8 years of Bush hatred and the outpouring of venom and slime directed at Sarah Palin, is “which side has more unhinged angry people doing and saying vile things” really the hill the Left wants to die on?).

There are, in fact, angry, crazy people on both sides, and this is in fact the point in the electoral calendar when a lot of people’s emotions are running high. The decision to make a media narrative out of one side at precisely the moment when Obama badly wants to delegitimize any criticism of his record and his past…well, it’s just a story someone wants you to hear.

The inmates are running the asylum. There are t-shirts being sold that say “Sarah Palin is c%^&. There are bumper stickers that say “abort Palin”. And much worse. There is an x-rated movie being made by Flint with a Palin look alike. These Obama lovers are truly obscene. Let’s not leave out the liberal “press” who have been disgusting and pro Obama.

… how it will be possible to bring the people of this country back together again short of a major war or depression.

If McCain wins the left will spend the next four years seeing how much more deranged and depraved they can be than they have been for the last eight years.

If Obama wins the right is going to accord him all the respect and support that the Dems have us for the last eight years. Until they make disagreement a crime anyway.

been wondering the same thing myself. I don’t see how anything other than another civil war bringing the left-right together.

The only other option is a division of the country (peacefully) into two countries – socialists/communists and capitalists.

Almost wish I could be around to see what happens…

Not only would that lead to Civil War, where do you draw the line between Barackistan and the Real USA when the divisions are within families and neighborhoods. I think it’s gonna get ugly, no matter who “wins”.

(“win” – as defined in the new Barackistan dictionary: v.t. as applied to elections: if liberal/left candidates prevail, a “win” is the outcome of a fair transparent & democratic process; if a conservative/right candidate prevails, “win” is synonymous with “cheated”, “stole the election” etc.)

As it currently stands, it would be mainly another North South issue with those in the West aligning with the South (along with Alaska). I know it sounds unlikely, but at the rate of stupidity of government and their supporters, I am beginning to have less doubts.

I am getting a bit weary of the ‘well, both sides have issues with ‘X” argument. Like who?

Dan, you post thoughtful and insightful diaries and I generally agree with your points. If you are going to use a line like that, let’s have some actual examples of rightwing violence, physical attacks, hate filled invective attacking the family of a candidate, vile and offensive exhibitions, literary assinations, deranged polemics, and voter fraud. I’m not going to bother with illustrating the Leftwing examples of the above because they are so numerous and vicious, they’ve become rather commonplace. An occasional anonymous heated shout out at a political rally is conspicuous because it is almost unheard of!

So let’s keep that throway line of “They all do it” out of these discussions because, frankly, we don’t all do it.
