Today’s Word Is “Erratic”

This Message Brought To You By The Letter "O"

It’s not a secret or a surprise that people on both sides of the political aisle try to drive stories and common themes, but one of the things that’s especially amusing about the Left is the willingness of Democratic talking heads and lefty bloggers to mindlessly parrot verbatim the talking points handed down by their campaign, in the hopes of driving particular words into the news coverage. And it appears that the word of the moment being slapped on McCain is “erratic” – in contrast to the serene (sorry, “steady”) inactivity of Barack Obama.

Today the Obama campaign accidentally sent reporters the talking points it intends to press for tonight’s debate:

“* This is John McCain’s last chance to turn this race around and somehow convince the American people that his erratic response to this economic crisis doesn’t disqualify him from being President.

“* Just this weekend the weekend, John McCain vowed to ‘whip Obama’s you-know-what’ at the debate, and he’s indicated that he’ll be bringing up Bill Ayers to try to distract voters.

“* So we know that Senator McCain will come ready to attack Barack Obama and bring his dishonorable campaign tactics to the debate stage.

“Obama continues to lead on the economic crisis with a rescue plan for Main Street.

“Over the course of the campaign, Barack Obama has laid out a set of policies that will grow our middle class and strengthen our economy.

“But he knows we face an immediate economic emergency that requires urgent action – on top of the plans he’s already laid out – to help workers and families and communities struggling right now.

“That’s why Barack Obama is introducing a comprehensive four-part Rescue Plan for the Middle Class – to immediately to stabilize our financial system, provide relief to families and communities, and help struggling homeowners.

“This is a plan that can and should be implemented immediately.

“Obama has shown steady leadership during this crisis and offered concrete solutions to move the country forward – and his Rescue Plan for the Middle Class builds on the plans to strengthen the economy and rebuild the middle class that he’s laid out over the course of this campaign.

“Already in this campaign, he’s unveiled plans to give 95 percent of workers and their families a tax cut, eliminate income taxes for seniors making under $50,000, bring down the cost of health care for families and businesses; and create millions of new jobs by investing in the renewable energy sources.

“John McCain has been erratic and unsteady since this crisis began – staggering from position to position and trying to change the subject away from the economy by launching false character attacks.”

H/T Moe

Now, let’s look at some samples from the lefty blogs collected by yesterday’s Blogometer under the headline “MCCAIN: Reinforcing The “Erratic” Meme?”

Other liberal bloggers are portraying the McCain camp as “erratic”:

The Washington Monthly’s Steve Benen: “It’s almost as if they’re trying to look erratic, unable to deal with the pressure of a crisis.”

MyDD’s Todd Beeton: “So, call me crazy but if the number one criticism about you is that you act erratically and it’s sticking because, well, you’re undeniably acting erratically, wouldn’t it be wise to stop? To start acting with purpose, with some modicum of discipline? Wouldn’t that just be Politics 101?”

AMERICAblog’s Joe Sudbay: “Let’s just put this in perspective: The McCain campaign knows its being closely watched. Their repeated stunts, combined with the ugly negative attacks, have caused the McCain to drop precipitously in national and state polls. Yet, against this scrutiny, McCain and his campaign honchos only reinforce the idea that erratic behavior reigns. It’s quite stunning. No wonder so many Republicans are fleeing from the McCain campaign.”

Then we get John Podesta on what McCain needs to do tonight:

McCain needs to change the dynamic of this race, but his erratic responses to the economic crisis aren’t the way to do it.

John McCain has flip flopped on many of his stances during the campaign. He wanted to stay in Iraq for 50 years, then only several. He wanted a “freeze” on federal spending, then put forward a 300 billion dollar spending plan for the economy. His campaign accuses Senator Obama of being friends with terrorists, then calls him a “decent” man, and then repeats the original charge.
Is this how Senator McCain will act as president? The occasional flip flop is a healthy thing-it is sometimes necessary for compromise. But frequent erratic behavior from the president can shake national and worldwide confidence in America’s leadership.

is the willingness of Democratic talking heads and lefty bloggers to mindlessly parrot verbatim the talking points handed down by their campaign.”

Wouldn’t it be fun to generate some more realistic talking points for the Dem’s and blast them out to all the lefties as the latest iteration of the Party line? It would be interesting to see how many of them would parrot the “new” talking points even though they are 180 degrees from the standard? Imagine, “Barack Obama announces his staunch support for the 2nd amendment as well guaranteeing that he will begin immediately working to overturn Roe v Wade as soon as he is inaugurated.”

    Marxist

    Because that’s what Obama is.

So here’s what I’d like to hear tonight:

McCain: So Senator, why don’t you tell the American people about your *Marxist *friends; Davis, Ayers, Dorhn, Wright, Farrakhan, Odinga, et al.

McCain: So Senator, why don’t you tell the American people about some of your Marxist proposals and legislation such as: the Global Poverty Act, plans for a national civilian defense force, your work at the CAC corrupting young, fragile minds with your friend Ayers’ Marxist filth.

McCain: So you can see, my friends, as we come to an end of this campaign, you have a clear choice. A choice between someone who loves this country and puts country first or someone who has spent his whole life hanging around people who hate this country and who wish to impose failed Marxist ideas on everyday, hardworking Americans. So what’s it going to be? America or Marxism? I chose America!

Is “erratic” code word for old?

It’s so great to see you folks squirm finally. Just so you know, the world-view and American-view of you Republicans is this:

    You’re selfish.

You “Red States” have us “Blue States” pay for your roads & infrastructure, yet you contribute way less than you receive; all the while screaming “lower taxes!!”
(P.S. Obama’s not going to raise taxes on us middle-class folks. Why are you shilling for the rich?)

Almost all religious nuts & zealots are Republican.

You don’t believe in science (dinosaurs?), or if you do, you fully support candidates that don’t.

Although there are certainly some “smart” republicans, most people usually assume that if you’re dumb, then you’re bound to be Republican (if you vote at all). Thanks for the reinforcement of this!

You want it all, but don’t want to contribute anything. (you’re selfish)

You believe that women should be obligated to carry the baby of rapists and family members (incest).

You believe that the constitution grants you the right to own & use assault rifles. (Hey- us Democrats hunt too– but not with a freaking machine gun… who’s the real man?)

10% of you think Obama is a Muslim (haha!! STILL!!)

You fully supported the worst president we’ve ever had.

I could go on & on, (& maybe I should have mispelled a bunch of werds so yew wud think im one of you on yer level) but my comment will probably be deleted anyhow.

I may intrinsically not like you, but Obama does; he’s more open-minded than me (which is ironic because your party by far wins the “closed-minded” war), and he will fight for you & support you in a way that your party won’t. Bash us all you want, but in 7 years, please ask yourself if you’re better off then than now. We all know you will be, and it’s our pleasure to give it to you.

Have you ever been abroad? Most of you have of course not ever been. To those of you that have, you know that the rest of the world thinks you’re ignoramuses. It’s such a BLESSING that you’re finally being unilaterally viewed for what you are. This Great Country and the rest of the world (which I know you’re not particularly interested in, but with global economics I’m afraid you don’t really have a choice anymore to be so insular) have called you out. Your reign is over, and hopefully (for the good of mankind) will be over (or at least revised) for good. Your party’s views were once pious, a long time ago.

You guys think we’re snobby & elitist. We think you’re dumb & corrupt. This will not likely change, but you’re in for a treat. I hope some of you will appreciate it, but most won’t. You’ve got all the bad stereotypes, and you deserve them. America thinks so, and so does the whole world.

    I can’t wait for Nov. 5th!

    • ohiobeagle

If you’re dumb you’re a Republican? Why is it then that the Democrats have the less than high school demographic consistently in their column? Why do you hate Republicans when all we want to do is retain more of our hard earned income? Do you really despise the most productive members of our society? By the way, Republicans give a whole lot more money to charity than Democrats. I myself give more annually than Joe Biden does in a decade. I guess that’s because I hate the poor and am selfish. Please back up your assertion that we red-staters take money from the blue states. If you’re counting public assistance, there’s no way we come close to spending the same amount of federal tax dollars-including ours–supporting deadbeats, illiterates, gang-bangers, and illegals. I’m going to venture that I’m at least as well educated than you, but I’m a productive member of society working in a private enterprise and not academia or community organizing, or whatever public, tax-supporting venue. And by the way, I really don’t care what Europe or any other country thinks of the United States.

      • dbecraft

Not unusual when the poor and poorly educated meed the rich and highly educated! Wow, you do sound sincere though – although I am having a hard time understanding your accent!

        • David_Hinz

You fully supported the worst president we’ve ever had

I NEVER voted for President Jimmy Carter.

          • Han_Pritcher

I mean, Buchanan just sort of sat there whilst the Union fell apart. Literally fell apart.

          • JimJim

Haha! That was a good one: touche’

          • JimJim

Of course I sound foreign to you. Born & bred, Mom & Dad too. Keep reaching…it’s obviously getting you nowhere, and you should feel ashamed and embarrassed.

P.S. How did you like the third Obama debate win now that they’re all done?

          • aesthete

Seeing as how the vast majority of our military personnel are Republicans (number’s even greater with active duty), I don’t see how a cobbled-together coalition can have more collective “world experience” that the members of the Armed Forces, most of whom have lived abroad in the same country for years.

Of course, this doesn’t compare to the immeasurably vast experience of going on “a European road trip that my parents are paying for, doodz!!!”

            /snark

BTW, in the area of academia that really matters when it pertains to politics, economics, we have you hopelessly beat as well, with most economists preferring the Republican/Libertine views on the economy as opposed to your party’s. (Though, in recent times, our party hasn’t been so great on that count, either.)

But I guess since you guys have Matt Damon, great intellectual that he is, it all evens out.

          • aesthete

should be “cobbled together coalition of college students, labor and various minorities”
